Jay Glazer (Foxsports) reports that Byron Leftwich has been named the starting quarterback - Updated
Per Jay Glazer, Raheem Morris has informed the team that Byron Leftwich will be the starting quarterback this year.
He beat out Luke McCown in what can hardly be called a battle over the first three preseason games. Leftwich went 9 of 17 for 100 yards while McCown went 5 of 11 for 38 yards. Neither threw a touchdown or interception, though all of the Bucs points came on Leftwich led drives.
Glazer said Morris informed the team this morning in a meeting of the news. Coach Morris is due to speak to the media around 11:30 AM ET, and I imagine will be spilling the beans then.
In other news, the Bucs cut four players, the most notable being Kelly Campbell. This gets the Bucs to 76 players. They need to be at 75 by September first and down to 53 by September 5th.
Update: Reports, specifically from PFT, are saying that Freeman will open the season as the 3rd QB. Does this mean Josh Johnson will go in as #2, or are we sticking with McCown and dumping JJ?
Update #2: Morris has now said that Leftwich had the lead coming into camp (then why give McCown the new deal?) and that McCown closed the gap during camp. McCown will open the season as the #2 QB and Josh Johnson still has a shot to make the team. This might be another year carrying 4 QB's, and we lack depth at other positions. One of the three (Leftwich, McCown, Johnson) need to get shipped out to free up some room, maybe net a draft pick, and allow us to keep other players. The truth is, we don't need to develop Luke or JJ if Freeman is the guy in 2010.
Will be back for analysis on this deal later in the weekend.

WOOH
FINALLY!!!
now let’s trade mccown, wait for leftwich to get injured, so JJ can play :)
we need to run the ball 60% the time now (with our great backs), and throw the ball on play-action with Lefty’s cannon!
GO BUCS!!!!

Urgh...
Although it is good that the team has named a starter, I don’t know if Leftwich was the right one. McCown impressed me slightly more than Leftwich on his ability to feed the ball in tight spots and get the ball out.
Needless to say I wasn’t impressed with any of them this preseason and I’m hoping Freeman gets some game time experience this year.

God....
Sadly, I’ll be surprised if our Bucs win 4 games. Oh well…..high draft pick next year.

Which could be a good side of it...
If the pick is used wisely! Not something that has been proved by this regime, Yet, Hopefully!

Tye, big time disagree with you here
This regime has drafted better than 1995. Sammy Stroughter in 7th? This regime has hit home on more hits than we have in many years.
My Buddy went somewhere to get high and watch some good fights, and after a few minutes a Bucs Practice broke out.

Well what can I say Niko.....
At least one of us is excited about the way things are going. It is what it is!
I will admit Sammy Stroughter is a positive move out of them all.

Not only stroughter
What about roy miller in the 3rd and Kyle Moore in the 4th? Those are going to be 2 guys that will be cracking the regular rotation on the D-Line. The bucs have done a good job drafting and I like the way this team is rounding out. I think that the bucs were getting very old and that is why they have been breaking down towards the end of the year. They probably didn’t practice and if they did , they didn’t do much. These young guys will be full of energy and now this team looks extremely hungry. Offense looks very explosive and can’t wait to see AB and Clayton full time with this offense. Leftwich is the guy for this team because this is a veteran group on offense that is all about to or beginning their prime. Leftwich is a leader and that is what this offense needs.

What a Huge disappointment.....
It may be BRUTAL to watch him this season but it is what it is! (Ugh)

Leftwich threw too high on a few passes that could’ve helped the Bucs..I figured they would go with him

I think that leftwich made all the right reads in the big game.
Leftwich played clearly better than McCown in the do or die game. He moved the ball and produced the only pts the bucs got – 2 fg’s . He made all the right reads , he just threw the ball high on a couple. I am encouraged by this because I don’t think he will miss those throws again. You don’t make it to the NFL if you can’t throw , he can throw and I think that he gives us the best chance to win because he has won before and he played good. If you take out the overthrows, would you say he played a good game? I thinik the answer would be YES! So if you can answer that question as Yes then That is your guy.

couple thoughts and correction
“Neither threw a touchdown or interception, though all of the Bucs points came on Leftwich led drives.”
If I remember right, McCown threw 2 touchdown passes in the second preseason game. I think you might’ve meant that neither threw a touchdown the last game, but it reads the three preseason games.
Another issue which I don’t think is a mistake, but McCown signed the deal before Leftwich was even signed. Part of the surprise signing of Leftwich was the fact that McCown just had gotten a new deal.
I’m kind of dissapointed with the pick. From the way I read things, it seemed as Luke was resigned to compete the starting job and would get it unless someone beat him out. Leftwich might have arguably played a tad better and I emphasize arguably but I don’t think anyone could say he beat McCown. I believe that they both played equally well.. neither great but both pretty good. In this situation, it would seem that since McCown was the incumbant and Leftwich didn’t unanimously beat McCown that he should be chosen.
It isn’t my decision and I will still support the team, but it does bring one to consider the integrity of the team. From my eyes and I could be wrong, but it appears that Raheem leans toward a buddy system. I’m not going to say that as fact but this pick did have me start to think this way. I hope I will be shown otherwise..
also a note on McCown.. He is always a professional. This decision is probably the biggest slap in his face but look how he handled himself. I hope we don’t choose to disrespect the man in the comments because he handles himself very well. He works hard and always puts the team first. This should earn him the respect to not be belittled by bucs own fans.

