5 Things the Bucs Need to Do This Offseason
1. Make a very competitive offer for WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Yes, I know I said make a competitive offer for Housh, not necessarily sign him. I don't think you offer ANYTHING out there to bring in a player ($100 million for Haynesworth was stupid and anything more would've been really stupid), but with far and away the most cap room, the Bucs should at least match or slightly one-up the best offer he receives (unless completely ludicrious)... really put that "I only want to play for a team with an established QB" to the test. That theory looks even more like a fallacy now, with Housh set to visit both the Bucs and the Vikes... teams certainly without established QBs. Carson Palmer is apparently doing everything short of laying down in front of Housh's car to keep him from leaving town, too. As such, it'll really be interesting to see just how aggressive the Bucs get to try to snare the best free-agent WR on the market. Due to shedding starters and creating so many glaring roster holes, the Bucs will have to address some holes in free agency, as they simply can't part with too many draft picks in the offseason trying to trade for starters. Housh is the kind of player you want to have in any offense: a solid, route-running, deep threat WR. What a compliment he'd be to HR threat Bryant on the other side and pass-catching Kellen Winslow in the middle. Suddenly, the winner of the QB training camp sweepstakes has some potent toys to throw to. That doesn't sound too bad. Quid pro quo... if the Bucs are looking to build long-term, does it make sense to sign a guy like Housh to a team that might not compete for a few years? Might he get ornery like last year? Also, he'll turn 32 during the season... by the time the team turns the corner, could he be too old? Those are questions Dominik will likely ponder before making a major investment in a guy that some don't view as a #1 WR (I think he's borderline, but would become an impact player here). That said, I personally hate it when you don't go after a guy because the team might not be competitive right now. Don't you always have to TRY to field a competitive team and win?
2. Re-sign secondary mates CB Phillip Buchanon and S Jermaine Phillips. You just paid 2.35 mil for one year to backup S Will Allen, so why not get your starters locked down? Dawkins, Atogwe, Gibril Wilson, and Phillips are the best S UFA's this offseason. Dawkins and Wilson (arghh!!) are gone and Rams' S Atogwe will demand probably more money than most would like to pay. Phillips' market should be somewhat tainted by his injury history. I'm not writing off his injury history with that statement, but he's probably the best option out there for the Bucs right now and worth the risk. I'm not ready to go into the season with Sabby starting at SS. I just don't think he's ready for that role. At corner, with Dunta Robinson and Asomugha effectively removed from the market, Buchanon, Jabari Greer, and Chris McAllister remain the best UFA CBs on the market. Greer is a stick to em like glue cover guy. That said, he's coming off a strong campaign in Buffalo and is a relatively hot commodity right now with Buchanon kind of being looked at as the other guy. McAllister is up in years and doesn't jive with the team's youth movement. Get our guys signed.
3. Kick the tires on UFA DT Colin Cole. Come on, Craig T. A backup, fat guy like Cole? As we all know, this team needs a big undertackle. Looking at the free agent options, there are few and far between that meet the type that fits Bates' system. While Cole may not have started last year, he's a robust 6'1 330 and logged some important time in the Packers' DT rotation last year. He might not start in Tampa, depending on who the Bucs acquire, but he should certainly help plug some beef in the middle of that line. He's visiting defensively-challenged Seattle this weekend, so if the Bucs want to bring him in, they need to avoid dragging their feet on this one.
4. Trade down/stockpile picks. This goes without saying, IMO. Due to our mass exodus of starters and role players, the roster looks like swiss cheese. Now without a second-round pick, the Bucs will need to get creative to manufacture some picks, with both starters AND depth now being sought. Unless a can't-miss player is available for the Bucs at 19, they would be very wise to trade down and acquire more day 1 picks. If they trade out of the first round altogether, they should be able to pick up at least 2 first day picks, which would go a long way towards refueling the lineup. Like I said... it all depends who is out there for the Bucs (I'd pull the trigger on Malauga) when they pick because almost every position is a need position now (thus they should be able to help their lineup by trading down, acquiring picks, and still nabbing a good player at most any position).
5. Avoid Kurt Warner and any other stop-gapper/journeyman. Some people around the office are talking about the prospects of chasing Kurt Warner for some reason. Hell to the no. I'm sure our readership here is bright enough to realize the folly that would be without me needing to explain. No way the Bucs should or will sign another aging hipster QB, based on "the plan" or whatever vague term Morris and Dominik call the direction of the team. Clearly, it's time to toss our little boys in the water and teach them to swim. DISCLAIMER: Jay Cutler is not old, nor is he a stop-gapper/journeyman. If he could be had, the Bucs should seriously consider taking a run at him. Depending on whether you believe Adam Schefter or Vic Lombardi, the Broncos are or are not actively shopping him right now.
These are some things that strike me as important. Please feel free to add your suggestions. What else should our braintrust do?

TJ and picks
I’m on the fence with respect to T.J as I think he could be excellent on a three-year deal and make our other wide receivers that much better. However if we do sign him it might hamper any chances (however little they are) that we get a wide receiver in the draft or next year’s FA. And as for draft picks I think we could trade down to late first round or early second round and be able to grab another 2nd/3rd round pick in that deal, that could really help patch some holes.

Great points, KS
I was thinking a 3-4 year deal myself for him. Just because we acquire him doesn’t, or shouldn’t, limit the Bucs’ thinking about drafting WRs. If all of a sudden Jeremy Maclin pops into the picture at 19 (which would floor me if it actually happened), that’d give the Bucs something to think about. You are correct though, WR would become much less of a need position than it would’ve been without TJ.

