Draft.... Offense?
I've been of the opinion that we ought to go heavy on defense in the draft. Morris might be thinking a little differently though.
The coach identified his top offseason priorities on Monday as the continued development of rookie Josh Freeman and using the draft to surround the 21-year-old quarterback with promising young talent. The Bucs will have five of the first 99 selections, including No. 3 overall.
"You've got to say No. 5's the biggest priority, making sure everything works around him, because when it worked around him, we were able to be successful," Morris said, referring to Freeman's jersey number.
Interesting. It seems his priority in the draft is to get Freeman some help. What do you think? We could definitely use some talent on o-line and receiving. I'm not sure it is a more glaring need than DT, but I can see his side of this. We might have something special in Freeman. If he's running for his life and throwing to receivers with bricks instead of hands, we might not ever find out.

One other tidbit from the article
The head coach was noncommittal about whether former quarterbacks coach Greg Olson will continue as offensive coordinator. He’s also pondering whether he will continue to lead a defense that played better under his guidance.

If we draft offense first, I will be pretty pissed.
We need help on both sides, no doubt about that, but defense (particularly the DL) has been an issue for years now. If we can’t pressure the QB or stop the run, I dont care who we have in the secondary.

I was thinking we should do 1 of 2 routes
Berry in 1st, Receiver and Dt in 2nd.
or
MCCoy in 1st, receiver and oline in 2nd.
But what the hell do I know. :)

I'm heavy on the DT in 1st, DB in 2nd, WR in 2nd, DB in 3rd camp at this point.

No, their performance wasn't good by any means this year
But (hopefully) Sears is back next year and with focusing on one blocking scheme and no changes, they should improve. Our DL has no hope right now and we have no #2 WR and maybe no #1 WR (if AB leaves). And we all know that CB/S is a need with Sabby back there and Ronde, who cant play forever.
OL is a need, but I’m hopeful that Penn will continue to grow, Sears comes back, Faine plays like we pay him, Joseph gets more consistent and Trueblood doesnt kill anyone.

Trueblood kill someone - lol
Agreed on dline and receiving (especially if ab leaves, but even if he doesn’t). Almost everyone seems to think we should spend a 2nd on a receiver.

Well, lets assume that AB leaves. Here is our WR corp
Clayton, Stovall, Stroughter, Clark, Bradley (RFA). Not exactly anything to work with. Now, if AB stays, that helps, but we still have no real #2. Stroughter seems better in the slot as a #3 guy, we need a #2 to open up things for AB and K2

Oh I don't disagree
Note I had receiver with a 2nd rounder in both my scenarios. Even with AB we need a receiver. Failing that, we need a big bottle of glue for Clayton’s hands.

Coaching was the biggest problem with the O-line this year, same with the D-line.
When these guys come in with schemes that don’t fit what we have, then they get changed and changed and changed, I can’t fault the players for that.
by bucnut1 on Jan 5, 2010 1:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Lets give the O line a pass this year...
They were told to lose weight, learn the zone blocking system, then scrap all that, go back to the old system, and gain some weight.
Can you blame them?
Sears will help out big time. I expect the old line back next year, only better

I am in agreement with aaks
I think that we need to get Suh (In my dreams), McCoy or Berry in the first. If we do indeed have to get Berry b/c McCoy and Suh are gone, then I think we’ll need a DT with our first 2nd rounder, then a WR. I am not too worried about our O-Line just yet as 2 of our starters weren’t there for a good portion of the year if not all. Plus them changing Offensive phylosophies messed them up pretty good.

I don't think he'd go for a 2nd
I think he’s a first or maybe a 2nd/3rd.
In any case, lets say he’s a 2nd. I don’t know, honestly, if I’d make that trade. He comes with soooo much baggage. I’m not sure it is worth it, although you can’t deny his talent.

Do we really want someone who would disrupt the locker room worse than Keyshawn use too?

He has an attitude but...
He is also an Orlando guy and he might be happy to play close to home. Our passing game would be amazing with Bryant, Winslow and Marshall.
I doubt any other teams would trade their first round pick for him. In my opinion, they would not get a better offer than our second round pick.
by Bucs on Jan 5, 2010 12:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It could happen...
But I doubt the Bucs will trade for him. As for as baggage we have seen Talib mature some this year(hopefully a lil more next year) and Morris was able to keep Winslow from making any off field headlines this year.

Who cares about their "Baggage" They all have baggage, and as long as it doesn't carry onto the field, I could care less if they don't like each other in the locker room.
Saying that, trading Gaines Adams for Brandon Marshall is one hell of a deal. You get a proven commodity and less risk than drafting a guy you don’t even know will make the team or not. You make the deal if it’s there.
Also, I think Marshall’s issues came when McDaniels showed up, same with Cutler’s, so maybe the coach there has something to do with it. I don’t know, but the guy can ball, that’s what’s important to me.

