BREAKING NEWS: Bucs Release Derrick Brooks and 4 others... In Related News, My Heart Just Exploded

Hat tip to TheSportsGuru for bringing this to everyone's attention a few minutes ago.  Per the Tribune, the Buccaneers cut 5 of their seasoned vets today: Derrick Brooks, Joey Galloway, Ike Hilliard, Cato June, and Warrick Dunn.  Folks, as you know, these are not dead wood backups they're cutting... they're guys who were either starters last year or were projected starters in the fall.  The Bucs could bring any of the above back later this offseason, but cutting Brooks is like a kick to the groin for me.  It appears the youth movement is on.  I'm pretty much speechless right now.  GM Mark Dominik will address the media later today.  For those of you in the Tampa area, if you are not in gridlock, I invite you to tune in to AM-620 for an explanation.. I still can't believe it... wonder if Brooks had an injury issue that's been kept on the downlow.  More as we hear it...

Added by JScott.

Our Tampa Bay Buccaneers have RELEASED LB Derrick BROOKS, RB Warrick DUNN, WR Joey GALLOWAY, WR Ike HILLIARD, and LB Cato JUNE

Let that sink in for a little bit… Oh it still hurts… Nope it still hurts; oh my goodness the pain is so deep! Console me Dominik:

"We want to give our younger guys a chance to play,'' General Manager Mark Dominik - St. Pete Times

Oh that’s not helping Mark! I just want to run around the office screaming!!! Didn’t we suffer last season due to depth issues? Our guys wore down at the end of the season. Specifically the DEFENSE? Isn’t that the case? I’m not delusional in this thought process am I? If not, how is releasing our starters, OUR STARTERS, going to help improve this team? Let me stop…

  • Derrick Brooks: You are hands down the Greatest Buccaneer in this franchises history, we all think so. You deserved better than this and for that I am deeply sorry. All those years you restructured your contract and this is how it ends… Sweet Heavens don’t hate us for it.
  • Warrick Dunn: Last season you provided over 1100 yards of offense; why that warrants you getting cut is beyond me, but it is what it is. You are the reason I became a Bucs Fan. Our locker room and community will miss your character AND I will miss all of those patented spin moves.
  • Joey Galloway: What the heck happened? You went from flashing that bicep year after year in Ray Jay to completely vanishing last season to being cut this off-season. Man, my head is spinning. Here’s to you landing on your feet and one day letting the fan base in on what you endured this past season.
  • Ike Hilliard: I’m not going to lie, I disliked you coming to town early on. You’re a former Gator and quite frankly I thought we could do better. Over the last two seasons you won me over though. You were the only guarantee on offense to make that sorely needed catch. As it is I hate to see you go.
  • Cato June: We barely knew thee. Of the players that were shown the door today, your release probably confuses me the most. #1 You were brought in to play a position you hadn’t had previous success at. #2 We all assumed you would take over for Derrick Brooks when he called it quits on his own terms. #3 You are relatively young. I have to say I feel like we never got to see the true Cato as you played out of position the entire time you were here. Thanks for your time and efforts…
  • What a buzz saw. On one hand I understand these cuts as all of the players above with the exception of June were on the downside of their careers. To me Derrick Brooks transcended the franchise though. I know everyone is going to say his play suffered last season, but this is Derrick Brooks we’re talking about. He had one year left on his contract any way; why not let that chapter end next off-season? Why be so brash? So you can let the younger guys play? Who? Geno Hayes? Quincy Black? Are you serious? You think they are ready? Obviously you do and so I’ll defer to you as I’m just a fan, but this hurts.

How do you replace this many players with one draft?

Now there’s an absurd amount of cap room. I hope they’re not trying the Rays’ “ball on a budget” approach.

    i love it

“ball on a budget” ….. looks like they will attempt it.. I could understand if the fellas filling in showed something last season, but they never did. Hayes was even hurt half the year…

the only problem here is that brooks deserves better

but after the initial shock, i think cutting these guys make sense

    especially when you figure

Dunn and Brooks had another year in them, but to let them go like this when they would have at the very least provided adequate depth that we sorely needed last season… eh

    From A Football Fan's Perspective...

This is more than a team cutting 5 starters. Hell, the Broncos did that earlier this year.

The shock is a couple of these guys are LEGENDS in Buccaneers history. Doesn’t Derrick Brooks deserve more than to be part of a press release with Ike Hilliard??

    Dang! Dang! Dang!

Not only are they cutting valuable starters, but the LEADERS of this team! Wow….I too just experienced a heart attack.

