Head Coach Raheem Morris: Quarterback Competition is underway

Jets Fans have Brett Ratliff and Kellen Clemens, the Browns have Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, and the list goes on in the NFL as far as in camp Quarterback competitions go. Add the Buccaneers to the list: Luke McCown, Josh Johnson, Brian Griese, and Player-to-be-named later. That’s all a fan base can ask for from its new regime (a healthy competition) and the man at the helm said as much will happen in preparation for the season:

"I'm trying to create the most competitive environment as I can. Between Luke (McCown), Josh (Johnson) and Brian (Griese), I'm going to let those guys fight it out to see who's going to be the player. As of right now, that's who is on our team, that's who we're talking about. We do want to add a fourth quarterback, however that may come. You've got to create as much competition as you can. Let the guy earn his spot, people will respect it more, he'll respect it more and people will look him in the eye, shake his hand and tell him, "Hey, you're the guy and they'll feel good about it, whomever that guy is. I'm just having fun doing it. I'm just running a big defensive back room, that's all I'm doing is creating competition. There just happens to be 66 of them right now rather than 15.'' – Head Coach Raheem Morris on the ensuing QB Competition this off-season per Rick Stroud of the St. Pete Times

How great is that? We’ve all alluded to wanting this. We’ve heard Mark and Raheem hint toward it, but now he’s come out and officially put his stamp on it. All three four guys will start on the same page when camp opens and whoever rises to the top will be the guy. If they do run a true competition like Raheem suggests, I’ve got my money on Josh Johnson. He and Luke are both the same size 6’3 210-220 pounds. Luke’s been with the Bucs longer, but with an entirely new system in place all of that experience falls to the waste side. By JJ’s college numbers alone he appears to be more accurate and adept at avoiding a sack. Luke’s athletic too though and so this should prove to be a tough competition. Don’t forget Brian Griese either, all he did was win for us when he was put in ball games. It may not be pretty, but he gets the job done.

Whoever shows that killer instinct, an ability to take chances and immediately shrug off unfavorable outcomes while proving to have learned from them, will be the guy the coaching staff puts its faith in come the regular season. The one question that remains is who will be that fourth Quarterback? They’ve shown absolutely no interest in any of the available Free Agent QB’s on the market. I’m thinking the fourth guy has to come from the NFL Draft. I would venture to say he’s coming in that first or third round. They’ve already got a second day tweener on the roster in Josh Johnson, so they wouldn’t bring aboard a Rhett Bomar or Chase Daniel on Draft Day. If Mark Sanchez falls, Josh Freeman is still available (aka the Jets don’t reach for him), or Graham Harrell is there in the third round I could see the Bucs going one of those routes. We already know the fan base will get behind whoever that guy is, hopefully the coaching staff gives him more than a handful of games to show us what he’s got.

Ok!!

I guess this is good news, looking forward to camp again this year!! JJ definetely needs his shot at the job and if he gets it done, then we might have a decent if not good starter this year!!! Mccown has been ready and if he doesn’t get the starting job then expect another decent 2nd string QB, Griese is 3rd or 4th, depends on who we pick up!!!

woot woot!

Yea I’m really looking forward to Josh Johnson to quarterback.

JScott posted this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiIVukeqZg8 of Luke McCown against the New Orleans Saints.

I recall i think 2 or 3 years ago when Bruce Gradkowski finished the day against the Saints with 225 yards and two touchdowns passing, a 64.5 completion percentage and no interceptions. Sure we were all sold.

What I’m trying to say, is do not get your hopes up ‘too’ high on McCown. But I’m not going to lie, he has shown flashes of potential in other games where he had to come in. I honestly think McCown can be a starter. BUT im pulling for Josh Johnson. That would be awsome. Griese…o gosh….he should have been cut with the rest of them. As for Freeman, or any other college QB for that matter, i don’t think even if we drafted one this year, that they would start. Oh well, that’s just me.

