Should Raheem Morris go? These last three games may be the report cards biggest entry.
It's an age old question, just one we can not believe we are asking already after only one season. In this article, we will look at the Pros and Cons Of Raheem Morris and his first season at the helm.
Mark Dominik is the second youngest GM in the NFL, but Dominik has developed a reputation as a good talent scout, and several teams were interested in him as a GM. He is the longest tenured Buccaneer, as he was hired in 1995, and promoted MANY times. We are going to give Dominik a pass. He will go into 2010 on the auto Hot Seat, as will Morris should we vote for him to return.
Executive Decisions: We have come to find out recently through many outlets, that the Glazers actually had a bigger hand in the hiring of Jeff Jagodzinski and Jim Bates than we thought. The Glazers did not want their young rookie coach to be without experienced talent around him. Yet Jags was fired 10 days before the season even started, and the Jim Bates experiement ended before the season did. The fallout from these mistakes is serious..
1) Ryan Sims was terible on the line last year, but he was thought to compliment Bates system. He was resigned.
2) The playbook is a mess. It has plays from Jags book, Jon Grudens Book, and some of Olsens book too.
3) The defense ended up going back to the Tampa Two. How many wins would they have gotten?
Its starting to seem like we cannot fully blame Morris or Dominik for this, but be known, it cannot happen again. A franchise QB like Josh Freeman needs continutity, and a running game around him. I hope we are a pass happy team now because of the playbook disaster and the maturing of Freeman at a faster pace.
IN Game Decisions: - Morris has been average, slightly below. But he seems to have learned some lessons along the way.
1) Clifton Smiths fumble eneded the 4 way running back race, and losing our two fullbacks ended the 3 way race too. But the two headed attack hasnt really done anything great.
2) Early on, Morris would seem to listen to players telling him to challenge a play based on their feeling. We havnt seen that happen.
3) Having guts to onside kick is great, but when you chicken out on 4th and 2, you lose some credibility. Deciding when to go for it, or not, is not easy. He has had a chance to learn from that this year.
4) Chest bumping will not be frowned upon...Gruden was far worse and no one said a word when we were 4-12 as to why he was pumping fists and going BOOM BOOM BOOM. Thats the way Raheem coaches...so be it.
But we have to go to the Head Coach when dishing out grades because ultimately it is his team. This team does NOT run the ball and the last three games is going to show us how much of what he says he means, or is hot air.
Player Coaching responsibilities- Lets face it, the team has never quit....up till last week. The Jets game showed us some offensive players who quit, and offensive guys are farthest from Morris as far as loyalty. These next three games, will show us how much Morris is in charge. If the Bucs are outplayed in the next three games, despite the lack of talent, Morris can kiss his job goodbye, and I will be calling for it. It will mean the Players are no longer hearing his message, and thats why we got rid of Chuky is it not?

I can not believe I am saying this but....
I agree with what Bill Belichik said the other night during a post-games PC.
“Stats are for Losers, the only thing that matters is the WIN!!!!”
Under Morris’ coaching the Bucs to many seem to be getting worse. Only 3 points after 12 games together!!! Atrocious!
I can understand lobbying for the guy if he was getting significently better but with the work he has displayed I can’t see why he deserves anothet season. Again, If I hire a guy to manage my company I would give him a short time to get use to it and start producing qualtiy work. If after that time he is putting out poor quality work, damaging the reputation of my product, the name of my company and losing customers I would fire him and have him escorted off the property before allowing him to run my company into the ground! Just my opinion!!!

The end of the day, wins matter
but stats are used to help evaluate, rate and compare teams and players. I’ve heard many people say stats are for losers, in fact, Morris has said the same thing. The funny part is, the people who say that, end up using stats to discuss points later in the same press conference.
I always find it funny when a coach says that and then 3 questions later says , “Well, we were 50% on 3rd downs”. Isnt 50% on 3rd downs a stat?

I have noticed that....
And my intentions weren’t trying to say it in a mean way I just agree that stats don’t tell the actual truth and many people put way more trust and belief in them than they deserve. Stats can be manipulated in many case to validate the pro or con of the issue.
I have seen way to many games that were hard to enjoy but yet the team that by their stats they should have lost but won. I have seen it many times were teams have good stats and still lose. QB stats are one of the worse. A QB with a high rating doesn’t mean he is accurate because it could be that he just gets the ball close enough and the WR is just talented enough to do what he has to in order to catch the ball. In the same way a QB with a bad Rating may be super accurate and none of the WR can catch if their life depended on it.
I will be honest with you Buc Wild, I almost did it myself. It is easy to do and not realize it. I was going to add at the end of that post about the Bucs went 0-14 on first downs (or something like that). How do you have a coach and team that has been together this long, struggle for so long to even get a 1st down in a game and still say “Give that coach another Season.” I want to see my team win, not purposely choice to be mediocre (if they can even get their) for the next few years!!!!
“May the Bucs soon reign!!!”