Cato June, Derrick Brooks and Ike Hillard don’t make sense. Galloway and Dunn I can understand. This completely changes free agency and the draft. Wow….I am also speechless.

Brooks DOES deserve better. Maybe Raheem will make him part of our staff? NO? Dangit.

    lol

i don’t think Brooks joins the staff just yet… Dunn and Brooks were set to make $3 million each next season, even if they didnt play full time, their presence alone would pay dividends. Plus Warrick was our healthiest back last season

    Confused...

Why would they need the draft to replace a 3rd string RB, a linebacker that was retiring soon anyway, a WR that hasn’t contributed in two seasons…etc etc etc.

Nobody deserves a spot and 3 million a year just because of what they used to do.

Brooks should become the linebacker coach.

Cato June has been basically a failure since they got him. Ike is not the answer.

    Now…go get TJ Hoosyamamma.

by jimpryor99 on Feb 25, 2009 1:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They won't land Housh or Boldin IMO.

June isn’t much of a failure, but a situational backer and a valuable depth guy (which is why he was brought in).
Brooks SHOULD become a coach, but both he and Dunn will be picked up on a 1 yr deal somewhere, unless they choose to retire.

Also…again, it is about what they contribute talent level, but with a rookie head coach veteren leadership from character guys is HUGELY important.

Brooks was second on the team in tackles

Cato was third and Dunn had over 1100 yards while Ike was out most consistent receiver. The Bucs will overcome this, but for a team with little to no depth this doesnt make much sense when saving $6 million for the combined salaries of Brooks/Dunn

    I don't know what say

For all the Bucs fans out there, this is a sad day. I can’t say that I don’t agree with some of them (June, Galloway) but Ike Hilliard has played his role and Warrick Dunn is the kind of guy any team wants and basically carried the run game last year. As for Brooks, what in the hell kind of $#$#$#$@#*&… Sorry, but this is a huge mistake. Are we shunning people for wanting to stay with our team when we treat THE BEST PLAYER THE BUCS HAVE EVER HAD with a pat on the butt and a “don’t let the door hit you on the way out!”.

I’m gonna have to chill out for a while so my head doesn’t explode.

by LinuxTX on Feb 25, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

    it was pretty mind numbing

when it was initially reported. My head is still spinning a bit. I really have to excuse for why they released Dunn and Brooks other than monetary purposes

Dunn was first in rushing yardage, third in receiving yardage AND Brooks was second in tackles on the team, they were both set to make $3 million each, that’’s nothing

Hilliard has been our only consistent receiver (up until Bryant), but at $3.5 million i can see why they would let him go. I guess with Cato they looked at the tape, especially the last four games and figured he didnt fit with the direction of the team

Galloway, i dont know what to say there… he was set to make $2 million and is completely healthy/rested. He did receive preferential treatment from Gruden so maybe the new staff didnt want to deal with that…

    Crap.....

The more I think about this the more I am deathly afraid of next season. Not only are we losing depth, valuable leadership and our community activist prototypes, we could also miserbly FAIL in this offseason.

What is going to say about Dominik if we DON’T get one of these high profile Free Agents? Housh, Boldin, Haynesworth, Peppers (kinda), etc. We have so much cap space, that not signing one of these would be a failure of monumentous proportions. We have room to be aggresive in the draft now, but the draft brings in more unproven talent.

How do we not let go of Griese but let go of Derrick Brooks? Can someone explain that. I would have been more ok with giving the pink slip to Barber than Brooks.

Morris could be a one year deal if we don’t do something BIG this offseason.

"I have come that you may have life, and life to the max"

by UNFNOLE on Feb 25, 2009 2:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

    i dont know man

should the Bucs bring in guys just because they have the cap. I know you’re not reiterating that, but outside of Haynesworth the other upgrades will be hard to attain. Boldin via trade would costs draft picks (unlikely), Houshmandzadeh wants to play for a team with a solid QB, that doesnt bode well for Tampa…

For depth issues alone i don’t understand why they let Brooks go, Dunn as well

the worst part in all of this

is that WD and DB were ultra productive for this team last season. They probably have the best work ethics on the team and they are shown the door. They are the consummate professionals and would have received a lack of playing time well. Hell Brooks was already getting transitioned out last season. insanity

    I think Dominik

has youth he can work with in Black and Hayes. I really do believe that. However….can’t we let them play and still keept Brooks and Dunn. I think Hillard confuses me the most though. The guy has been solid and one of the best 3rd down options we have had. He made me so angry dropping that pass in the playoffs but has since shown consistency and a great 3rd receiver option. None of these guys are expensive (outside of Brooks and Galloway). Brooks has one more year though and the buyout is going to be costly as well.

