Buccaneers work out an extension with TE Kellen Winslow, Jr.
reports are coming out that kellen winslow jr. has signed an extension with the buccaneers. the contract is for six years and extends his current one of two years. Winslow is to make 4.25 million this year and 4.5 next year off his old contract. No numbers were released about his new contract as is team policy. As a fan of the bucs i find this as great news and can't wait to see his natural abilitys dominate the opposing defenses.
Craig T: Kudos to The420BucsFan for bringing the news to the community. Kellen Winslow, Jr. has signed a 6-year, $36.1 million extension with the Bucs that could exceed $42 million with incentives. This is the largest contract in NFL history for a TE. I'll repeat that again.... THIS IS THE LARGEST CONTRACT IN NFL HISTORY FOR A TE. Christ amighty. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they worked out an extension, but it seems like a high figure for this early juncture. I understand that Winslow is entering a contract year and I don't know how long they've been negotiating since the trade, but it's only April. I only wonder if the Bucs put up more dough than they needed to.

Good move
Pay him, keep him happy, he’ll keep his mouth shut more than he did in Cleveland. If he can stay healthy, this could easily go down (along with the trade, obviously) as the best move of the offseason for the Bucs… I can’t wait to see this offense take the field.

numbers
via ESPN— “Winslow, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, agreed to a six-year, $36.1 million deal that includes $20.1 million in guarantees. With incentives, the deal could grow to $42.1 million.”—-link

wow
I hope it works out, because if not, 6 years is a long time, I’m hoping he doesn’t get hurt and will have to sit out a season…

I don't think Winslow is overpaid...
Granted, the amount and the length of the contract can be a lot to take in at first. However, Winslow is only guaranteed less than half (20.1 million) of the 42.1 million dollars he can earn. The difference is that hopefully we weren’t as stupid as the Redskins were when they signed Haynesworth. He is guaranteed 30 million….the first 13 months of the contract! That is ridiculous. I hope Dominik was a little wiser.

To Soon
I understand that he is an excellent player, but he has a bad knee and has stated the when he plays he is in continuous pain due to the knee. It seems like the Bucs should have at least waited till the end of training camp before doing this deal and lowering the amount of money a bit.

Why?
Shouldn’t he produce in Tampa before we show him the money?

I agree with that sentiment.

this could end up back firing since antonio bryant is still gonna wanna contract, once he sees we made winslow the highest paid TE hes gonna want the same for him !

for all the people talking about production...
the guy put up insane numbers in 06 and 07, and would have continued in 08 had he not been sidelined with whatever funky staph virus he had in the second half of the season. He’s proven that he can have 80+ catch, 900+ yard seasons at the pro level. I don’t see any reason not to pay him, especially in light of the fact that A: the Bucs have enough cap room to make it happen, and B: the whole friction with Cleveland centered around him not getting paid properly for his high level of production… now that he’s the highest paid TE in the league (at least until someone else inevitably goes over the top of this contract), conventional wisdom would say that he’ll keep his mouth shut off the field.

I LOVE
the idea of having incentives in his contract
I know an extra 6 million dollars would make me work harder

more on the contract from si.com
I think the real story of the Kellen Winslow contract is it is hardly the biggest contract ever for a tight end, as was advertised. Winslow will earn $11.8 million guaranteed his first two years of the six-year deal, but he was already on course to earn $10.5 million in the next two years of his existing contract. In year three with Tampa Bay, Winslow is to earn $8.2 million, and the year is guaranteed for injury only. If Winslow’s performance in year two is mediocre, the Bucs can cut him without paying him another dime.
But let’s say he makes all of what he’s supposed to make in the first three years of his deal. Winslow would make $20.1 million. In the first three years of Colts tight end Dallas Clark’s deal, Clark makes $27.5 million. For my blood, the Bucs have too much guaranteed money in the deal for a guy who’s been hurt so much. But after paying second- and fifth-round picks for him, they also had to justify it with some new money in a contract. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/04/12/mmqb/3.html like i said thanks to si and peter king
