OC Greg Olson signed to contract extension
Well folks, the title says it all. Just breaking the news ;)
Bucs signed offensive coordinator Greg Olson to a contract extension.
Terms of the deal aren't known, but Olson will definitely return as the Bucs' playcaller in 2010. The deal is a plus for rookie QB Josh Freeman, who will have continuity and has shown promise in his three starts. Olson comes from the Scott Linehan style of offense, which takes vertical shots and requires a big-armed, aggressive quarterback. Freeman possesses those qualities.
Once again from my trusty website: www.rotoworld.com With this move, i'm sure he will be here for some time. I really just hope we see some progress in the run game, so we can run some play-action to -Michael Clayton- our receivers. Stay tuned for more updates, and more importantly, GO BUCS!!!!! -RJ

I brought up the fanpost from RJbitz02 to the front page and removed the duplicate...
I also emailed you UNFNOLE with photo clips on how to do this, its very easy, and its great to spot when someone like RJ brings something to the community like this.

Not good
I have no faith in this coaching staff. Might as well bring Leeman Bennett back, after all he did win more games.

WoW against Atlanta 2 passes to Briant = touchdown and our OC didn’t see it or wasn’t looking because he never called another pass to Briant downfield agian. He is no coorinator he’s an idiot!
Alanta had fill in defensive backs and this guy does not try another pass down field come on. You can’t try harder to loose. IDIOT.

I saw a few passes down field...
besides, everyone is pissed because the didnt run the ball more.
Youd have to ask Freeman why he didnt go downfield more often.

I think Freeman takes his shots when he gets them
But being at the games, I can honestly say that probably about 60% of our pass plays don’t feature a route over 12 yards. At the Saints game, my buddy and I watched every pass play feature the 8-10 yard routes. Very rarely does anyone go downfield on a designed play. Its mindboggling.

I see some open receivers down field occaisionally
but Freeman doesn’t see them cause he’s being chased.

Actually Id like to apologize to Turbo33, he made a good observation:
I watched the game again (no it wasnt any less painful) and we DID totally abandon the deep ball in the second half. Nice observation Turbo

Thank you!
Haha never had a front-page post. Thanks Niko.
I really hope to see some progress offense/defense before this season ends, or we’re going to have a huge problem this offseason…
Does anyone else think our O-Linemen are better suited to pass block than run block?

Last year, I'd say run block.
This year, I’d say we’re kind of balance.

I think this stinks.
I don’t think Greg Olson is a good play caller at all. I can’t believe we are going to let this guy be our OC next year. He was an emergency fill in for Jags, and I don’t think he has done anything to win the job. We’re not even going to look for accomplished coordinators? What a joke.
I don’t think the theory that Freeman needs the same coordinator two years in a row holds any water. He has had already had two coordinators during his brief pro career and he has seemed to handle the transition just fine.
I’ve got to say that although Olson may have been some type of pupil of Linehan, his offensive play calling this season has reminded me more of a poor man’s John Gruden. We have not taken many shots down the field at all, and when we have they have not connected.
Charlie Weis, I weep for what could have been.

I would agree with you assesments.
Jason Campbell has become the poster boy for Quarterbacks who go through too many systems. The problem with this is Jason Campbell isn’t any good. It’s not the systems. He misses open WR, make terrible decisions and makes a lot of mistakes.
I have no problem with Olsen staying if he can commit to the run. I dont think Freeman will ever be the kind of QB we want throwing 60/40. This isn’t a knock on him. I would say the same about Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and a handful of other starting quarterbacks in the league.
Makes it 25 plane crashes this year.

I am just dumbfounded
That they didn’t even test the waters on anyone else. Are they really that impressed with Olson that they think he is going to be the best coordinator for hire in in 2010. By already signing him to an extension it is if they are deluding themselves that this guy is a hot commodity. What is going on over there? I am really beginning to believe that they have no idea what they are doing.
And yes, you’re right. Jason Campbell is horrible.

They obvious want to keep familiarity for Freeman.
That’s pretty with how little they tweaked the offense when JJ came in. They want an offense Freeman can excel in without rapid changes. I also think they want to give Olsen the benefit of the doubt since they did toss him in the role suddenly.

I don't think its that he's that good, I think they needed continuity
They have gotten a lot of bad press over Jags and now Bates, that they needed some positive spin, someone that would stay around. It wasn’t the most practical move, but one they felt they had to make.

I don't think
that anyone would hold it against them if they went out and hired a real OC next season. Olson has failed twice as an OC. Continuity doesn’t help if its a bad thing that you are continuing. We are the 26th ranked offense right now. If they had waited and decided to go with Olson after interviewing people I wouldn’t be so upset, but right now it seems like they are rewarding Olson for no reason whatsoever.

they gave him the extension in september
right around week one this is old news that just happened to come out after bates got fired

You misread the article.
Jag’s was fired on Sept. 3 and Olsen was promoted. This extension was worked up and signed in the last several weeks according to PR.