Here is why...
Number 1, You could see that Leftwich is a LEADER!! He moved the ball consistently, and there is no doubt that he has been a winner in this league before. With a proven offensive unit, you need a guy who is going to command control and respect. You could see in the preseason games that the offense looked good when he was in the game and the offense clearly struggled when luke was in with the exception to the great field position in game 2. Luke manufactured 0 points when he had toput a drive together and that probably was the deciding factor. In game 1 and 3 , luke scored 0 points while leftwich put up 16pts. Luke opened eyes after game 2 but didn’t build on it the 3rd game and that was what cost him. When you do something great 1 day, you need to follow it up with another good day atleast , you can’t play ok or poor and thats what luke did.
You could also see the playbook opened up more when leftwich was in because he had the confidence of the team, coaches and coordinator. Luke seemed to be playing out of a rookie playbook because he was boxed into a 10 yard radius. He didn’t show the ability to make the splash plays that Jag’s likes to make when he goes play-action. Leftwich stong point is the play-action pass and that is Jag’s main focus so the decision was easy. Leftwich fits the offense better than Luke. Thats why Leftwich was bought in and won the job.

In Lukes Defense
Luke McCown was a competitor, he showed flashes and gave the fans what they wanted to see. Luke has sat and waited his turn for 5 years. He seemed to be forced in to a few difficult decisions. He was put out there the first games as a starter vs the Titans who is a top 3 or 5 defense in the NFL. He had also had a new offense coord., receivers and coach. These are tough circumstances. He struggled because of this. They always say that the first impression is a lasting one and this might have been what ultimately turned people off about him. He didn’t get much started as far as the run, which can help a young qb. Receivers didn’t do much to help him by running wrong routes and dropping passes. Luke got the first opportunity and if def didn’t go the way fans, coach or even luke had hoped. But thats life in the NFL. He should hope for a trade to the packers or another team because it is clear that he can’t lead a bunch of nobodies. I think that he could help a team that has a strong running game and some great receivers and they better have a offensive line that can pass block.
Things that McCown needs to improve on:
1) reading defenses faster – takes way to long and often leads to sacks. With his mobility he shouldn’t be getting sacked as much.
2) be aggressive – you can’t beat anyone in a competition if you are playing nervous or conservative. He has to learn how to stretch a defense with his arm. Look downfield and throw it , give your WR’s atleast a chance to play. Guys aren’t going to be wide open but you haveto put them in a spot to make a good play.
3) Be a leader – It is the QB job to make all the right checks and reads vs Blitz. He didn’t have a chance on some plays but on some plays, he could have stepped to his left or up to make a throw, he looked to run to often or roll to his right. Has to learn to stand tall in the pocket.
Luke is young and will get another shot to start someday, it probably won’t be with the bucs because I think that some team is going to give up a draft pick for him. Prob a 7th rounder.

Luke also had a horrible O-Line this past game.
I think they should have called game 3 a wash and brought the competition to game 4. From what I saw, Leftwich was consistently overthrowing receivers, and McCown had very little protection.

Leftwich saw his receivers and luke too sacks
Leftwich overthrew his receivers but he also made alot of good plays. Stop making excuses for why luke didn’t get the job done. He had every chance to take the job and he didn’t. He sat in the pocket, looked at the blitz and didn’t change the protection, audible or do anything. He just took sacks. There is no excuse for taking 2 sacks when you are in fg range to put you out of range. Luke reads are just to slow, dont’ blame the line when luke didn’t get rid of the ball when the blitz came. Luke just isn’t good enough, point blank. He couldn’t beat out garcia, greise, simms, gradkowski, rob johnson or Leftwich. Just accept the fact that he just flat out isn’t good enough and he proved that this preseason. A higher qb rating and completion percentage isn’t good enough when you don’t move the offense, you get sacked and get an intentional grounding, you have over 100 yards less than the guy your competing against. That isn’t going to win you a starting job In the NFL.

Re: points scored
I think you must have missed the second game; McCown led the team to 2 touchdowns. Somehow though, he didnt get to start the 3rd game; Leftwich started both 2nd and 3rd game; not much of an even competition.

Leftwich was the leader, 1 game is not going to chance...
all of OTA, Minicamp, and training camp. If luke wanted to start the 3rd game , he should have played better when he got a chance to start. He went 4 for 8 for 19 yards passing. That is not going to get you a start because you converted a short field 2 times in 1 game. Consistency is what Luke has to get. He played terrible, great , then pretty terrible. That is not what a coach is looking for. Leftwich was 61 yard, 63 and 100 yards thru the air. Luke was 19, 51 and 38. Morris want to stretch field , thats not lukes strength
