NFL Mock Draft: 2008 Tampa Bay Buccaneer Coverage

To be honest, I'm warn out on the "should the Bucs TRADE for this guy or SIGN this guy chatter" .. Let's move on to a little NFL Draft Coverage...

Below you'll find a fairly extensive data base tracking those who had the guts to predict the unpredictable. As our poll in the right hand side of this site has suggested, it seems more and more fans are looking for the Bucs to Draft a Wide Receiver with the first pick in this year's NFL Draft.. Let's see if the masses agree:

Draft Daddy 3-14 WR James Hardy - No Pick - No Pick

The early consensus appears to be California's WR/PR DeSean Jackson. We'll get to know him more in the coming weeks. North Carolina's DT Kentwan Balmer was a shock for me, he would be a nice pick up with an older Chris Hovan and Kevin Carter on the roster. The Dan Conner predictions and 2nd Round QB predictions slightly freak me out, I'd say those guys don't have a very good handle on the Bucs current needs.

I'll attempt to update this monster once a week up until Draft Day... Keep an eye out for the SBNation Mock Draft as that will get started toward the end of this month..

A big THANKS goes to Sean from Pride of Detroit as I ganked this data base from his site.. Thanks Sean

DRAFT DAY PICKINS`
THIS WAS THE SLOWEST FREE AGENT SIGNINGS I`VE EVER SEEN. VERY QUIET SIGNINGS. ALMOST LIKE THEY WERE EMBARRESED TO PICK THOSE GUYS FROM OTHER TEAMS. I DONT KNOW IF ANY OF THOSE GUIYS WILL START...MAYBE BRYANT. ANYWAY WE NEED WIDE RECIEVERS BADLY BUT THE HOMETOWN FAVORITE MIKE JENKINS FROM USF WOULD BE A GOOD PICK. BUT WE NEED SO MUCH IN THE WAY OF SPEEDY PLAYERS IT WONT HAPPEN...WILL IT? WITH THE BUCS NOTHING SUPRISES ME ANYMORE. ME...I THINK DRAFT DAY PICKINS` MAY BE SLIM.

Mike Jenkins
Would be the perfect situation, but there's no way he's gonna drop to the Bucs. I think somebody will pick up DeSean Jackson as well. We also know the Bucs won't trade up to draft either guy, especially after they elected not to jump two slots last year to get Calvin Johnson...

I'm just praying they don't waste a pick on a QB... I'll be pissed.. Like they care

DeSean
I think DeSean might fall to the Bucs, or Limas Sweed perhaps.  As for those draft reports that have them taking a QB in the second round, I believe that both Colt Brennan and Erik Ainge will drop into the third round, and either would be a great 3rd round choice, even with our overcrowded stable of QBs... or if Brohm is still on the board in the second round (unlikely), but we need help at CB so that is pretty unrealistic.

i don't see the need and desire
to Draft a QB period in this Draft. The fact that not a single QB could get drafted in the first round is very telling (We all know Ryan will go in round 1, but this crop is weak).. Plus, when is Gruden going to have the time to groom another QB with Garcia and Griese (yuck) in the fold for the next two years?

If Simms can prove he's healthy, why wouldnt they pick up where they left off with him. Sure his numbers were horrendous to start that '06 season, but I think anybody and everybody would attribute alot of that struggle in most part to the Offensive Line and its inexperience...

As per DeSean Jackson, I hope youre right on that front, he would upgrade one area for sure (Punt Returning) and potentially upgrade another (Wide Receiving Corps).. I still think somebody will grab him ahead of us just because of his speed

QBs
While I agree for the most part on the lack of need for a QB, I can't really see Simms sticking around, reports have his mechanics a total mess and his numbers weren't that good in the first place, keeping him seems like its just delaying the inevitable. I believe Garcia would make an ideal mentor to a young QB, even if most of his time is spent on the bench for the next two years, and I believe there are some value picks on excellent QBs that will drop as far as the third and fourth round. As for Jackson, there really isn't another team that picks before us in the first round that has WR as their #1 need, and I believe we will get pick of the litter... as for CBs, I believe Talib will be long gone by the 20th pick.

i don't see
any excellent QB's in this years NFL Draft, but that's just me.. Henne couldnt do anything with Mike Hart, Mario Manningham and at one time Jason Avant, Woodson isnt elusive enough to last in Gruden's offense (neither is Simms for that matter), and the rest seem like clipboard holders (Brohm, Brennan, Ainge).

I figure we'll have a fairly competitive season next year. With a few breaks maybe we stumble past the wild card.. After that I see a huge regression, with Garcia showing age, Galloway on the outs, Hilliard on the outs, Derrick Brooks gone, potentially Ronde Barber with a foot out the door. I'd rather the Bucs see what they currently have in McCown/Simms and then Draft a Franchise Quarterback like a Tim Tebow esque player.

As for the elite Wide Receivers being around at Pick #20, there has to be some, but I wouldnt be surprised to see Buffalo, Philly, Minnesota, Chicago, and Denver look to upgrade their current Wide Receiving Corps...

All in all, I just hope the Bucs don't get cute with the pick by Drafting an OT, C, or LB... I would probably turn off the Draft right then and there..

Brohm will be solid
I see Brian Brohm being a solid QB in the NFL in a team with a good O-line and that lets him throw out of the shotgun, he did great things up in Louisville in a program that hasn't had anything... ever, but he will go too early for him to be a realistic pick for the Bucs.  He may not have Vick-like mobility, but with adequate protection, he could be a star.

If we draft anything but a WR or CB in the first round, someone needs to keelhaul Allen, and I will probably end up throwing the remote through the screen.

haha
I wanted to throw the remote through the screen last season when the Bucs didnt even hint at moving up to get Calvin Johnson, then their other picks were spent on never-will-be's: DT Greg Peterson, LB Adam Hayward, OT Chris Denman, CB Marcus Hamilton, and (I can't buy playing time) RB Kenneth Darby... should be interesting...

Ditto that
I seriously did too, after all of the mad pre-draft speculation, and even the posturing, not a single effort to grab him.... those picks made baby jebus cry, as well as Bucs fans everywhere I should hope.

"Baby Jebus"
haha i love it...

It seems Allen gets off on Drafting Players his fan base and peers alike have NEVER heard of...

by JScott on Mar 23, 2008 11:37 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol
Seriously, I don't think the guy can tell the diamond from the coal half the time and it pisses me off, I really was hoping they wouldn't extend him, but eh, they made the playoffs so it was expected I suppose.

He is probably rubbing his hands together gleefully right, 'now how do I make fans cry this year... perhaps draft OT Thaddeus Coleman in the first round, he had such soft hands...'

A sure-fire way to make Baby Jebus cry and fans throw remotes.

yea i was SHOCKED
they extended Allen, but i think he and Gruden go hand in hand, so he was like, extend me first and then... you can extend Gruden...