GO BUCS, AND GOOD LUCK TO JOSH JOHNSON AND LUKE MCCOWN…DING DING DING!

i think you nailed it

with the drafting of ‘X’ will not start anyway… I don’t see how they could. I would hope that JJ, Luke, and Brian have been studying Jags playbook since he came aboard, which would catapult them above any QB we would look to draft… anything could happen though, as even though the competition is open, Jags and Company arent tied to any of the QB’s currently on roster. It will be interesting to see who they decide to go with…

gruden

we might as well have gruden back if they are going to throw the qb situation up to an open compettition. i would rather suffer under a long term solution than have brian griese try to manage the situation until maybe next year we get a qb. if its luke than name luke, give him the support. griese should be shipped away, he’s useless, im not buying the veteran qb standard line from the front office. there are plenty of other veteran qbs that are better than brian griese.

If Raheem wants to emulate Tomlin by getting a veteran defensive coordinator, an innovative offensive cooridnator thats a fantastic plan but he needs to remember the final reason for all of Tomlin’s success: that’s right Big Ben! If Raheem doesn’t have that, then he has nothing but a dismal season ahead of him and a lot of irate fans. I hope Raheem succeeds, but he needs to be aware.

by LABUC22 on Mar 23, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i'm sure he's aware of the

pressure that’s on him, but i would hope the fan base is ready to grow with him a bit. Anything better than 8-8 this season and i would be ecstatic. They are implementing new systems on both sides of the ball, etc etc. A ton of changes.

To me, I’d rather see a competition than out right name a guy ‘The Man’ …. I would hate for McCown to enter camp thinking he’s owed something or worse yet the other QB’s coming in thinking there’s nothing to strive for…. I think Griese is here to mentor, I’d even go so far as to say something went extremely wrong if he were the starter right out of the gate…..

proposal to jscott

you make some good points jscott but i don’t have a problem naming mccown number one on the depth chart unitl someone knocks him off. nothing is handed to him, but give him the vote of confidence going in and if he doesn’t outperform the others, than so be it. it’s a business. as far as griese being a mentor i understand but id rather have jags mentor the qbs and jettison griese (get rid of remnants of gruden). as far as josh johnson, i think we have to ask would jags, raheem, and mark have drafted him if it had been their choice last year? im speculating but i think they wouldnt have. so where does that leave us? luke mccown and then this scenario which i think the bucs have to consider if they want the fan base to support them:

A suggestion to Mark Dominik:

Trade for Cleveland’s fifth pick in the first round. Offer to them our pick at 19, and whatever else will get the team up to the fifth pick overall. Cleveland wants to trade down from the fifth pick overall from what I’ve read, so I think the 19th pick overall will look good to them. We’ll have to give up a second round next year or maybe a third that can lead to a second. Regardless, at the fifth pick overall the Bucs are in the driver’s seat.

Let me explain: Offer the Broncos the fifth pick for Jay Cutler and now the Broncos can get their quarterback of the future having bungled the Cutler mess beyond repair. I think Stafford will be there for them if they want him at #5. All of the analysts say we don’t have a qb to offer the Broncos which might make it difficult to make a trade with us without involving a third team. Three way deals are disastrous affairs, as we have already seen. This move keeps us dealing just with the Broncos once we’ve secured the pick from the Browns.

If the Broncos want nothing to do with trading Cutler, all is not lost. I’m not convinced that the Lions want Stafford at #1. They seem to be leaning towards an OT. With that, Stafford drops to us at #5 since the teams at 2,3,4 really arent in the market for a QB as far as I can tell.

