A defining moment in a young career: Freeman leads a comeback
On a day when a franchise celebrated its past, it got a peek at its future. And through that window came relief for a head coach. For a city, triumph. For a team, victory.
And for a quarterback, an arrival.
On a cool, breezy November afternoon, Josh Freeman stood tall. He played with poise, he made good decisions, and just when it looked like the Packers were going to roll out of town with a victory, he delivered.
Everyone has a defining moment in their career that signifies their arrival. Some images stand out in a fan’s mind more than others. Some moments are more inspiring than others. For me, Freeman’s moment came in the fourth quarter.
After an 83-yard kickoff return by Clifton Smith, Freeman took the field with under 13 minutes left in the game, down by 11. On 2nd and goal, he dropped back and scanned the field to find his options well-covered in the secondary. He spied a running lane and darted for the end zone. As the defense collapsed to stop Freeman, whose eyes remained downfield, he saw that the collapsing defense allowed Kellen Winslow to spring free in the back of the end zone. Just as he reached the line of scrimmage, he pulled back and put a high-arching pass where only Winslow could get it, and he did.
"That’s what big-time quarterbacks do," head coach Raheem Morris said. "They keep their eyes down the field even when they break the pocket, always looking for the big play."
At that moment, a rookie made a veteran move. A kid manipulated the fourth-ranked passing defense and began what would be his first fourth-quarter comeback, something Buccaneer quarterbacks have historically lacked the ability to do.
In the fourth quarter alone, Freeman was 6 for 10 passing with 78 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, his numbers were hardly impressive, despite his three touchdowns. He did, however, complete 14 passes to five different receivers, and took only one sack, despite constant pressure.
The mistakes were there. There was an interception on a poorly thrown ball. There were missed shots at open receivers down the field. But when it counted, he delivered.
"He threw some shots down the field," Morris said. "Some of them will be big plays soon. And that’ll be really exciting. But it was a great start for him. We gotta keep building and keep growing, and obviously patience it still gonna be a virtue."
Though it's only been one game, the future looks bright for Freeman and the Buccaneers. He showed the intangible skills - the instincts, the things you can’t teach - and as the supporting cast gets better, the numbers will follow, including the victories.

Excellent article!
I agree with you completely. He made the mistakes I expected him to make (although honestly less than I though). The the things he did that I did not expect were all good, & that is a great thing for the future I believe. I have always been on the fence with Freeman, I never liked nor disliked the pick. However, once he was signed I instantly became a fan, because he was a buc. I am always a fan of a player on the bucs until they give me a reason not to be. Freeman gave me another reason to be a fan of his this week.

I think that Freeman played a great game
from a clutch perspective. His numbers were not good. Less than 50% completion percentage etc. but those will come in time. The clutch throws were amazing though. I am confident to say that J.J. could not have made those two 4th quarter TD throws. The two point conversion was also impressive.
I think that Freeman is still going to have a tough go of it. The team did him a LOT of favors this week by putting him in great position to win. I think being “clutch” at this point in his career is probably the best asset to have in a young QB. We already knew that he had all of the physical abilities of an NFL QB, but now we are starting to see that he may possess some of the intangibles as well.
I would like to take this opportunity to humbly apologize to young Mr. Freeman. I doubted you and you proved me wrong, please keep doing so. Next week you will face a hungry Miami defense that is still stinging from the 332 yards that Brady put on them this week. Lets hope your teammates can put you into a similar position.

Well put
We knew all along he had the physical talent, but he showed a lot of things that can’t be taught. As the players around him get better, he could become a pretty dangerous quarterback. Raheem Morris looks like he has a little more job security, for now, eh?

Freeman = Confidence
He didn’t play scared like JJ did. I do admit I was confused with the pick because all the talent coming out this year, but maybe this guy will work out. It gives us hope and now I’m wondering why thy didn’t start him against Dallas. I hope he keeps it up and stays confident, cause I only ask to be competitive.

Speaking of players around him
I saw 87 on the field a good number of times, but he didn’t catch one pass. Freeman showed great promise but if you want a QB to develop you need reliable receivers. We need to finally give up Clark and give someone else try, especially with Bryant looking like hes going to be messing with his knee for the rest of the year. Either bring up one of our practice squad guys or look for someone else.

I've liked Freeman as a QB since day one
But I thought he was a real project who would need a year or two on the bench to pan out. Obviously it’s only one game, but he made things happened and looks like he’ll grow into the role very well. You must be thrilled.
For my part, I worry a little more about those Falcons-Bucs games a little later on….

Broncos Fan Here
but you Bucs fans have a winner in Josh Freeman, I believe. The kid has good poise in the pocket and has limitless potential. We Broncos hope to go to 7-1 by beating the Steelers and it will be tough, but that’s how you want to win. Oh yes, nice blast from the past with the creamsicle uniforms. I need to get a Doug Williams throwback jersey. Good luck for the rest of this season.

Yes
the creamsicles were pretty dope. I admit. On an unrelated note, the Broncos D just scored a touchdown. Kudos to you and your team, and my fantasy team, as that solidified a W for me this week. Rock on.

i was wrong
About Freeman, i said sit him the whole year, and i only saw the 2ed half of the game, he looked great! The only thing i did not like was him dropping back 30+ times…we have 3 running backs who can get 100 yards a game, a young Oline and a WR who loves to knock people on their asses…I understand we where down and had to throw, i just hope in our next game, we start the game with cadillac williams, and give Freeman 3rd and short to deal with, plus with K2, Sammie, and AB being guy don’t drop many balls, i can see our offense finally being what we thought it was going to be. Freeman should only be dropping back 20-25 times and most of these should be 3rd and short

That's true
But I think the only reason they threw so many times is because they were playing from behind. If they can get leads early, which they haven’t done all year, the running game will be much more of a factor. I can’t wait till that happens1
