Safety Jermaine Phillips done for the year
The Bucs have just released information on Jermaine Phillips.
In a not-so-stunning move, the Bucs put safety Jermaine Phillips on the injured reserve, ending his season.
They also cut safety Steve Cargile. What this means is as of right now, the Bucs have two healthy safeties, Will Allen and Sabby Piscitelli with Phillips on IR, Cargile gone, and Tanard Jackson suspended.
I would imagine that means we would be picking up or trading for some safety depth soon.

We need help in the secondary. Maybe someone who can play corner and safety to give us some depth once Tanard is back. Anyone know of any free agents? I dont really like seeing Torrie Cox and Will Allen out on the field unless its special teams.

What is the FA market still like?
Are there any veteran Safetys or Corners still on the market after the preseason cuts that can fit with our defense on short notice?

Some names I found after peruzing
Will Demps * Probably the best choice. He was a pro-bowl alternate two season ago.
Corey Chavious – 33 Years Old. Best days are behind him, but he still started 14 games last season
Dwight Smith – 31 Years old .If this name sounds familiar, good for you. He played for the Bucs Super Bowl Team, a game in which he had two picks.
I haven’t been able to find a comprehensive, up-to-date, UFA list. If you can find that, please pass it along.

While this move isnt well timed for the Bucs
it is well timed for Buc Em. I bumped my QB column back another day due to another column being available. Sandy Kazmir has an interesting take on the safety position, and while it may not come into play in 2009, its a thought down the road. I’ll post his column tomorrow afternoon.

Looks like the Bucs signed
Cory Lynch and Marcus Hamilton. Hamilton is a CB, Lynch is a practice squad safety. Lord help us

Lynch is from the Bengals?
I saw him on the Hard Knocks show on HBO. He gotten beaten out of a roster spot by an undrafted rookie free agent who is about twenty pounds too light to play safety. Lord help us.

Funny enough
He’s also John Lynch’s cousin according to Wikipedia.
