Announcing the Buc ‘Em Ring of Honor Finalists

First of all, a big round of applause to all of you that nominated anyone for inclusion in the first year of the Buc ‘Em Ring of Honor. We received nominations for 47 different individuals (although we had to throw Ronde Barber out as he is still an active Buccaneer). And 21 individuals received multiple nominations. From there, the four of us went through a number of different ideas of how to narrow it down, before coming up with the ultimate decision. Here’s a little background of why we decided to go with the finalists you see below…

To start, we decided 47 was just too many. While there were some great nominations and no one is undeserving, we decided to eliminate anyone who only received one nomination. Why? Well because most of them would probably not end up getting a single vote when we got to the poll. We definitely appreciate the nominations, but we didn’t want a list of that many people to vote for when realistically a much smaller number would be getting probably 99% of the votes.

We then looked at the 21 who received multiple nominations, but again decided that was too much. Although it’s great that a couple of people thought Mark Carrier was worth a nomination, is he really going to get inducted over someone like Lee Roy Selmon or Warren Sapp? No, he’s not.

So we went back and forth on the final number before deciding on 10. 10 is a nice number. It gives each person a good chance to get a number of votes. And it had a clean break (each of the finalists received 6 or more nominations). So without further adieu, we present to you the Buc ‘Em Ring of Honor Finalists:

Lee Roy Selmon
Ricky Bell
Doug Williams
James Wilder
Hardy Nickerson
John Lynch
Mike Alstott
Derrick Brooks
Warren Sapp
Tony Dungy

Over the next few weeks, you will be provided with bios of each of the finalists and sometime after that the voting will begin. We plan on inducting the first two members of the Ring of Honor before the 2009 season begins. But until then, enjoy a video of the finalists put together by niko521bucs.

Alstott definitely

Fan favorite and all around super nice guy. Someone you want your kids to Idolize as a sports celebrity. Did and still does great things for the TB community. Definitely a first ballot HOF’r. His popularity transcended the league. Other teams fans could not help but love to watch the guy play and pined over why some of there teams players didn’t have his kind of character. I like all of them but Alstott is definitely the guy.

I'll make a friendly wager with you right now...

…and don’t take this the wrong way. Alstott did contribute to the Bucs on the field and the Tampa community off it. But he’s not a first ballot Hall of Famer. If Cris Carter can’t make it on the first ballot, no way does Alstott.

Carter

Was also considered a sh#t bag for the first half of his career and was never a nationwide fan favorite and while I am in no way comparing Alstott to Barry Sanders in on the field production I will compare him to Sanders in the fact that even when he was beating the crap out of your team you still loved to watch him play. And yes he is going in as a Fullback. There has not been a fullback make the impact of Alstott in probably the last 30 years. There may have been some prior to the ’70’s before the pass was perfected but not since then. Cris Carter is not even in the same class of players as far as overall. I guess we’ll see.

Big problem with that...

…is yes he will be going in as a fullback, but everyone knows he wasn’t one. He didn’t get his numbers lined up as a fullback. Although he was a good blocker as well, he was a better single back running back. Hall of Fame voters know this. They know what he was listed at and what he really played.

Look, I don’t have anything against him at all, I just think we (Tampa fans) grossly overrated him as a player. He was a good one for quite some time and could make the Hall someday, but first ballot (and remember this is just my opinion) is reserved for the truly great. As good as Alstott might have been, he was not on the same level of guys like Brooks and Sapp.

Lorenzo Neal

A pure fullback…Neal. Easily. Alstott wasn’t a true fullback at all.
