Dexter Jackson Released
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had until September 1st to get down to the 75 player limit. It looks like they did it a day early by releasing Dexter Jackson.
A wide receiver out of Division II (or the FCS Division), he was a second round draft pick by the Gruden/Allen regime. He was drafted for his speed (4.27 40 yard dash) and hopes that he could help stretch the field and return kicks/punts.
After struggling a bit in the 2008 preseason, he returned a punt for a touchdown in the last preseason game, giving us all hope that he could perform at the NFL level. However, after the first few agmes, it was obvious he wasn't ready for the NFL level. He appeared tentative and indecisive, often stumbling to the ground or avoiding a hit.
There had been hopes that he could turn it around this year, but with the emergence of an identical player, Sammy Stroughter, Jackson become expendable. After one year, and less than 7 games as a Buc, Dexter Jackson has been sent packing.
According to a Buc 'Em poll, 71% of you thought that Jackson would make the team. It was not to be.

A bit suprised, but I guess this was only a matter of time.
I can’t remember who else was still on the board when the Bucs chose Jackson. It goes to show, I guess, the difference between Division II & Division I and why it was sort of a reach taking him in the second round.

Not the biggest surprise ever
The emergence of Stroughter and bad timing with injuries pretty much finished him off. In hindsight it was a terrible pick, but you win some and you lose some

Surprise isn't the word
It is hard to believe that 75 other players are better than Dexter Jackson but he just had a terrible rookie year and then some terrible luck. He has been injured all preseason and when he does get healthy, he gets a hurt ankle after a kick return. Kinda sucks for him but he is young and Hopefully some team will pick him up. This shows that the NFL is a business, they picked a guy to replace him and he ends up going to the pro-bowl and then they draft a guy in the 7th round, who can do the things that he was brought into do. Guess this will open up things for stroughter to be the 4th reciever and a backup on special teams to clifton smith, maybe the two will be the two back men on the kick return – how dangerous would we be then? I think we will get some squib kicks

Our glaring need at the time
was WR. We had no idea what Bryant could do. I didn’t hate the pick then, but it does point to Gruallens judge of talent.

What was Mark Dominic's former roll with the Bucs?

Per Arrowhead Pride
the Chiefs SB Nation… these were his job responsibilities
* Coordinating the recruiting and signing of all NFL free agents
* Monitors NFL transactions and handles player tryouts
* In charge of Tampa Bay’s scouting efforts of all other professional football leagues, including the NFL, NFL Europe, the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football Leagues
* Say “Yes Sir” every time Jon Gruden opens his mouth.
* Make sure Brian Allens coffee stays warm and his pillow fluffed while he lounges in his office waiting for direction from Jon Gruden.
Italicized responsibilities added by me.

The writing was on the wall
This was a stretch last year and we all knew it. Tough to gamble on a 2nd round pick, but ultimately we dont know if he had the talent. He was too scared of contact to show us if he could do anything.

You know when you are drafting D2 talent
that it’s all or nothing. He had a nice career at App St. There wasn’t a whole lot of reason to assume he couldn’t do it on the next level. I’m more pissed about drafting Kyle Moore than I am wasting time on Jackson.
Maybe they thought he was Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jacksons twin brother and they could get a year out of him before releasing him and watching his career plummet.

App State is division 1AA
This is a division one college and thats why they played Michigan. No division 2 is going to be able to play Michigan.
Whats wrong with Kyle Moore? He looks pretty good and will be making the rotation .
Are you talking about Kyle Moore from USC or Dre Moore from Maryland? I have reason to believe you are talking about dre moore. Either way you put it, those two will be in the DL rotation this year. They both have been making plays. Dre Moore is a DT that is 330 lbs. He will clog the middle up with Hovan, Simms, and Miller. Kyle Moore will get some time at left end behind Jimmy Wilkerson.

"He looks pretty good"
? What have you seen that says that? He’s in the rotation simply because of the well below average depth we have on that side of the DL. The one sack Moore (KYLE) had in the pre-season he even admitted to falling into the quarterback. He didn’t make an exceptional pass rush and he has been average at run stopping. So what about him stands out that makes him more valuable than picking DJ Moore or Louis Murphy (and you can’t accuse me of being a homer there since I am a Die-Hard Nole)? He has been slow, soft and generally irrelevant. It was a terrible pick.

