SBNation 2008 NFL Mock Draft rolling through 2nd Round

...UPDATE...

Like Ghosthippo pointed out in the comments section, we gambled on taking a WR with that first round pick and have really got a not-so-spectacular group of Corners to choose from. With that said... How about going DT with Red Bryant? The Bucs have been rumored to like Red and he's certainly a better value at this point then any CB we could potentially pursue. Those pesky Falcons foiled our plans by taking CB Tracy Porter. Here's New Era Scouting's take on Red:

Torn ACL ended his 2006 campaign. Great presence. Ideal physique. Wide-body with good bubble. Matured as a senior. Has been coddled some. Long arms, uses his hands well. A twogap player who can stop the run or get after the quarterback. Finally showing his true self. Is slightly out of shape. Four-year starter.

2007 stats: 41 Tackles (11 Solo), 1 sack, 6 tackles for loss, caused a safety, blocked a field goal, 7 qb pressures, one forced fumble, one deflection, 12 third down stops, 2 fourth down stops, 12 hits inside red-zone

The kid literally has fight in him, at the Senior Bowl Practice he got in a fight with SBNation's 15th Draft Choice in OT Chris Williams. He threw several haymakers before being pulled away. I like that fight in my defensive hog mollies and I'm sure Kiffin and Company do as well.... So what do you think? If I thought we were going to trade for DE Jared Allen I wouldnt suggest this, as moving Greg White inside to field Allen, White, Haye, and Adams would be sick.. The Vikings appear to have a contract wrapped up with Allen... so this is the route i think we ought to go...

As you can see below, we are nearly On the Clock again in SBNation’s NFL Mock Draft. A couple notable guys who have yet to go off the Draft Board are: CB Tracy Porter, CB Reggie Smith (Chosen by Vikings), CB DeJuan Tribble (are you sensing a pattern?), and DT Red Bryant ... This is definitely where the Draft gets a little tougher. Just a heads up, I don’t think we’re gonna get in a 3rd round, so keep that in mind with your suggestions.

It's Mock Draft time.. SBNation's 2nd Annual NFL Mock Draft is under way. Head over to Mocking the Draft to see who SBNation's Bloggers have chosen for their respective teams.. With that said I need EVERYONE'S input on who the Bucs should draft with the 52nd Pick. I would run a poll, but thats too time consuming and who knows who'll be available when it's our turn to pick. Whoever the community suggests is who I'll attempt to Draft.

Here's how SBNation's 2nd Round of its 2008 NFL Mock Draft has shaped up thus far:

62 New England Patriots
63 New York Giants

If I had to pick a Cornerback with this pick, I’d lean toward Reggie Smith or DeJuan Tribble. Tracy Porter is probably the more polished and ready Cornerback, but should Phillip Buchanon or Eugene Wilson stop a Rookie CB from making an appearance during the season, at least Smith and Tribble double up as return men… Should the Bucs take a WR in the 1st round, you would think a CB would be a no brainer with their 2nd round pick… By the way, thank goodness Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is NOT doing the drafting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If he had the reins, the Bucs would Draft LB Curtis Lofton IN THE FIRST ROUND… HA! Talk about clueless sheesh…

Tracy Porter
Tracy Porter should definitely be taken with the 52nd overall pick if he is still around, I don't think I need to explain Tampa's need for a CB. Porter was voted 1st team All Big Ten by the media this year and garnered 2nd team honors from the coaches. Porter is currently second among active NCAA players with 16 career interceptions (6 this season, with a 22.8 yard return average). As a four year starter at Indiana, Porter proved to be a dynamic player on the defensive side of the ball. Along with his lofty interception total, he has proven to have a knack for getting around the football. Porter has 24 career pass break ups, along with 5.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries.Porter's tackling from the corner position is also among the best in the country. The 5'11", 185 lbs. Porter has recorded 83 tackles this season (63 of them solo).

In contrast to your comments JScott, to go along with his abilities on defense, Porter is also a specialist return man. As a junior he averaged 18.6 yards per punt return -- scoring on an 86 yarder -- while only sharing the duties. During the regular season, Porter returned all 23 punts for the Hoosiers, averaging 11 yards per return. Porter ran a 4.29 at his Pro Day, only furthering his case as a top class corner and return man.

I stand
Corrected! If everyone is cool with Porter being the pick, then so be it. If he's available, I'll include your analysis in the write up for the site and quote you...

Should be interesting

Bah
Well this doesn't bode well for us in the second round, if we had to do this over, we should have gone with the CB in the first round and a WR in the second, but thats alright, with Porter and Smith off the board, Tribble would be the next logical step I suppose.

Actually....
If we still went for the corner this round, the only one that holds any water in the second round that is still on the board is Patrick Lee out of Auburn, otherwise I don't believe that any other CB left is worthy of second round consideration.

Well....
Most analysts have Red falling to a second day pick, and he just doesn't have the value in the second round... we could draft at RB, but I know you guys believe Caddy will be back in full force next year, and Im pretty sure you guys would shoot down a QB in the second round =P I really don't know, as I said, Lee is the only corner with value in this round left on the board.

i had
to have the pick in by 3pm today so i made a Buc 'Em official call (the analysis to follow should tip off who i drafted for us)...

I see this seasons Cornerback positions as locked down. Ronde on one side obviously, then I dont see any way conceivable that DeJuan Tribble or Patrick Lee could come in and wrestle the position away from Phillip Buchanon and Eugene Wilson. Couple that with Sammy Davis' solid play last season and there's no way a 2nd Round CB will step in..

I think a fourth round selection of CB Jack Williams would cover our current problems at cornerback, as least cover it in a band aid fashion. Plus there's Marcus Hamilton from last seasons draft.

I made my selection based on value and I found the position I drafted for provided solid value. You're right about the RB position, there's no way i would go that route and thats not even including Caddy in the picture. Between Earnest, Bennett, Dunn, and Darby (they need to see what he has outside of the scout team) I feel like were covered at the position.

You know how I feel about the QB position.. I could never take one in the 2nd round.. I hope the Bucs look at Jordy Nelson in the 3rd round. I'm okay with the Bucs taking a QB so long as the guy fits their system aka NOT Chad Henne/Andre Woodson
