The Post-Mortem Presser: An Odyssey of Coachspeak and Issue Dodging
via www.cfnews13.com
If you missed the press conference, you can check out the video here. Some low... er, highlights paraphrased below from today's 3:00 presser held by Dominik and Morris:
... Dominik: this is a decision we wanted to make... we've decided to go in a different direction and we've let it be known to those men.
... Morris: I wouldn't be in the position I'm in today if it wasn't for these players.
... D: we believe there are young players on this roster who can step up and play... at will/sam backers, WR (ROFLCOPTER SIGHTING!!!) and RB. We believe there are some capable young men on the roster as we sit here today.
... M: we're not here to speak for Derrick Brooks. What Derrick Brooks feels, Derrick Brooks can do (GRRR!!!! BAD CHOICE OF WORDS, RAHEEM!).
... who will step up? M: We have players in those roles who will have to step up. Barrett Ruud's of the world. They'll have to step up and fill those shoes. You never replace DB, but you give players opps to step up.
... not money, age issue, youth movement, just direction change. Part of plan.
... are we talking scheme problems with these guys? Talking about what the Bucs want to look like.
... June was younger, why him? It's not looking younger, we want to look like our plan. Barber, Hovan not younger, but are part of plan. Guys released are not.
... What's this "plan"? Fast, tough, disciplined team. It's about us moving forward. Let other guys compete.
... D: Saw Brooks start career and has seen every one of his games, made it difficult for him. Took time because it was difficult decision, but they decided at combine they needed to do this.
... Did you ask Brooks about backup role? Why not let him finish as Buc? D: We made decision, for organization. We didn't picture DB wearing a hat on sidelines in a backup role, so we made the decision.
... Did you think about the PR backlash? Hope not viewed that way. Have respect for DB and others. Amazing person and player. Expect him to be a part of Buc family in future.
... Did y'all think he would refuse to retire? Many great players just play, which gives them amazing longevity. Can't speak for Derrick, but it seems hard for players to step away.
... Is this tough for you? M: yes, but they are decisions, made based on moving forward, becoming better. Can't have a problem with making those decisions and will be judged down the road and is willing to accept responsibility for those decisions.
... Can this team be competitive down the road? M: You always want to think you have a competitive team. Plenty of time to build this team up for how they want to look next year. In process of that, FA/Draft around corner.
... Will these moves make the team more talented next year? D: Idea is to improve talent on team. That's direction we're heading. Expect to be explosive football team (HOW???).
... What does future hold? Will you be FA player? D: not here to talk about FA today. Will talk about FA during FA. Here to talk about the 5 men released with 50 yrs experience. It was a decision they needed to make to go in direction they needed to go.
... What do you say to fans who have their doubts? M: fans should doubt. We have to make them believe. That's our job.
... WR and LB... do these moves speak to considerable changes at these positions? When you let go 2 starter LBs, there will be changes. We have 7 LBs under K and 6 WRs under K.
... Did $$$ and no cap in 2010 have anything to do with it? No. (MEDIA LAUGHTER). It's not about creating cap space.
... Talked w/other players about this? M: Called leaders on team and gave them the heads up, let them know our direction and play. They're ready to go, and are excited to have an opportunity to compete, but they weren't excited the 5 guys are being released. Everybody wants to become those 5 guys and look to fill those shoes.
... When talking to grandkids in 50 years, what will you tell them about #55? M: A great person who helped him develop as a Coach. He's an unbelievable man and a role model to us all. Also, would talk about the splash plays he made. The 2002 season. Driving a truck off field after winning player of the year. Talking about a legend. D: He and Sapp created the Tampa 2 and kept it going... a forefather of the Tampa 2.
CRAIG T'S TRANSLATION of said coachspeak... While it's tough on us to make this move (and I believe that), this move was about cutting salary and getting younger. We're going to stock our roster with 2nd tier, affordable free agents and cheaper draftees. We're not going to talk about Free Agency because we really don't have any intention of being players for top tier free agents, so we don't want to hack off our fans on two fronts this afternoon. We are telling you the number of LBs and WRs under contract because we really have no idea who out of that bunch (sans Barrett Ruud) is capable of becoming a playmaker.