What a terrible day. In the long run, if we can make some moves this offseason, I am for it. Short term, Dominik makes me want to throw my laptop out the window.

Talk about a punch in the gut. I’m fine with cutting Galloway but Hillard was a good possession Receiver, June is still young, Dunn surprised me last year with how good he was, and Brooks has lost a step sure but is still one of the best OLBs in the game still. The Tampa-2 is dead and era is over.

I'd rather just go to 3-4 if we're making a change

Losing the Tampa-2 is like having a member of the family die. It’s run it’s course I’m afraid though. The Tampa-2 and the 3-4 have dominated the league for the last decade, and teams know how to beat it now. But I wouldn’t mind having a blitzing 3-4 for a change, it’s the only other defensive scheme I respect.

Just paid the first Installment on My season Ticket Invoice last week.

I am so muther effing pissed right now I can’t see straight. I have been watching DB since I was eight years old as I am a huge FSU fan too. I would love to see DB become the Linebackers coach at FSU.

I will still continue to do the chant from the United Way commercial ….

WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE PLAYER …. DERRICK DERRICK.

Does anyone know where I can get a Bucs tatoo removed in a rather inexpensive manner? Derrick didn’t deserve this. The Raheem Morris and Mark Dominic era is off to one helluva start.

    lol

it sucks that they did this after the deadline to renew your tickets, pretty shiesty….

What would you do if.. Clayton?

Resigned today for a large contract?

I sure hope there is no connection.

My last thought… why release June? I’m sure you can get some kind of draft pick for trading him. I can see releasing Galloway, Hilliard, and Dunn (sadly).. but y release June. It’d be smarter to just look for some kind of trade.

by miracles83 on Feb 25, 2009 3:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That and couldn't June just slide into Brooks position?

At least that’s what they’ve been saying for a while now.

    Lots of Questions

With the Cap room the Bucs have there is no money explanation for these moves. They must have $50m now?!? Cutting Joey and Ike makes some sense, clean out the vets and make the young guys like Stovall step up. I see cutting Dunn as sign they will draft a back in the 2nd or 3rd. Dunn stablized the position for them last year, this year has as many or more questions with both Caddy, Ernie hurt. I feel you go with those 3 one more year unless there is preseason health issues. June got a raw deal last year, and you have to think that Morris and Bates didn’t see him fitting any better this season, so good luck to him. Brooks makes me want to cry, unless they move up to get Curry or see one of the USC kids fitting and available at 19; WHY? Put depth around him and groom the heir drafted this year or next.

Other than Brooks I get this. But now they need to make BIG moves in the market and draft. Fat Albert scares me, he is either an anchor in a great way or one that sinks the pirate ship. TJ is a nobrainer now, him and Bryant are a nice pair. Cassel as a UFA sounds great but I don’t think he can get to the open market, 2 1sts is too much. The lost depth from the Gruden deal prevented the team from staying on top. Bart Scott to fill Brooks’ spot or maybe Vilma? Greer to replace Buchanon?

Assuming they sign TJ the 19th must be a backer, and they should be able to get at worst the 3rd off the board in a pretty good class. It is now the hole they must fill. A back in the 2nd or better yet the 3rd should be easy.

Wow Brooks is an All-Timer, and will be missed.

    I'll say it again...

…don’t bank on T.J. He has said he wants to go somewhere with a proven QB where he can win right away. Sorry, but at the moment, the Bucs don’t fit that bill. I’m sure he’s on the radar, but he might not want to come here based on what he’s said. I’d like to get him, but it seems like a long shot at the moment. Of course, this is definitely one situation where I’d love to be wrong about this.

    and we thought the

bucs were hard to figure in terms of their draft direction, now everything is open: DLine, LBs, DBs, RBs, QBs…

i wouldnt mind seeing them grab Brian Cushing if he should drop to us, he would provide depth at the very least, lol, oh man…

    Construct a roster

Yesterday I would have been satisfied if the Bucs drafted Peria Jerry with the first round pick because DT was definitely out biggest need, now I’m not so sure. Now they just need to go with best player available period, there are too many holes to fill now to go with a need pick. DT isn’t the deepest position in the draft, Jerry is a reach at 19. Go with Wells, Moreno, Maclin, or even Sanchez somebody that could make a big impact. If we go with need trade down because we need alot more picks for that.

by atlantaray on Feb 25, 2009 4:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

    Agree!!