Rewarded for failure
Guess it doesn’t matter cause when the head coach gets canned, the rest of them will be too, extensions or no extensions.

True, if it comes to that after 2010 season.
Because you can bet your house Raheem Morris will be the head coach here next year.

I am glad he got the extension.
The continuity will help Freeman, and the offense hasn’t been their big problem. Give Freeman the #1 spot in the offseason and preseason, and I think we will see a really talented guy.
I think Morris will be given enough time to prove all the haters wrong. I don’t think they are really that far away from having a respectable team. They will focus on building a better D for next year. As long as there is a general trend of improvement that is good enough for me. I also don’t mind the changes at OC prior to the season or the DC during the season. I’d rather see a team that is willing to make the changes necessary to improve than someone with blinders on and unwilling to change.
My hope is for fans and sportswriters to have a longer term outlook than one year, or sometimes even one game.

Well Spoken Terp12.
I suppose the fans would rather have had us keep an OC that had a flaw spotted.
Everyone wants change. Well here it is.
Ive said it once, I will say it again, a lot of fans on here would NEVER make it through half of the losing seasons this team has been through. Would just turn into Miami, Jacksonville or whoever, like the ones in the 90s turned into Cowboy and 49ers fans before switching to Pewter jerseys.

I kind of split the baby a little bit on this one...
I don’t particularly like the offensive system in place, generally speaking. Like UNFNOLE raises, the Bucs simply don’t run the football enough… and this is not like 2006 when they couldn’t get into 2nd/3rd and manageable often enough. This team can run the ball better. How well can they run the ball? WE STILL DON’T FREAKING KNOW!!!!!!!! If the Bucs are on a drive, running the football, controlling the flow, they suddenly stop at the first sign of 2nd and 9 and remain fixated on the mid-range and deep pass from there on. This is a major complaint many (of the more vocal) Bucs fans and local media had with Gruden when calling for his head the past few seasons.
Personally, I’m baffled by what results to expect long-term from this offensive scheme. This year, I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen a WR screen, a screen pass to RB, or a designed pass to a RB (TD to Ward in Green Bay game comes to mind, but still not often enough). It’s drop back and throw it down the field come hell or high water. Great for TV, as they say, but not a keen way to break in a young QB. Relying on a deep passing game can be folly without the right personnel, leading to various drive-stopping plays…sacks, fumbles lost, zero yard plays, interceptions. If Olson wants to run a shotgun based offense and turn Freeman into a downfield gunslinger, then I guess the running game will become secondary…. which is a shame since Raheem said this is going to be a physical, violent, run-based team. Really…. did the Bucs know what this team’s “direction” was going into this season?
(Climbing off high horse)
That said, after the circus of demotions/firings/player cuts that have taken place from this regime so far in 2009, it’s nice to see them try to maintain some personnel continuity and some damned sanity. IF they’ve decided that Olson’s pass-first scheme IS the direction of this team, that they’re going to adopt it, draft and bring in talent that fits this system, then I’m ok with the extension…even though i personally don’t like the running game being effectively placed on the back-burner.

Last WR screen I remember seeing was against Philly.
But our WRs insisted on dropping those that day. RB screens I’ve noticed attempts here and there.
As for the shotgun offense. I think Olson is using that simply because it may be what Freeman is used to from KSU.

I agree with those who say we need to run the ball more.
I hear that come out of the Coaches mouths. I can only assume they are passing more to teach Freeman more, since the year is shot.
This may be why AB said “they are just trying to get Freeman acclimated” (Not the exact words, been a 10 hour day, too tired to look them up).

Based on the history of this GM/Coach...
the extension means nothing. Olsen will probably be fired before camp starts next year.

Doubtful, I think your assuming Morris and Dominik will be gone and thus Olsen,
But most sources say that is not going to happen. That the Bucs are behind the two for the next couple years at least (2010).

Haha.
I would like to see them go get a proven QB coach……
Jim Zorn? Not kidding. I know he was miserable as a HC but he is a likable guy who is credited with a lot of Matt Hasselbecks development and even ‘Skins fans have thought Colt Brennan has made some strides. He is a good position coach, but just don’t ever let him call plays.

Olsen is a proven QB coach, thats why Gruden got him.
Drew Brees was one of Olsens guys at Purdue. People love to bring up how Olsen was fired as OC at Detroit and the Rams.
Same people have no clue the Rams had the No.6 offense under his tenure, The passing attack was 3rd, and the red zone offense was 2nd. Hmm, sound familiar? Bucs have the top red zone offense? But we want to change OCs? why?

OH, I think he will continue to do both.
I dont think its that unusual to have an OC and QB coach be one and the same, as long as the OC is not also the HC.
Someone should look up and see how many (if) OCs are also the QB, or QB coaches are doing something else too like Tight Ends or something.

I'm sure most do.
I would rather give Olsen as few responsibilities as possible. I think the more he has to do, the more gameplans will suffer. It’s sounds trivial, but I don’t think Olsen is equipped to do both.
