Mocking the Draft: Dissecting the #1 NFL Draft Pick

I know you guys are itching to discuss the Draft so let's put together our own Mock Draft for the site. Let's tackle this pick by pick so we don't get ahead of ourselves and/or overwhelmed. We're going to use Mocking the Draft's Mock Draft as our starting point. In this scenario they have the Detroit Lions selecting:

1. Detroit Lions
Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia: With five picks in the first three rounds, the Lions can take Stafford with the No. 1 pick and build the line later in the draft. Starting offensive tackles are much more readily available in this draft than quarterbacks, so Detroit can still pick up a tackle later.

When making your case for the Detroit Lions #1 Pick keep in mind that the fan base from Pride of Detroit, SBNation's Detroit Lions Blog, collectively (80% to 20%) would like to see the Lions use the pick on a position other than Quarterback. Alright so let's hear it...

Pride of Detroit’s fans well wishes, in my opinion they should select QB Matt Stafford from the University of Georgia. The guy is considered the BEST QB in this year’s NFL Draft. The Lions currently have:

Daunte Culpepper
Drew Henson
Jon Kitna
Dan Orlovsky
Drew Stanton

on their roster. And we thought we liked to stockpile QB’s sheesh. It’s been rumored that Jon ‘I suck’ Kitna would be released soon, so Daunte Culpepper would be the bright spot in their QB corps. I know a lot of teams want to wait until next season to get their Franchise QB (Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow), but Stafford is a good QB and worthy of a Top 5 Pick this season. Couple that with the Lions owning two first round picks (#1 & #20) I iwould suggest they get their Franchise QB and look to the offensive line with that 20th pick….

Who disagrees?

I can see why Detroit would feel the way they do though. Why would you invest first pick money into a guy you aren’t really sure A) you can protect and B) is a franchise-worthy quarterback. There is still a lot of questions about Stafford…he’s no Matt Ryan. I think when you decide to invest that money, you want to have other pieces in place to make the transition seamless.

However, I agree with you. There is no promise in tomorrow. There is no “future sure thing” at quarterback even though McCoy looks promising. When you have this pick, you need to do what’s in the best interest for the franchise. Stafford IS GOOD and will be productive on an offense that has a lot of skill positions around (Johnson and Jones)

he's no matt ryan?

why do people say this? Matt Ryan wasn’t Matt Ryan either before he blew away all but the loftiest expectations last year…. there were so many fans that called overrated and bust on Ryan but he breaks out and its ‘oh yeah, i knew it all along’ . There were questions about Ryan as well, we simply choose to forget that in the face of his success as a rookie QB.

Personally, I’d dump Kitna, Stanton and Henson, keep Culpepper, Orlovsky and draft Stafford at #1 and Oher at #20

ghost that's a bit presumptious

the people that say it are the people that believed in Ryan and knew the potential he possessed. To be honest i was a bit shocked about all of the naysayers last Draft day. I remember the falcoholic’s fan base being a bit dejected. I was pretty shocked. The guy excelled in the ACC with a BC team that in the past was pretty laughable…

Obviously nobody knows for sure how these guys are going to fair in the NFL and Matt Ryan could bomb next season to prove it, but to say we simply chose to forget it is a bit unfair….

Perhaps...

I’m just saying that all players, no matter how god-like. have questions coming into the NFL and that they can’t become the ‘next’ Matt Ryan until they’ve actually played a pro season. I’m not saying UNFHOLE is an end of season draft ‘expert’ or anyone is on this board for that matter, but success and failure have a habit of skewing a persons recollection.

no doubt

that end to that would be giving any said player the shot to prove oneself…

Going with Stafford

Initially, I wanted to see Detroit grab an OT like Oher, but as time has gone on I think they have to take Stafford here. With four other picks in the first three rounds they can address some of their other needs (and their are plenty). Stafford could end up having a Matt Ryan type season or he could end up needing to sit and develop more like Aaron Rodgers did. Either way when this team is ready to start winning, Stafford will be ready to be the QB.

The Best QB in this year's draft

I disagree that Lions should take Stafford with the #1 pick. Even if we lose Orlovski to free agency. There is NO supporting cast, and one year’s worth of drafting and free agency is not enough to build one. With a decent team, the odds are not that great that even a great Rookie QB can succeed. Lions set the record. They are further away from being a decent team than any NFL team in history. Curry, on the other hand, appears to be a can’t miss.

This being said, it scares the heck out of me that Stafford is a possibility. IF THIS HAPPENS, then I hope that the Lions will take best OL at 20. Further, at 33 they should take either Brandon Pettigrew if he’s available, or the best center on the board.

you guys definitely

have a tough decision to make.. do you take a gamble on Stafford? While paying huge money and investing crippling amounts of time, or do you take the safe bet in Curry, but somewhat of a reach?

i definitely don’t envy you guys, if it was the 2010 Draft i would be drooling with envy

i still say take the QB and draft an OL with the 2nd #1 pick…
