Should the Bucs look ahead to next off-seasons Free Agent QB Class?
Posted on behalf of the man with the red and pewter plan, JScott.
To some of your chagrin’s the Buccaneers are set to work out Kansas State QB Josh Freeman next week, April 14-15, Tuesday and Wednesday. If for some reason the Bucs decide not to bring in a fourth QB and Luke McCown or Josh Johnson struggle next season, there is always next off-seasons Free Agent QB Class (or is there?):
What Bucs fans can get keep tabs on for next off-season in the event that McCown or Johnson fail is the College Football season. Texas QB Colt McCoy, Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, and Florida QB Tim Tebow will all be available via the NFL Draft. Bradford and McCoy would have been Top 10 Quarterbacks this off-season had they declared for the Draft. Tebow’s projected draft slot is up in the air as Draft Experts (ugh) think he needs to change positions in the NFL. If Doug Flutie can make it as an NFL QB with his heart and passion, there will be nothing stopping Tim Tebow. This is something to keep tabs on, as a lot can happen between now and then…

Campbell is underrated
Dan Snyder has surrounded him with at best a decent offensive line, some middling wide receivers and has expected him to be fantastic. He’s actually been above average for his career so far. I could see Campbell fitting in well with you guys.

He's awful.
He has NO leadership abilities, he doesn’t get excited about football and he is a terrible decision maker.
I would rather have Kyle Orton than him (and I don’t want Orton).
There is also quite a bit of murmur coming from the Seahawks camp about either trading Hasselbeck or just flat out releasing him. I actually think that Hasselbeck is a very underrated quarterback throughout his career and that he still has several good years left in him. Just an idea to store in the back of your noggins.

I don't really support either, but...
…Campbell has a higher rating, better TD-to-INT ratio, and higher completion percentage in almost the same amount of games (36 to Orton’s 33). Both have gotten better since they have come into the league and either might be worth a look.

Sure....
but he’s not a winner. A quarterback can be above average and still not be a good quarterback. It is about FAR MORE than what you do with your arm.

Can't pin all of that on him...
…the Redskins aren’t exactly the model of putting together a franchise over the past few years. They’ve thrown tons of money at overrated players time after time. It’s not like Campbell is losing games himself.

i'll stick it in my noggin
but he gets injured like my grandmother… aka all the time… no thanks! ha! i’d rather go with McCown
nice suggestion though and i’m with you on Campbell 100%, in four seasons his career completion percentage is crap… the guy defines mediocrity

I mean...he's not that injury prone.
He missed quite a few last year, yes, but 06 was the only other year where he missed some games. He has had a much better than average injury record.

nah
i’d rather suck it up on a Campbell argument for all to see… if it’s any consolation my best friend is a Auburn fan and so i have a biased disdain for them coming into the argument that obviously leaves me blind at times

Job Fit
It is all about if the QB fits in to the offensive scheme. Cutler was good at Denver but could be horrible in Chicago, simply because he does not fit in there. Campbell, Orton, or Hasselbeck could be excellent for the Bucs if they fit into the offense well and have a decent relationship with their receivers. All three of them are decent QBs they just need a better job fit. Also we still have no idea if we will even need any one of them depending on what McCown or Johnson do this season.

if the bears have a smart coaching staff
they will fit their offensive scheme to Cutler’s abilities. Hopefully Jags does that here as well, Bates included. You tend to fail when you try to stuff square pegs into circle slots. It’s why Gruden ultimately failed. You don’t throw the ball 30+ times a game when you have suspect QB’s, a better than average offensive line and good-to-great runningbacks

If McCown, Johnson, Griese, and mystery QB #4 all flop miserably...
They’ll address QB through the draft, not in FA, and presumably would have a high enough pick to grab one of the elite guys. FA is going to be just as ugly next year as it was this year for the QB position. I’m not sweating it, though. 16 games to be played between now and then. I’m excited to see what McCown and Johnson can do in the preseason.

Better luck next year at QB position!
I don’t wanna see any of those free agents on our roster next year, except for Rivers, he’s a cool cat. Drafting Freeman in the 1st…. doesn’t seem like the smartest idea. Plus i am not sold on him, how many QBs are there every draft who have the physical tools but not the mental strength?
I am excited about next years draft, assuming that we have a high draft pick. I would be happy having: McCoy, Bradford or Tebow as our future QB. So in this draft we should draft DT Raji/Jerry or LB Cushing/Matthews. Draft QB next year.