Im just hoping for a Patriots situation
where if we pick up T.J and a great receiver somewhere, Bryant has another phenomenal year so that way we are blessed with the situation of being able to trade someone for a nice bounty

Precisely. Good point.
Also, it’s not unheard of for a team to have 3 solid, downfield receiving threats. Heck, the Bengals had a trio of Ocho Cinco, TJ, and Chris Henry. If their heads were all screwed on right, imagine how dominant that trio could’ve been (or still could be).

As JScott noted previously,
working out a long-term extension with Barrett Ruud is a priority for this team as well, be it this offseason or during the season.

Do something!
Is this whole league set up to make the Patriots win the Superbowl? From the Randy Moss, Wes Welker, to the Matt Cassell deal. I hate that Cutler deal blew up in our faces. IMO TJ is kinda of slow and that doesn’t jive with the “down field approach” try for some speedy guys i.e. Washington or Henderson. Pls sign Buchanon and/or Greer and Phillips. If you’re going to skip over Phillips get Sean Jones. I’m just soo frustrated with the whole off-season and I know it’s only 3 days in but I guess I was expecting a little more.

Sean Jones is a nice player.
I wouldn’t call TJ slow, but he’s certainly not a hit or miss speedster like Devery Henderson.

Greer and Jones
would be nice additions, if only because they’re considered new blood which is something to get excited about (i.e. yeah! not another re-signing we’re doing something!)

UPDATE
Cincy Jungle is declaring the Bucs to be out of the Housh running due to the contract with Michael Clayton. If the Bucs miss out on Housh due soley to the Michael Clayton deal, I’ll… I’ll…. probably just scoff and piss and moan like a belligerent fool here in my living room. Housh is visiting the Vikes today and reportedly talking numbers. Poo.

If we lose Housh...
…I’ll stick by my first thought that he wants to go to a team that looks more “playoff ready” than us.

Ha-Ha, I second that all the way and trading down in the draft.

here's the remaining guys i'd like to bring in:
S Jermaine Phillips (I don’t think Sabby is ready to play 4 quarters),
CB Bryant McFadden (is the best CB left on the market)
CB Phillip Buchanon (We pretty much have to sign him)
RB Derrick Ward (We lost our 2nd round pick and any shot at a bruising back)
OT Khalif Barnes (He could push Penn and Trueblood and provide depth)
DE Chris Canty (I don’t see any other way for us to upgrade the d-line, thanks Carolina)
WR Lance Moore (I would LOVE to see him in a Bucs uni)
WR Devery Henderson (he has unquestioned speed)
WR Laveranues Coles (he is a guysy player, much like Wayne Chrebet was for the Jets)
QB Rex Grossman (I know everyone hates this guy, who knows though)
S Gerald Sensabaugh (has off the field issues, could be worth a flyer)
DT Shaun Cody (was good in college, has yet to live up to the hype in the nfl)

Even I'm not a Grossman guy...
…but I like the thought of another QB to push McCown. It’s do or die time for McCown and a little competition may push him to actually realize his talent.
(This coming from a guy who traded McCown away the second he started his franchise on Madden…ha!)

I sent him to the Lions...
…for their 3rd and 5th round picks (suckers in my opinion). My first season QB was split between Garcia and Griese and I finished oddly enough 9-7 (sound familiar?). I had the 20th pick in the draft though. Packaged #20, the 3rd-rounder I got from the Lions and my own 4th rounder to move up to #11 and drafted…wait for it…Nate Longshore. I know in real life there’s no way in his wildest dreams Longshore goes #11 overall, but in my video game world, he had a great final year at Cal and had good size and numbers going into the draft. When the game compared him to Big Ben, I was sold and figured why not because I could always take another guy the next year if he bombed. 4 games into the 2009 season and I’m 3-1 and Longshore has a rating around 90. Good to me.

I'm meh on McFadden and definitely not high on Grossman
Ward is a concern to me, even though he has played through some tough injuries the past couple of seasons. I’m not sure he’s ready to carry the load.
Coles could be a good, tough player, even though he’s not a deep ball threat. He could be a nice compliment to Antonio Bryant.
Sensabaugh is a stud. He’s from my hometown, Kingsport, TN, and played for my beloved Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett High School Indians. It’s a small town, but he seems to have an annual return/arrest relationship with the local authorities.
Chris Canty is a prototypical 3-4 end who doesn’t seem to fit into a 4-3 scheme well… except as maybe a rushing 7-technique or run-stuffing DE.

the fatuation with Ward
would be that he wouldnt have to carry the load. Earnest Graham will get plenty of carries this season, as well as Clifton Smith…. i expect Caddy to contribute as well, though i wouldnt be surprised if they cut him should he have any minor setback, which would rub me wrong much like the Brooks releasing.

Agree on Caddy. That would suck.
Generally speaking I’m not sure Ward is a viable featured back. As you aptly point out, the Bucs would likely not utilize him as the featured guy. In a situational setting, Ward would be useful in short ydg and goalline situations, but Graham is already a bowling ball type runner who’d fit that mold. Based on the current lineup, the Bucs desperately need a change of pace/speed back… basically a younger model of Warrick Dunn, IMO.

and just as a caveat
Ward might be a little bit better of a short yardage back than Graham…. he’s certainly a little bit bigger… but not such that I’d seek him out before looking for a change of pace back. Do we have that guy… Is Clifton Smith that change of pace back? Could be interesting to see….

In Ward I Trust
Ward to start with Graham and Smith backing up……trade Williams before the draft to try and get something for him….if possible

Ugh the thought of Grossman makes me want to puke.
He won’t push anybody unless its to get the bench seat closest to the giant misting fan.
I would also consider Ray Lewis a “journeyman” that may sound enticing to the Bucs, but is much of the same thought of Gruallen.
I am so sick to my stomach that Dominik has completely ruined this team for the foreseeable future.
