Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Raheem Morris defends his decision to select Kansas State QB Josh Freeman with the 17th Overall selection in the NFL Draft:

"You know, I made this statement the other day. If I had the Detroit Lions pick at No. 1, I might have taken Josh Freeman. I might have been fighting for him. Our owner is very excited, they haven't had an opportunity to be this excited for 15 years and they are really pumped up. They've got a chance for a franchise quarterback, man. That's our quarterback, to quote T.O." - Head Coach Raheem Morris on drafting Josh Freeman per the St. Pete Times

Well I guess it's a good thing we didn't have the #1 Overall Pick, this would have been worse than the picks the Chiefs and Raiders made. Having said that Raheem is obviously wagering his career on Freeman's success, so if he is willing to do that you have to believe that they know what they are doing. What gives me closure is the fact that Jeff Jagodzinski is on board, he obviously signed off on this pick-up.

Raheem Morris on the process of selecting QB Josh Freeman:

"There is always a danger of having too much information on a guy, There's no question about it. And I recognized that. So early in the process, I tried to stay back, you don't push a guy, you don't sell a guy, you don't even give your opinion of a guy because you don't want to sway people's opinion in the building. You just want him to get a chance to be around people. So you bring him in on a pre-draft visit, you meet with him at the combine, you let the coaches evaluate the tape. You talk to him later. You get their opinions. You let them tell you what they believe. And then you say what you believe. Then you get all in the same circles, all in the same hat, you mix it up and you pull out a solution. He was the solution." - Head Coach Raheem Morris on drafting Josh Freeman per the St. Pete Times

Again I take solace in that everyone was on board with this selection as it will be the Draft pick that makes or breaks their time here in Tampa, no doubt, it was that huge of a pick. I know I'm reading too much into this quote, but I get the sense Freeman may play earlier than we all expected. Raheem said he was the solution, the solution to what? Our current QB corps. Well if he is the solution, what is McCown, Leftwich, Johnson, and Griese? Obviously not the answers...

Raheem on his familiarity with Freeman:

"I was lucky enough to be there when he came in as a freshman and I watched him lead us and beat teams. We didn't have a whole lot of talent around us, but every time he walked on that field, no matter who we were playing that week, whether it was Texas or FIU. It didn't matter. You felt like you had a chance to win with this guy leading you. We didn't always do it. He wasn't able to lead them to as many wins as he would've liked to in his career. Hopefully, he can do that here. I'm actually positive and excited about him coming and doing it here." - Raheem Morris per the St. Pete Times

His familiarity with Josh Freeman can't be overlooked with this selection. It was clearly a strong deciding factor or he wouldn't even discuss this issue with the media. Freeman did have a mediocre college career at a mediocre university, but that's where Jeff Jagodzinski steps in. It's on him to get this kid to reach his potential and i have complete confidence in his abilities.

Holy Hell!!!!

I go to work for 8 hard earned hours and all I want to do is come home and enjoy the newest Buccaneer for a minute. And I get this instead? Josh Frukin Freeman? Are you serious? WOW! Never have I wavered on how hard core a Buc Fan I am. How loyal a fan I am. How much I love my beloved Buccaneers. Never had I doubted my love for my team. Until now.

I almost want to run up and down Dale Mabry Buc Naked waving a posterboard in the air calling for Mark Dominik’s head. Hell, Raheem Morris’ too. I am beyond disappointed. All I have to say is that I hope they prove me wrong when I say that I believe they made a huge mistake selecting Freeman.

Mr. Morris, prove me wrong!

I agree to the MAX.

I couldn’t be more disappointed in Morris and Dominik. Every person that was in that War room for that matter. So far in my eyes Morris hasn’t done anything to deserve respect as a credible Head Coach. So many talented players were passed up for his “BUDDY”. Forget all the positions that Lack depth, less draft our friends and get them a huge pay check that they don’t deserve. It’s probably just the emotions of the moment but I say since he is willing to risk so much on his friend especially after releasing Brooks and June which caused more holes and not fill them on Defense, place a condition on his job that the Bucs better at least go 8-8 or out the gate.

lol

the condition is already there, it’s not based on his record, but it is based on his team’s performance if they flatline he’ll probably be gone, because it will prove he wasnt the motivator the Glazers thought he was… It only makes sense for him to bring in his guys, as it’s his team, his job, his lively hood….

In time we will see

So true...

I just read on profotballtalk.com that Freeman is now telling reporters in his interviews that the Bucs told him days ago that the Leftwich signing was a smoke screen.

So who's being released

J.J, Mccown, Leftwich, or Griese. I for one hope it is leftwich or griese but i wouldn’t care as long as raheem morris proves me wrong about drafting freeman.

"Yeah, I am not the old annoying guy next door. Heck, I don't even know who i am"

i think it is Brian Griese

for sure, he missed the three day voluntary mini camp last month, granted his wife was 8 months pregnant (with their 3rd child). A man with his money could flown back and forth,,, regardless i think he is on the outside looking in, though Leftwich wasnt given any guaranteed money so he to could be cut easily. You would think one of them would hang around with a veteran presence

it doesnt make sense for the Bucs to carry four Quarterbacks, especially two who are essentially rookies in Johnson and Freeman, so Johnson could conceivably get cut, McCown has been labeled as the best athlete on the team so i couldnt see him getting cut…

it’s going to be interesting…

Starting QB Battle between McCown and Leftwich… Freeman will hold a clipboard all season, while Josh Johnson may or may not make the roster come cuts

We should trade McCown..

cut Griese, have Leftwich be our starter, Johnson be our backup and have Freeman start at number three. I don’t think our team is all that great and Freeman will probably get a chance at the end of the season.

I am not sure what McCown can get for us but I bet Denver might be interested.

definitely a late draft pick

5th rounder at best, probably more like a 6th rounder

Bust!

First time posting in here, but glad to see I Considering the fact passing on V. Davis, Maclin, Harvin even. I mean we could have traded down and had a 2nd rd pick. He would have been there in the late 1st rd. My question is why not wait till next year? We’d be picking top 10 when Bradford and company come out……

Please sell the team to the DeBartalo’s. That’s how we start winning. see 49ers in the 80’s-90’s.

I was sittin there....

Like hell yeah Vontae Davis along side Talib with Barber to groom them and play the nickle…. And then…. It just makes no sense.

I know it sounds bad but man Dominick doesn’t want his job. And if he (Freeman) is great I’ll be the first to apologize.