This changes how they need to look at Free Agency and the Draft. We just opened up 2 more immediate needs.

    YEP.

Now there are so many freaking holes to fill, it’s insane. The Bucs have to seriously consider stockpiling picks in this draft.

    Cannons... fire them.

    this is just insane

i see theyre trying to make us younger and go with a different plan as we can all see we now have right around 60 million under the salary all i know is if this was gruden and allen and they just made all these cuts and they were still borderline for keeping there jobs everybody would want there heads on a red and pewter platter DB dosent deserve that kind of disrespect

dosent anyone find it ironic that

the salary we got from the five players we just cut equals out to the price we payed for bryants tag?

    WHAT THE FRUCK?

I go to work and come home and come home to THIS SHIT? Personally, I can say Bon Voyage to the rest of them, but Derrick Brooks? Warrick Dunn? You can’t be serious. To say you want to put “younger” players on the field is one thing, but these guys are freakin icons! To let them go out on there own terms is the only way it should have been.

I hope you don’t acquire anybody worth a crap, and/or be the "surprise" team of 09. I hope you buc yourself again and get Albert Haynesworth. Then in training camp he murders someone, then steps on their head and you are stuck with nothing. But hey I’m a little biased.

Enjoy kicking us while we are down. We are starting a long (in my opinion) overdue rebuilding process and I think it’s likely to be a bit painful for the next year or two.

Once we are back in a year or two we will look you guys up. You’ll be at that same old place the Saints occupy….. the corner of Over Hyped Street and Failure to Live Up to Expectations Blvd.

I hate seeing Brooks, Galloway Dunn and to a lesser extent Hillard near the end of the line. Parting with these guys, infusing the roster with young talent and (hopefully) finally finding and settling on a young QB is the only way we are going to break the cycle of mediocre seasons.

The next two seasons likely will be painful, but I’ll take a year or two of 10 loss seasons if it means we have a roster that can challenge for a title for five or six years. To me that a much better alternative than going 7-9 to 9-7 every year.
That is what we were looking at had we kept Gruden and continuted to sign free agents that belonged to AARP.

    honestly

I am enjoying the kicking. However, the way the NFL plays out these days, look at us in 06, ATL last year. You a-holes could win 11 next year. I really doubt it, but the point being that as long as the overhaul is done correctly and follow certain principles, then you will probably end up all right.

and P.S. you got the wrong address. We’re on False Hope Ln and Blind Faith Ct.

good news is we are moving down South Champ Pkwy to Superbowl Pl.

    looking forward to 2010

I know its a business but come on...

One word….“classless”, Is this how you reward the best player to ever put on a Bucs Jersey? D.Brooks deserves better, its ashamed it went down like that. I came home yesterday from class having a pretty decent day, did my daily routine…grab some lunch and put on Sportcenter. They started saying something about “some team cleaning house and rebuilding”, here I am think it the Seahawks, 49ers or some other team, then she says “Thee Tampa Bay Bucs” drop Derrick Brooks, Cato June, Warrick Dunn, Joey Galloway and Ike Hillard….I almost kicked the cat, I was so pissed. D.Brooks is a Hall of Famers, who got was in Hawaii like 2-3 weeks ago, are you kidding me. I know these coaches have new schemes but you do not just start cutting the face of the organization. I was one of those poeple who expect Derrick Brooks and Ronde Barber to retire Bucs. Junebug was not the best linebacker (sometimes a hothead) but I like the way he played for the short time he was here. Who do we have to play these positions? Why would you just drop a player without any back up? That is like the Packers dropping Favre without having Rodgers ready to go…No-sense or Nonsense. I love the “bicep flex” but Galloway seems to have forgotten the route to the “fountain of youth”, he couldn’t get on the field, so his release was expected (I will miss the old man burning Gamble,McKenzie, etc. Good Luck Joey) Ike Hillard has been all right in his time in Tampa Bay, hope he fines work somewhere else. Warrick Dunn’s release was surpising but kind of expected, one of the best guys in the NFL (If anyone has not read his book it’s amazing, “Running For My Life”) Dunn will definately fine another team, because he has about 2-3 years left. If you go to www.buccaneers.com, 3 out of 6 of those players on the top of the site are gone. I just hope we know what we are doing, with all this space we better get a TJ Houshyourmama or Haynesworth. Go Bucs!!!
