Sunday Morning Linkage: Bucs staying quiet in Cutler talks?
... Sigh... no, not much out there on the Buccaneer front right now, other than the Jay Cutler hoo-ha. The NFL owners' meeting begins today and will offer a breeding ground of insane Cutler rumors and trade opportunities. That said, it doesn't appear to be sunshine and rainbows for the Bucs' chances to land the moody, laser-armed QB. Times writer Rick Stroud is reporting that Mark Dominik hasn't talked with the Broncos since making the initial 3-team offer back in February, which may indicate the Bucs aren't ready to mortgage the future on Cutler. "Many" believe that the asking price is a first this year, a first next year, and possibly a QB on top of that.
Good grief, that's a high asking price for Cutler. No doubt he's a great talent, but come on. Parting with two firsts is insane and two firsts plus a player is even more crazy. First round picks are gold and giving up two is a killer for any team looking to rebuild and fill holes with good, young players. I'd consider a first and a third this year, plus maybe a player, or a maybe a first this year and a third + day two pick next, but not two firsts. The upside for a team willing to pay that ransom is that Cutler still has three more years on his deal, so if the Bucs paid that price, it's not like the Bucs would be getting a Cutler rental for a year or two. However, that high a price is tough for the Bucs based on their current short and long-term roster needs. And yes, I think there's that big a difference between two firsts and a first and a third.
... Stroud also implies the team's re-signing of Flip and move to LB and signing of Crowell to cheap-o deals, along with cutting higher-priced veterans, as a sign that the Bucs are going the pinch-a-penny route rather than the "young" route they've claimed... presuming Crowell and Phillips win starting jobs over the young players Dominik praised in the Brooks' presser.
I don't completely agree on the issue of being cheap based on just these 2 examples. While it appears the Bucs have missed out on some guys they maybe should've money-whipped (aka Jonathan Vilma... dangit!!!), they did reportedly make a $100 million offer to Haynesworth. How much of that money would've been guaranteed, I don't know, but that's a hefty offer. They also overpaid for Clayton and landed the top FA RB in Derrick Ward. Derrick Ward is not a reclamation project like Crowell and an injury-prone player like Phillips... he's a physical bruiser who I hope can carry the load this year if needed to. In other words, the Bucs went out and got a guy that was an attractive option for other teams, rather than a player with injury concerns or a reclamation project that other suitors might have been hesitant towards. That was a very good pickup. Also, we also don't know for sure the reasons some other players looked elsewhere... Houshmandzadeh said he wanted to play for a more established QB and Buchanon said he craved the playing time Detroit could offer him and it wasn't totally about the money.
... NY Daily news Writer Rich Ciminelli would be surprised if the QB-starved Jets would take a flier on QB Josh Freeman at 17, adding the following:
"Scouts tell me he’ll need a couple of years on the bench before he’s mentally ready for the pro game," Cimini writes.
Ugh. Heck to the no. I don't think a boom-or-bust prospect like Freeman (with accuracy problems) is worth the risk. McCown has already been through the learning phase and hopefully is the man, and if not, hopefully Johnson's development will pay off down the line. If the Jets don't take Freeman (TAKE HIM, JETS! TAKE HIM!), pass, please, Dominik.

damn
yeah, i like the thought of cutler in a buc jersey but i don’t like giving up 2 first rounds and a QB…..I say if they arn’t cool with a 1st and 3rd we stay with Mcown and draft an OLB or a DT

Agree with fellow Bucs fans..
lol. As we all would love to have Cutler in a Buc’s jersey. Every day it looks more and more unlikely. But on the brightside it gives us time to develop Johnson and/or Luke mccown can have his time to shine. i believe Luke will be a great starter for us. But, i honestly think IF we were to pick up a QB , i would love to have josh freeman. Quote me on that to. :)

Ehh!!
i see where you are going with this but josh freeman i am not high on!!! reminds of a combination of big ben and garcia? big ben- his elusiveness, and garcia- his pocket presence. I will agree though that he has a hellicopter of an arm. If jags wants this guy, go for it otherwise oh well!!

I meant
that garcia could get out and run to avoid getting sacked (when he felt like it). Sometimes, its good and sometimes its bad!!!