Breaking News: This is all a dream. Tomorrow we will all wake up and Derrick Brooks will still be wearing Pewter & Red.
I am still in freaking shock man. I mean, I can understand the rest of the cuts except for maybe Warrick Dunn who totaled 1100 total yards and is a decent 3rd down back. A part of me has lost all respect for the Bucs front office. It’s not just becasue they cut homegrown superstars (ok, well it is kinda), it’s how they do it. No class man. Take John Lynch for example. The guy should have had retired a Buc. It pissed me off to see him make the pro bowl for the Broncos.
This never should have been for Brooks, not like this man. God willing you will retire a Buc and take a position within the organization. You can’t go anywhere else man. Your a Buc forever.

it's a pretty big head scratcher
Warrick Dunn was the most productive RB, Brooks was the second most productive tackler. They were set to make pennies next season compared to others on the roster, McCown $2.5 million, really?
it is what it is though and the manner in which they did it bugs me too. completely classless, but that’s where the fan base shows it’s true colors as a fan base, as we’re constantly reminded this is a business. There is still a way to go about your business in a professional manner, this wasnt it

yea i hate it when franchises focus on putting the best product on the field instead of keeping players based on what they've done in the past!!!
I wont argue that this was possibly done in order to cut payroll, but we dont know for sure yet. Sure, brooks and dunn deserve better… but id rather have a better team. The fact is that most of the guys cut were not playing at a level comparable to their contract, and could be replaced by cheaper players that produce at the same level on the field.

I disagree that Derrick and Warrick were not playing at a comparable level to their contracts.
You think Brooks wasn’t playing to a level of $3 million dollars? Ok. He had one year left on his contract and was second on the team in tackles last season. Some might point to the end of the season as his skills declining, but I don’t think that can be accurately characterized as such. His most ineffective time came in December when the entire defense top to bottom hit the skids. He was playing with a nagging hamstring injury and the defensive line couldn’t prevent holes from opening up. As for Warrick, name me a free agent option out there right now ready to sign that would be a better situational back than Warrick Dunn. Over 1100 all-purpose yards playing in a situation role was huge for the Bucs. If the Bucs are sure Clifton Smith is ready to fill that role, then ok. I hope for their sakes they’re right on all this.
One of my main problems with this is the premature timing. Why not see what the offseason holds? One one hand, I understand wanting to give Derrick, Warrick, and company the opportunity to latch on somewhere else quickly if that was their plan. That said, it’s tough to say that the Bucs are doing better by letting them go and hoping they find somebody that’s an upgrade because it’s unknown who on this roster could be better. We also don’t know who the Bucs will land in free agency or the draft that could improve those positions. Michael Clayton might not be back, so without Hilliard and Galloway, you’ve got a WR corps of Antonio Bryant plus…. Stovall, Clark, Dexter Jackson, Cortez Hankton, and Anthony Mix. You think those guys are any better than Hilliard or a healthy Galloway?
This team was already strapped for depth, and now with these starters and key role players gone, those “depth” guys will be the front line guys. Again, as I’ve stated before, this braintrust had better put together a darned impressive offseason, because they have plenty of holes, not just “shoes”, to fill now.
Cannons... fire them.

yeah i'm not buying that
Roc, respectfully i have to disagree. Brooks #2 in tackles, Cato #3 in a position that didnt fit him and Dunn led the team in rushing yardage, he was the healthiest back we had…
whatever though, it’s water under the bridge now. The fact is these guys are on the back 9 and regardless of the obvious production they have and would have continued to provide they were thrown out…

.
I understand why people are bitter about this but it was going to happen eventually. Props to Morris and Dominik for not being afraid to put axe a few guys in order to put their plan in place. Football is not about catering to players whether or not they are future hall of famers. Football is about winning games. If this is going to help them with their plan on how they think games are won, then so be it. BUT DB you will be missed!
P.S. I think this sends a strong message to younger players competing for jobs. If theyre willing to cut arguably the best Buc of all time, you better work your butt off because they are certainly not afraid of cutting you.

the argument is that these guys
are/were/still can be productive… this is like beating a dead horse though so i’ll succumb to it

Wait....what????
We want a Fast, Tough Disciplined team?
So…Derrick Brooks is slow, soft and out of control? In fact I think he is defined as a linebacker as Fast and Disciplined?
Ronder Barber IS A PART OF THE PLAN??? He is not fast, tough, NOR disciplined. He has instincts which have carried him through a large part of his career.
They better have a plan in place. Or there is going to be a lot of people jumping off the Pirate Ship. Goodbye season ticket sales.

I've got to say..
I’m entirely disgusted with this entire thing, where is this explosive football team he is talking about? This Bucs team wouldn’t know explosive if it laid them flat and then sexually abused them, this doesn’t increase their explosiveness, more than likely it will just be the start of the implosion. Our second and third string players are second and third stringers for a reason and if you don’t plan to replace some of these corner stones with some heavy spending in FA and some major draft deals, then its going to be a few years before its even worth waking up on Sundays for fans. I have to wonder what WRs he is talking about? Maybe he got his wires crossed and thinks he’s coaching the Cardinals or something
You cut your leaders and then expect the troops to march to your tune? I don’t think so. I can understand several of the cuts, but unless they do something major, and I mean epically major, this may be one of the most painful seasons of Bucs football in recent memory.
It had to happen at some point, but watching the figurative wrecking ball taking apart our beloved Buccaneers is no less painful.

not to mention for a team that lacked depth
a versatile rb and highly productive lb for $3 million each for a team with over $50 million in cap space is just asinine.