You should really watch the games and stop hatin...
Kyle moore had 3 tackles and a sack vs the Jags and He had a forced fumble and a tackle vs the dolphins. I would say that is pretty good. I have also seen him around the football alot.

What I'm more curious is....
How is Rah and Dominik’s draft going to end up? Most every regime has a bust or two. While I will admit that Gruden/Allen flubbed this up, how forgettable will this Jackson pick be if Freeman is a flop?
by TheUltimateBucFan on Aug 31, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No one really thought Jackson was good and
weren’t surprised when he flopped. If freeman flops, all hell is going to break out. Because Morris is going to give this guy a chance as soon as he feels he is ready and if this guy doesn’t produce it will be Morris head on a stick. I don’t want to think about Freeman flopping after 3 pre-season games.

The only one i believe
to be a bust-ish type is Xavier right now, and that’s a maybe.
WHOO, LUKE! LUKE! LUKE!

To be fair
Xavier was drafted as an Oline project and I’m guessing Biggers is one as well, so time will tell with those two. Overlooking Freeman for now, Sammie, Roy, and Kyle are looking like they’ll be productive from year one which would be a huge improvement over the Gruden Era picks. Looking at the list on Wikipedia, (excluding our guys like Clayton, Phillips, and Jackson) it seems like most of the picks from those years are either out of the league or are struggling backups.

I wonder if
Jackson having to return kicks while carrying a purse hurt his KR average.. Seriously what a b*tch returning kicks. Well, enjoy being an assistant HS coach Dex.
I also wonder what the alleged wunderkind Dominic’s input was on drafting… I kept hearing he played a role in past draft picks, did he have a factor in this turd also?
2nd rd picks are important because they generally should be solid starters towards the end of their 1st contract at a nice price. To get basically nothing from our last 2 except the rights to overpay an overrated malcontent TE is not a way to rebuild this franchise.

Jackson/Stroughter
It didn’t take long to see last year this guy was a dud. I don’t ever remember seeing someone in the NFL so scared on the field. On the other hand, one look at Stroughter’s college game tapes and I was surprised he lasted so long. I guess the other teams were concerned about his depression, but wow, look at his tapes. I think he will be a long term Buc.

If Freeman flops
If Freeman flops a lot of fans will jump all over Morris, and the FO, but try to be a little patient. This year could be a bit disorganized with a new staff, new scheme, new players, etc.. For all of the Flaccos and Ryans and Rothlesbergers there are, there were more Aikmans. Many sucked their first year. Some didn’t develop into stars for several years. If he sucks in three years and can’t develop then blame everyone you want.

You can't judge a player or draft right away
it takes 3 years minimum to know what you got. If it pans out, great. Morris and Dominik were right. If it doesnt, its their job (and if Freeman doesnt pan out, it leads me to believe we’ll be picking high again.)

I mean if we release him in three years
I WILL be all over Dominik and Morris for wasting a first rounder. And, I will be justified in doing so.

No doubt
That would be a travesty and they should be immediately waterboarded for wasting the pick. Just curious, have you ever made a mistake in your first new job?

I have made plenty of mistakes.
However, It does not protect me from criticism just because “mistakes happen.” Nor does the nature of the NFL treat people kindly when they make mistakes of that magnitude.

True
However, I hear people calling for other peoples jobs far too often. Not to say that would be you. Tough criticism is fair. If there is a pattern of bad decisions then he would likely lose his job. I just hear people on the net get so upset over what plays out to be a bad decision. I would hate to have a few thousand people on the net judging every decision I have made. Especially when they have no responsibility for their opinions.

If that happens
you won’t be the first or only person in line. It would absolutely be justified unless Morris or Dominiki intentionally screw him over.

Intentions
I don’t see Morris intentionally screwing over anyone. He doesn’t look like Chucky to me. He may not make it as a coach, but I don’t see that coming from him. I’m more curious if when things get hot for him, he can control guys his own age and have absolute respect from the team.
