Starting QB...

Raheem Morris announced he will reveal the starting quarterback after the second preseason game, so the first team offense can get in a rhythm, and know who their leader is...

So i just got back from reading an article at www.pewterreport.com, and it was about the announcement. So i scrolled down to read some of the comments from the fans, and boy-oh-boy do we have mixed reviews...

I've been thinking recently how our team would fair with each scenario.  A lot of people have been bagging on Luke McCown because he's not showing 'the fire' he claims to have.  I personally don't think he should start for us.  Leftwitch...ehhh i'm not all too happy about. Freeman, well, he has much to learn. But a new name was brought up in the discussion, Josh Johnson. Sure he's not talked about much, and when you talk about the Tampa Bay qb's, you think McCown, Leftwich, and Freeman.

Where does Josh Johnson fit? He's Gruden's project...5th round pick from San Diego. Threw 44 TD's and 1 INT his senior year. But that was a small college. Somehow, he's stuck around. He has poise in the pocket, and made a couple nice throws. Not just in the last game, but last year's preseason too. He can also make plays with his feet.

People at that site were calling McCown to get cut, and Josh Johnson to stay...to start, or back-up Leftwitch. We then keep Freeman as our third.

I agree, McCown to be cut (but darnit we signed him to a 2yr deal...). After 6 years, he's done nothing spectacular. Sure, he's a great guy, great attitude, and a great athlete, but really? A leader? I don't think he is capable of leading us. Maybe i'm wrong, and all the talk is getting to my head. Call me crazy, but I want to see Josh Johnson play. Maybe not starter, but at least see what he's got against some first stringers. I feel we're not really giving him a chance. Please Raheem, make the right decision...

Well, anyways, let me know what you think!  Who would you like to see as starter on day 1? And who is capable of being backup???

Whatever happens, we should all be supportive ;)

QB

The QB for the season opener is going going to be Leftwich. He is the most experienced, he has the biggest arm and he has proven that he can be a leader/winner in this league. All of these guys we have don’t have experience and i just believe that the offense looked the best with him under center. The team scored 10 pts (a touchdown, a late field goal) In the second quater. The running game got going because he was able to come off of the bench slinging the football downfield. If you can losen the defense with deep throws , that opens up the run and then the play action. I don’t know what people see in luke besides athleticism. He has not shown the ability to lead or even throw the ball downfield. People tend to talk about a persons weakness, when they should focus on the strengths. If a persons strengths can be put on display , you can cover up their weakness.

Leftwich strenghs are his fearlessness, big arm and experience. In order for him to be successful, the bucs need to get the running game going and get the line to pass protect( that is what they are paid for). In order to offset his weakness of having a slow delivery, the bucs need to get the run going so it can set up the playaction. You guys seem to have a short memory and forget the success this guy had early in his career in jacksonville. He has alot of weapons with this bucs team and I just think that he is the guy who can get these guys the ball. We have 4 good running backs, 2 good receivers and 2 of the top TE’s in the league. People will haveto respect the bucs offense more than they ever have.Give the guy some blocking and he will pick teams apart. I guarantee it.

I would like to see Josh johnson stay, anytime a guy can run away from a whole defense..he has potential to be a wildcat qb. I think that he can provide 10 plays a game for the bucs, just to give them more offensive options. The guy looks to be a big time talent and i would rather take a chance on him than luke mcCown. I think that JJ needs to be the backup qb, he is less expensive and he can bring a change of pace for a few plays a game. Josh Freeman can be the guy holding the clipboard for the year until he gets a better understanding of the NFL. I really see something special in JJ, I don’t think that he has shown enough to be a starter but i do think that he can come in and be involved in some type of wildcat formation for a few plays.

couldn't have said it better myself...

and good news:
i just read a small report at www.rotoworld.com that the Buccaneers organization is high on Josh Johnson, so hopefully this comes true.

   Josh Johnson-QB- Buccaneers Aug. 18 – 6:27 pm et
Backup quarterback Josh Johnson “remains highly regarded” by the Bucs’ organization, according to NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora.

Johnson reportedly would’ve been favored to start had Jon Gruden stayed on, and much of Tampa’s staff hasn’t changed. La Canfora even suggests that Johnson could bump Luke McCown off the roster. The Bucs don’t plan to keep four QBs. It appears they’ll decide between the latter two at final cuts.

if we can establish a running game we'll be okay

luke didn’t have any protection and they couldn’t establish a run. he’s atheletic enough to warrant another chance. leftwich is the guy if they started the season tomorrow based on his poise and leadership. he could win some games for us, but that wont last. he moves like a geriatric. johnson was exciting to watch. i would love to see him get the nod. i still think they’ll give luke another look based on his ability to move around and the fact that they’re paying him.

