Bucs come out flat, fall to Bills 33-20

A tough, tough game to take.  This was just about as bad as things could go.  Not only did the Bucs not win, but the way they played in every phase was just uninspiring.

This game most likely represent the Bucs best chance to win over the next few games (though the Redskins certainly aren't blowing anyone away).  With a trip up to see Buffalo, a win was needed to get things moving the right direction.  Instead, we got another loss, some bad habits, and very few highlights handed to us.

Star-divide

The Bucs would start this game in just about the worst way possible.  The Bucs went three and out and were immediately hit back by a 32 yard TD pass from Edwards to Evans.  7-0 Bills.  The Bucs got the ball back and were manufacturing a decent drive, when on a first and 10 play Leftwich dropped back, had a Bills defender at his ankles, and rather than take the sack tried to dump it off to Cadillac.  He overshot Cadillac, right into Donte Whitner's arms, and he proceeded to return it 76 yards for the TD.  14-0 Bills.

On the next possession, another decent drive was being put together when a Leftwich pass bounced off of Stroughter and into the arms of Bills defender, though it looked as if it hit the ground.  The play was challenged and upheld and led to a Bills field goal.  17-0 Bills.

The Bucs answered right back, finally putting some points on the scoreboard.  A quick Leftwich to Winslow strike for 42 yards got the Bucs going in the right direction.  17-7.  The Bucs D would use the bend dont break philospohy and gave up a field goal to push it to 20-10.

After a few punts were traded and just before halftime, Edwards and the Bills were moving the ball and inside the Bucs 20 when Fred Jackson would go off tackle, where he was met by Ronde Barber.  Jackson fumbled it straight into the arms of Sabby Piscitelli who would return it all the way to the Bills 8 yard line. Cadillac would punch it in, and just like that it was 20-14 Bills.

Both offenses were sluggish in the second half with punts being alternated until Edwards overthrew a receiver, leading to a Piscitelli interception.  it wouldn't lead to any scoring and the third quarter ended with no offense or any real highlights.

The Bills started the 4th quarter with a Lindell field goal to push it to 23-14.  After a Bucs punt, the Bills struck again.  A 43 yard TD pass from Edwards to T.O. put the Bills up for good at 30-14.  The Bucs made an effort to come back and converted to 4th downs, the final conversion being a two yard strike from Leftwich to Stevens.  The two point conversion failed, leaving the score at 30-20.  The Bills would tack on a field goal, and while the Bucs drove deep into Bills territory, it was too much to overcome. No more points were put on the board and the game ended 33-20.

It was a game that lacked effort, big plays, consistency, and discipline.  The Bucs hung in there after the 17 point opening quarter, but could never make it all the way back.

The Bills take on the Saints next week in Buffalo, and the Bucs will welcome the Giants into Raymond James Stadium.

I don't think they are playing uninspiring.

They just aren’t very good.

Agreed

I’m going to the Washington game (since I’m in Chesapeake,Va and that is the place I can see the Bucs play) so I might have the chance to see our only win of the season in person.

if its our only win it might be the only time to enjoy it.

The game was far from uninspiring.

I saw a team that never quit and that though down by 17 got to within 6.

The Bucs Fired their Offensive "Guru" and gave an unproven assistant a chance. He went 0-6 before he won his first game. That was Tony Dungy.

Gruden's act had gotten old

No one listened to him. Kiffin left on his own free will. Thus our O and D playbooks are gone.

Yeah, I got that...and Raheem was already named DC...

…but did that necessarily mean that some of the personnel that we had could exectue the new schemes? Winslow is definitely an upgrade over Alex Smith, the acquisition of D-Ward was certainly a good move…but the Leftwich move continues to confound me. Why not stick with Garcia until Freeman is ready. Was he not more mobile and more careful with the ball? And then there’s the D…but I digress…I just needed to vent, thanks.

did you really want to see 4 more 9-7 seasons?

We gave up as many offensive TDs in that Giants playoff loss at home that every home playoff game in Bucs history. We were starting to rebuild in 2005. then after that 06 disaster, I think Gruden and Allen panicked and felt the need to win now. They should have drafted a QB, then they could have had an excuse to lose for a few years. Instead were rebuilding now.
Oh well.

I think we are playing

A lot better than i expected. When was the last time our Offense scored more than 20 points a game? I’m liking what Josh Freeman has to work with and watching these games it makes me feel better about sitting Freeman. I think if we can get an upgrade at each level of the Defense then I think we will be good. If we can grab 1 more Defensive play maker on the line (Richard Seymour?) A replacement for Big number 55 (Spikes?) and just waiting for a 4 game suspension to be over with (T. Jackson) We will be ok….Again give us a year, year and a half we will be a team to watch out for…..

From Bills fan....
Leftwich pass bounced off of Stroughter and into the arms of Bills defender, though it looked as if it hit the ground

I don’t know how that didn’t get reversed – looked obvious to me it hit the ground.

You guys do have a resilent team, that’s good. Up in Buffalo we’ve “rebuilt” many times and it’s always hard. You look for positives and signs and go from there.

You guys also play tough, hard nosed ball. That’s fun to watch – good luck going forward. I’ll be pulling for you to beat, well, everyone else in the AFCE.

I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying

Thanks J2

Were thankful for the comments.

You guys looked pretty good too. I think this season may come down to Bills/Jets.

Edwards is your best QB since Joe Ferguson ! Ok Doug Flutie.

I dont think we should even think of starting Josh Freeman until at least we get Faine Back, and thats the earliest.

Ferguson!

Remember that strange duckwalk he had, he always kind of waddled up to the line from the huddle

Watching the Miami game...

Bucs should try the wild-cat, they have the talent.