Stats dont give you a full picture for sure.
A QB could come in at the end of a blowout, throw 1 incomplete pass and take 3 knees to end the game and his rating will be 39.6 (I think). Did he play that bad? No. But stats are all we have to compare two (or more)players/teams. How else can we saw that WR 1 is better (or worse) than WR 2? Because I said so doesnt hold much water, he player better is so generic and biased. Stats can be easily manipulated if you are selective, but if you show every stat, or category, or those that are vital in a certain situation, it gives you a better picture.
Thats why in my piece on the Bucs through 14 weeks, I tried to put it all out there, to be sure I wasnt being selective.
I get your point, Im not trying to debate you on it. When Duemig, or other people say “Stats or for losers”, its usually because the stats contradict their points. Everyone wants to use stats when it supports them, but they want to ignore them when it goes against their opinion.

Case in point..
after the 2006 phily game, Duemig brought up the Bucs 400+ yards given up to Derrick Brooks on his show, Brooks said shoulda coulda woulda, we won the game.

It's amazing what having wide receivers that catch the ball consistently can do for a QB
No knock on Drew Brees (who I think is one of the 3 top QB’s in the league), but if you watch a Saints game, watch how many balls are dropped by his receivers/backs. You can count them on one hand, if there are any at all to count.

Some people get irrate when others say this...
But I feel that really good receivers are the only thing that keeps Tom Brady in the top QB talk. Matt Cassel did probably as good as Brady would have done (11-5) that whole season. IMO Cassel is now struggling at Kansas City with fairly good receivers but they just aren’t as good as the ones he threw to in New England and it causes one to wonder if the so called “Great” Tom Brady could do any better!

I disagree, look how many ex pats receivers can do anything once they leave.
Sometimes the WR makes the QB. Sometimes the QB makes the WR. Mark Duper and Clayton would never have been heard of if not for Marino.
Then again, look what happened once Moss was taken away from Minnesota. We havnt heard from him since…

Stats are obviously important...
To me stats are for losers always came up on the Monday morning stat sheet, when you always seem to see the days biggest passers lost the game. Not so sure that still is as evident as it was in the 80s and 90s.

I like how you write like you have some kind of say in any of this.

Loderunner,
of course I have no say in this. your obviously new to this site, or you would know my position has always been that no one on here has ANY type of say in what happens to the Bucs, or football whatsoever, and that we should just let things happen as they may, instead of trying to chart a course for a franchise that doesnt even know you exist.
Im writing for your entertainment, should you choose to enjoy it. Thanks for reading any way you look at it.

So to reiterate my main position...
Its not on or off the fense to say these last three games are the more important part of the report card, because I do not mean to imply that if we win, he has saved his job. Im simply saying that the way the offense came out flat in practice Friday and in the game sunday could, no should, be a red flag.
And that if Morris has lost the team, then he should be removed at years end.
If that was just an abberation, then it should be treated as such: IE Not a glowing sign of “Ok Morris is a good coach now”, but simply " Ok, Morris hasnt lost the team like we were worried about, now lets go back to the pros and cons" debate on how they feel about Morris.
Keep in mind, the only people looking for Morris’ head so far are some fans. For all we know, the Glazers may have known well that the team would not win more than a couple of games, with the plan of completely rebuilding this team. If they are looking at the big picture, which is what we should be doing to, then a 1-15 season is not much to sacrifice if the team is putting together a franchise to be proud of in the future with multiple talented draft picks and SMART (as in not needless, careless, Redskins style) Free Agency spending.
Is it any wonder the Redskins brought in Bruce Allen? The GM with a reputation for getting teams out of salary cap hell quickly.

The media has been on him too, and this is the only site where there is some support for him. It was a bad move to hire him, and will be a great move to fire him. Even Rich Kotite got more wins out his teams, and he’s probably the worst coach in the history of all sports, IMO.

dont worry when morris is fired these same guys backing him will say the bucs made a good move.
every one but a few guys here thinks morris sucks. 1-12 need i say more.
by magicman775 on Dec 19, 2009 4:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
your absolutely correct magicman..
I will back the move, not say it was a good move, but back the move.
WHY? because Im a real Bucs fan. Im not a raheem fan. Not a gruden fan. Not a freeman fan.
Bucs fan.
And a smart enough one to know where my knowledge is in life….If I were capable of being a GM or head coach, that is where I would be. Im not a journalist either. This is a Blog. Its my opinion I write, not the news. I dont have to be partial, I can be the biggest homer I want to be…there are plenty of other people on the masthead who can crucify Bucs players and coaches. I only do it when they really deserve it. See Gaines Adams. See Trent Dilfer. Other than that, I cant think of any other Bucs player Ive openly said needs to go. Im fairly sure the Bucs have people more talented to make decisions that anyone on this Masthead or this Comment section.

..so If I see players quitting on this team in the next three games..
you will see a “Morris Must Go” headline out of me, maybe as early as Monday morning. But if I see players still playing hard for the guy, then I stand by my opinion that he should be given a second season to continue the rebuilding.
There will be no excuse for going anything less than 6-10 next year either..

Pewter Report is still waffling a bit too.
Again, Im not saying he must stay. If he gets fired tomorrow I back the move, thats what I do. Im a Bucs fan.
But I really like Raheem and I think he is going to be a great Head Coach here, especially now that he had his year under fire behind him.
I just want to see how the team plays out the last three games.