Okay, so the Lions throw a curveball and pick Stafford at #1, then we still can take Sanchez. Not sold on Sanchez? Okay, take Crabtree, maybe Curry, or Raji with the fifth pick. Either way you get an elite athlete with the pick while satisfying the fan base with a real effort at getting Cutler or Stafford. Its a win win situation all around. The Bucs have been playing catch up the entire free agency period, here is a real chance to make a mark on the league and get the fans excited. That is really what its all about in the long run. what are your thoughts?

by LABUC22 on Mar 23, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

here's my thing

with McCown, i just don’t think naming him the starter would provide him with a true sense of security or confidence like you say. He knows this is going to be a true competition and he also knows the team is actively searching for better signal callers leading all the way up to the draft. So I don’t see the benefit in naming a starter now. At best it provides a superficial confidence that i feel Luke is smart enough not to need…

Brian Griese, man I’ve done a complete 180’ on this guy. In his first term here i wanted him to get injured just so Simms could play and that happened, but Simms could never stay healthy enough to ward off Griese. Now in his second term I’ve grown to respect the guy. Sure he’s the same old Griese who throws game breaking interceptions, but at the same time this guy finds a way to put a ‘W’ in the win column. His play is ugly, i like to call it the dink and dunk, but at the end of the day he is calm in the pocket, which allows the O-line to do what they do and he gets results. With that said, we are in full rebuild mode so if they cut him like you suggest while receiving their mentorship from Jags, I’m fine with it…

As for the trade scenario, another Cutler trade scenario, ugh… just kidding.. I want this guy as bad as the majority of you despite his win-loss record and ability to throw picks, he can flat out play and surrounded with a good defense would help elevate his game in my humble opinion. The trade sounds good to me, except we’re giving up a 2nd or 3rd rounder next season. Then what other pick are we giving to the Broncos for Cutler’s services on top of Stafford? We’ve already committed a 5th rounder next season in the Kellen Winslow trade. So we could essentially give up our 2nd, 3rd, and 5th rounder in next seasons draft. To be honest I’m fine with that considering it would net us our 1st EVER Franchise QB, I’m not sure Raheem and Dominik would be though, or fellow Buc ’Em contributer UNFNOLE, ha!

If I were to bet, i would bet the Broncos hold on to Cutler, there isn’t a team in the league that can offer a QB with the same assets Cutler provides. Cassel was the dream scenario for the Broncos new G.M. What keeps this trade scenario alive is the Broncos potentially having to put up with a malcontent at the most important position for the next two years….

i hear the Lions are close to a contract agreement with OT Jason Smith… If they pass on Stafford that throws a wrench into the system… For a draft that isnt expected to be very deep, that first round is going to be incredibly compelling.. I’m of the mindset of trading back and accumulating picks, but moving up to the 5th to grab Cutler would be nice… I’d be honest if we got stood up and had to settle for 2nd best in Sanchez or Raji. I couldnt imagine trading up for a DT…. it could happen though

griese and whatnot

jscott, im sorry i don’t think griese will ever get my vote of confidence. in the pivotal atlanta game he drops back to pass, gets flushed runs back even further and gets sacked. thats when i knew the bucs season was over. he does find ways to win at times, but his decision making process in my mind is questionable. he’s short, and cant throw the deep ball.

anyways, i digress, griese always gets me riled up.sorry.

i have no problem giving up those picks, maybe you just give up our 1st round this year and a second rounder that could elevate to a first if the team finishes with 10 wins or something. im not worried about giving up picks, the team is so far under the cap they can pick up some talent through free agency. generally i am against this philosophy but in the bucs case they are so far under the cap i dont think its a big deal.

in regards to my proposal, sorry another cutler trade scenario, i see it as an opportunity for the bucs to obtain some exciting talent rather than getting cutler. it allows dominik to save face with fans and get them excited about the future. currently, i dont know what the front office is doing. i dont think they have a coherent plan for the future of the bucs. they were outmanuvered throughout free agency. I feel like the whole cutler scenario was hatched because they botched haynesworth, vilma, and others. They never contacted the patriots/broncos about cassel/cutler until the last minute when they could have laid the groundwork for the deal that week. the only reason the pats sent cassel to the chiefs was because no other deal was presented until the last minute. what a massive gaff by the front office! if i did my job the way they did theirs, i be fired. its almost as if they didnt have a backup plan in case they didnt get haynesworth.

so, i think trading up just to possible get stafford is worth a shot. if you don’t get him, then take crabtree who would make the offense even more explosive and give mccown even more weapons. i think fans would applaud that effort.