I think many of us do.
There are some that are for drafting him and some against it.

Becuase it not
Listen. Josh Freeman is a great athlete whether you want to admit to it or not. but it will be a mistake to draft him if they don’t fill in the other needed Positions. you thinking picking up Freeman is a mistake then your contradicting your decision on picking Harvin. because picking up Harvin is a bigger mistake then picking up Freeman. QB is a much more needed position then WR.
by Maxumas on Mar 23, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
much more needed position yes but who has more talent harvin or freeman
i stand on the opinion harvin is a way beter athlete than freeman. personally i dont think we need a new QB like ive said before i think our answer for the bucs qb is alredy in our roster. i would be fine with taking a good offensive specialty position if all defensive lineman that are worthy of a first round pick are gone and id be fine with taking a good linebacker too i understand we have needs on defense but if theres no one on the defense thats worth a first round pick (hope we get alphonso smith even though we drafted a CB last year first round and its not one of our immidiate defensive positions to fill id like to see him in a bucs jersey next year) anyways if theres no defensive player worthy of a 1st round pick take someone on offense and whos the better player on offense out of freeman and harvin? whos the bigger playmaker? whos going to make the impact on the team faster and continue to make an impact? i think the answer to all of those questions is percy, scouts say freeman wouldnt be mentally ready for the nfl for at least three years and i wouldnt have confidence in him after those three years learning the nfl anyway

Truefully
I think Josh Freeman Would make a better impact( Can’t really compare two different postions on talent) for whatever team he drafts to. but that’s just my Opinion and i know ALOT of you guys would disagree with me(I heard it all already.lol) So what i’m Saying is We will see who does better at the end of the season and then see who was more talented. My pick being Freeman and yours being Harvin. lol something to look forward to.

we need defensive players.
freeman won’t do anything for a least a couple years. we should aim to get a QB next year and address our once-great defense in the now.
Peria Jerry in pewter would suit me fine…

I suppose I'm in the minority but....
I’m not sure two 1sr Round picks are really out of line for Cutler. Our first round picks haven’t really been worth so much these past few years if my memory serves me correctly. Might be best to take the known commodity vs. the unknown; especially for a young, accurate, laser-armed QB like Cutler.

there's a lot to be said for that
if we have success and next year’s No. 1 ends up in the mid-to-late 20’s… We struggled mightily with the coup we gave up for Gruden. If I’m the Broncos, i don’t see how two number 1’s are going to get it done. Throw in one of our QB’s still and they are still worse off.
I guess any scenario they swing will leave them in a worseoff position than they started aka NO CUTLER..

a proposal
A suggestion to Mark Dominik:
Trade for Cleveland’s fifth pick in the first round. Offer to them our pick at 19, and whatever else will get the team up to the fifth pick overall. Cleveland wants to trade down from the fifth pick overall from what I’ve read, so I think the 19th pick overall will look good to them. We’ll have to give up a second round next year or maybe a third that can lead to a second. Regardless, at the fifth pick overall the Bucs are in the driver’s seat.
Let me explain: Offer the Broncos the fifth pick for Jay Cutler and now the Broncos can get their quarterback of the future having bungled the Cutler mess beyond repair. I think Stafford will be there for them if they want him at #5. All of the analysts say we don’t have a qb to offer the Broncos which might make it difficult to make a trade with us without involving a third team. Three way deals are disastrous affairs, as we have already seen. This move keeps us dealing just with the Broncos once we’ve secured the pick from the Browns.
If the Broncos want nothing to do with trading Cutler, all is not lost. I’m not convinced that the Lions want Stafford at #1. They seem to be leaning towards an OT. With that, Stafford drops to us at #5 since the teams at 2,3,4 really arent in the market for a QB as far as I can tell.
Okay, so the Lions throw a curveball and pick Stafford at #1, then we still can take Sanchez. Not sold on Sanchez? Okay, take Crabtree, maybe Curry, or Raji with the fifth pick. Either way you get an elite athlete with the pick while satisfying the fan base with a real effort at getting Cutler or Stafford. Its a win win situation all around. The Bucs have been playing catch up the entire free agency period, here is a real chance to make a mark on the league and get the fans excited. That is really what its all about in the long run.