I tend to agree....

I haven’t posted much at all here, however, I read the posts everyday and have done so for quite awhile… With the QB battle coming to an end I figure I will chime in on the issue. Overall I tend to agree with recent comments about McCown vs. Leftwich. IMO Leftwich is our guy this year. I thought that from the time we signed him. I have always felt leftwich is a good QB who got a bad wrap due to injuries mostly. I think if Lefty stays healthy we will have an offense better then we have seen in a long time.

Not to say McCown is no good, however, the way I have looked at it since day 1 was that he had 1 year in Cleveland and now 4 years int he NFL…Coming in to his 6th season total he has not done anything to prove he has what it takes. I know people were saying Gruden didn’t like him or whatever, I just have a hard time believing that if really had what it takes regardless of personal feelings Gruden would not have passed over him for Griese when Garcia was out. Maybe I am wrong and he is awesome, however, he did not do anything to bolster my confidence in the first preseason game vs. the Titans.

I would be perfectly happy if we kept Lefty as the starter, Johnson as the backup, let Freeman ride the pine and hold the clip board and cut McCown.

Either way, I will support whoever ends up starting…

...well, so much for that...

2-4 24yds….just what i wanted to hear.
mccown throws for 2tds.
leftwich throws for 0tds, but is efficient in passing.
Tampa, i guess all we gotta do now is wait for the great RAHEEM MORRIS to speak haha, Johnson didn’t do much, and now McCown battled back…
things are going to get interesting…

Leftwich will be named starting qb.

because he did what a qb is suppose to do. He moved the ball efficiently and he controlled the game. He got the running game going, he didn’t get sacked and didn’t throw a int. He did just enough to keep his lead. He was 6 for 12, 61 yards.

McCown did throw 2 td but he had the advantage of having a short field. He just isn’t able to move a offense on a consistent basis because he is more of a west coast qb, it seems as tho the playbook gets shortened with mcCown in the game. I have not see McCown even attempt a deep throw to put pressure on the defense. He was 6 for 9 for 51 yards. Which isn’t bad but he hasn’t been givin the keys to a offense this far and I doubt he gets a opportunity to this year either.

Freeman worked himself back into the QB race to become the backup. He looked very impressive. He had poise and savvy back in the pocket and as you saw, he can run. I think that he should be number 2 and JJ should be number 3 and cut luke.

Just keep the Joshs

I can’t decide between Luke and Lefty. One should go. Couldn’t we ditch Lefty without losing money? Not sure how that works. Whatever happen’s, we should keep both JJ and JF. They need to let both of them run a half each while in preseason. See how they hold the team. Preseason doesn’t tell all, but I think JJ is underrated and JF has the fire for a decent backup. The future as we see it right now is JJ or JF.

Leftwich can be dumped with no out of pocket costs for 2009

How is this so??

Leftwich and Luke have the same contract, 2 years, 7.5 million. One of them will go if they aren’t named the starter. Josh freeman is def the franchise QB and he looks good. He will def be the 2nd qb and jj will be 3rd. Either qb will be on a short leash and freeman will replace them mid season. Leftwich because of injury and McCown will be for lack of performance.

What was the bonus paid to Leftwich?

I dont think he got one, meaning we owe him nothing if he isnt on the opening day roster.

What Raheem is going thru now is, he realizes his mistake in overlooking Josh Johnson. But it’s too late!! I would hate to be in his position right now. First, you give a 2.5 mil signing bonus to a journeyman (Luke McCown). Second, you signed another loser (Leftwich). Then to top it all off you draft a young qb. All of which get outplayed by JJ in camp.

Assessment of Olson

I saw some differences in the play calling

1) Saw first screen passes. Will work vs blitz and take pressure off Leftwich.

2)Saw runs in the red zone.

3) Saw better routes by WR, not as many mix ups.

4) Saw TE get some plays called for him. Purvis scored a TD , During the season that will be Winslow or Stevens. TE had very few plays called for them the first 3 games.

5) Bryant will make those plays that Urrutia didn’t. I like to see the Fades and slants in the red zone. Never ran those plays under gruden or Jags.

Overall, I was happier with the play calls and I def could see the difference. Looked to have more variety on offense. Looked to have more options on the routes and I saw a bit of the spread offense that is run alot in college. The guy has 3 years of OC vs Jags 1 year. I like the move. What are your thoughts?
