Buccaneers to Sign Recently Released Jets TE Chris Baker?
Posted on behalf of JScott.
For those of you eager to see TE Jerramy Stevens ride off into the sunset, you may get your wish. Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune opines recently released TE Chris Baker formerly of the New York Jets as a potential replacement for Stevens. He’s not as big as Stevens, but Stevens never played as big as he was anyway, if that makes sense. Baker caught 72 balls for 709 yards and seven touchdowns from ’06 to ’07 and was told he was going to get a contract extension. That didn’t happen in ’08 and his production slipped. Honestly they should convert Clayton into a Tight End, he has just as much size as Chris Baker...

I like Baker...
but I also like Alex Smith.
Stevens isn’t a FA is he?

Jerramy Stevens
Ok so you say he doesn’t play as big as he is. Did you forget the game winning touchdown catch in New Orleans. were he caught the ball were only a 6 foot 7 guy could catch it. Or what about this past year during the Vikings game i think it was third and 30 and guesse who made that play. Yup your right Jerramy Stevens did. Hes a playmaking tight end that can catch and make huge playes when needed for us. I like the guy. Plus we already have a tight end like Baker in Alex Smith and I think Smith has way more upside then Baker.

fair enough
two play making catches though? Over a 16 game season? He had two touchdowns for a team that struggled mightily in the red zone… Not that Chris Baker would cure that illness as he didnt catch a touchdown pass period last season. there goes that argument, ha…

.
Honestly I would rather have Stevens back as he can stretch the field better than Baker and Alex Smith. We already have Gilmore who might be the best blocking TE in the league, and a guy with similar skill set to Smith just isn’t needed. Getting Ben Troupe back would be a better sign than this, not to mention much cheaper.

Uh, Chris who? Thanks but no thanks.....
Servicable numbers in the past, but I’ll pass. And I’d keep Stevens too. Number 1, he has a familiarity with the team and #2, the USF student campus is only 15 minutes from the stadium and HCC is just across the street just in case he wants to get rowdy (I kid, I kid).

lol
i don’t know that the familiarity thing matters much with all of the staff turnover… i was at work when i heard this, with no access to his stats. it appears this would be a wash…

On a lighter note, WR Marvin Harrison may be a free agent soon according to EPSN....

I know he’s old and has had injury problems, but I would take a shot if he would be willing to do what he apparantly is not willing to do in Indy….take a pay cut.

The problem is
I think the only team he is willing to take a pay cut for is Philly. He wants WAY TOO much money. Indy is smart for not giving it to him.

i dont know bro
he hasnt had a 1,000 yard season in two years, will be 37 years old when the season starts, and considering the money he would command (like UNF says) he may render us useless in the Haynesworth market if we were to pay him and Bryant $20 million for one season