I really think you are giving the guy a bad rap
simply because he had a couple of DUI’s. Although I have been lucky enough to avoid one myself (knock on wood). I have lots of friends that have gotten them from simply making one stupid decision or being too broke to take a cab home. I don’t think the fact that they got into a little trouble with Johnny Law is indicative of what type of people they are.
He has never been convicted of anything and 95% of his complaining is justified because he has been a top 5 receiver in league for the past three years and is making a pittance of what he should.
I’m a little surprised that someone such as yourself, who frowns upon people judging other people, has it out so vehemently for Brandon Marshall.

the guy has done like 6 things in 3 years. He is nothing but trouble. I wouldnt take the chance. I dont like that side of AB to be honest with you, but he hasnt been arrested. Who cares if hes not convicted. He still gets arrested left and right. People with money can get out of convictions.
I dont put the play over the person, sorry. The guy is a stud receiver. He would dominate. And maybe this is the best place for him, because Raheem would be a guy in his corner for support that he needs, but we should look at all the red flags, because there are a lot of them.

Hey George W. Bush
had a DUI, and the American people (or at least the electoral college, haha) elected him president of the United States. I hardly think that getting a couple DUI’s in college makes him bad for this team. It’s silly that you don’t put the play over the person. I’m not asking them to lead my church service on Sunday, I’m asking them to win a football game. I could care less if Brandon Marshall has twenty DUI’s and had his license revoked for eternity. As long as his production is there on the field I could care less what he does off it.

I understand you have to take a chance at times on “problem” guys (see Bengals and Benson), but Stevens is a sorry excuse for a human being.
To look at how those guys affect a team, certainly things changed, but look at the Cowboys from 2008 to 2009. TO, Pacman and Tank, there in 08, gone in 09.

He was good in Denver, got into with McDaniels, patched it up, then this starts again. TO did the same thing. Its good, for awhile, then they get going with their antics. No doubt he’s talented but we had a hard time with AB who didn’t even do anything compared to Marshall.

I am not one of the TO haters. Clearly he had issues. But the teams he left didnt do anything better when he left. So I am not endorsing TO, I just think a player who backs up his talking on the field is worth the risk if we get a good deal. Keyshawn Johnson for example.

Freeman's growth
Is a priority as much as the DL is and getting Marshall would be great even with the baggage but if the price is more than a 2ND and maybe 5TH we should just look to the Draft for a receiver..Golden Tate should not be considered because we need talk receivers to help Freeman progress fast..AB and Stovall are FA’s so we’re pretty thin at WR..Both our Tackles are FA’s so drafting one in the 3RD or 4TH is on cards if we dont address it in FA but Zuttah could slide there and rotate with Dotson..

I actually listened to some of his radio show last night and he (Morris) said he had no idea about any college players coming out in the draft because he didn't follow it. What a noob!!!
I know he’s busy, but still.
OK, if you really want to help out Freeman, make the defense the priority in the draft. When the team is down 17 points in the first quarter every week, that is too much to put on your offense. When you’re giving up on average 157 yards on the ground every single game, there’s a big problem there too. We need d-lineman more than anything.

Im glad he doesnt watch college football, he pays scouts and has a general manager to know who the players who will be drafted. They all keep an eye on the college game, they make their wish lists. There’s guys out there playing that are so over looked and yet they are picked up and end up being very good. You don’t get that info from ESPN, so they have to keep an eye on college players and talk to the scouts. If he can’t multitask, then he’s in more over his head than I thought.

This could work both ways.
I read comments a couple days ago somewhere that Morris/Dominick were hoping to capitalize on FA this year. I know that currently it’s a no capp year and that all the good FA’s will be restricted and as a result, many feel they will not be obtainedable. But maybe either the negotiations will complete in time for the capp or the Morris/Dom team think they have ways to still take advantage of some quality players in it before the draft. If so, the draft could be even more interesting and next season could turn around very quickly.

Just took a look at some WR draft Prospects
And I am pretty impresed with the level of talent that is available. Here is a quick breakdown courtesy of Mel Kiper Jr. and ESPN
Seniors:
Mardy Gilyard6-
Brandon LaFell6-
Jordan Shipley6-
Danario Alexander6-
Dexter McCluster5-
Juniors:
Dez Bryant6-
Arrelious Benn6-
Golden Tate5-
Demaryius Thomas6-
Damian Williams6-
Maybe i hadnt been pay to much attention to the crop of Wideouts that were available, but these guys look pretty darn good. Im especially big on Demaryius Thomas, with the proper development he could be a slight kin to Calvin Johnson (who also played at G.Tech) this guy is 6’3 230 lbs averged 25.1 yards per catch while amassing over 1100 receiving yards playing in the ACC not a buttercup conference like some of the draftees. Other than that we should have plenty of talent to choose from with out 5 out of the first 99 picks in regards to wideouts anyway.

Any WR would fail if they draft them expecting them to be the answer to the teams problems. If you take a good team, who is solid already at most area, you can take a chance on a WR, like Percy Harvin. But we are not in that position, so I agree we dont need to be a Lions, or Raiders and draft a WR in the 1st round.

Careful not to draft a "product of the system" WR
This appears to be a good draft year for WR. Texas seems to have the type of system that makes WRs look better than they are. Beware of Shipley. I can’t think of one that has really excelled. On the other hand, you have to listen to people criticize Tebow and their non-pro style system, but look at the WRs that came out last year. Florida WRs Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy both contributed to their teams immensely.
Wish we had just one of them.

I do not agree with you on Shipley. The guy might have played in a passing offense, but if you actually watched him play, you would know he has great hands and can make an immediate impact being a kick/punt returner. Just like a Percy Harvin or Wes Welker did early on. Also these guys wernt drafted as save the franchise guys, just puzzle fillers.
I dont even understand how you could say Shipley is a product of the system. Did you watch him play?