no doubt

i think there is some truth to Dominik not having a sound plan. I think he may have had a very solid plan, especially considering the cuts that were made on the eve of free agency, but i think he grossly underestimated the market. He’s got plenty of experience to avoid being flustered with the rush of Free Agency starting, but i think until you are the trigger man, that rush is not truly felt. Dominik now knows what the NFL off-season is all about as he is ‘The Man’. They did make a push to sign Haynesworth and Vilma, as fans we’ll never know how serious those intentions were, but i think those would have went a long way to getting the fan base excited, they just didn’t pan out

I don’t see the need to appease the fan base for Dominik to make this huge push to acquire Cutler, I think the overwhelming majority of this fan base has already concluded that the Bucs have no shot of acquiring the Broncos Pro Bowl QB. That it was a once in a lifetime shot when Cassel was involved in the trade. With the new regime there has to be and i think there is a grace period that’s already formed. That’s not to say they can do no wrong, as cutting Brooks was like dumping a family member, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt prior to camp ever starting considering the staff they have put together and the personnel they have been rumored to be interested in…

At this point, I could buy a scenario in which the Bucs, trade up, stand pat, or trade down; that’s how undetermined this draft is this year… You make a good trade scenario

wow...

eventually, everything will fall in place. april is SO close now i can almost smell it lol. But yea hopefully JJ is the man, if not, i don’t have a ‘big’ problem with McCown being starter. LET THE PRESEASON BEGIN ;)

It seems the Josh Johnson fan-base is growing. I thought i was the only one haha. Hopefully the Bucs fanbase will grow too. For the eight years i’ve watched as a true Bucs fan, i was forcefed passes into the flats, small 2-3yd slants, and horrible draw plays on 3rd and long. Not to mention probably close to 1,000 quarterbacks take helm behind ‘center’ stage. We finally have players that can be mentioned across the league…but on OFFENSE…wow never thought this day would come. K2, Antonio Bryant, Derrick Ward…we have potential. If only the defense were credited…Derrick Brooks never made it in the highlights. Ronde Barber never made it in the highlights…it was only the Superbowl Bucs that made the highlights. Hardly anyone noticed Jermaine Phillip’s huge 2007 season, Barret Ruud’s success or Tanard Jackson’s emergence. Let’s help those guys out and make some noise for that D! now im just blabbing…point is, i hope we are recognized as a better team next year. I cannot remember the last time we were picked to win the NFC South. Heck even the Falcons are getting votes for that, with us coming in dead last. Lets hope Josh Johnson, or Luke McCown can get us some consistency and to the next level!

Dang..

you guys have alot to say on this. i’m just going to make mine simple and sweet. i can’t wait to hear who starts for us. hoping more For JJ so we can build the team around him. But then again Luke is ok in my book to. even though Brian Greise Did good for us(Occasionally) i really wouldn’t want him to start because of his age. i know that sounds bad but i simple just want a young QB. :)

by Maxumas on Mar 24, 2009 4:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

right on

i think we all feel that way right about now haha Gruden had a fetish with old quarterbacks, while we watched Palmer, Brady, and the Manning brothers thrive as the faces of their franchises. We have yet to see that. Chris Simms came real close to that status, then the injury bug came along. It’d be real nice seeing a young guy behind center. GO BUCS! ;)

Starting QB

As a fan since the so called,“Yucks” years, for the past few seasons I have been pulling for Luke to be our starter. Since the first time I saw him play I saw the ability in him that one needs to be a very successful QB in this league. I have felt for years that if given a fair opportunity he could become someone great. I am glad to hear that the position is open to competition. J.J. does have a good record from the college level but he did not play in the big college games so he probably isn’t ready for the pressures of the big games although he seems talented and as for Brian, well, We know his past record shows that he has always struggled to get and keep the starter position.

JJ

i believe JJ will put up a good fight for the QB position, After all last year he was Holding the clipboard all year long studying. i think he might have his mind set right as of now, But the question is is he physically ready?
