DC Jim Bates relieved of play calling duties

I'm sure there will be a larger article posted about this in the near future, but i just wanted to get the early word out:

I got this from my most reliable website: rotoworld.com

Bucs coach Raheem Morris has relieved Jim Bates of defensive coordinator duties and will take over defensive play-calling responsibilities.
The 1-9 Bucs have the league's worst run defense, allowing 168.9 yards per game, and allow the second-most points in the league at 29.4. Bates will remain with the team to help Morris out with game-planning, but Morris is expected to return the team to their familiar Tampa Two scheme. The Bucs have very few playmakers on defense and didn't change personnel in the offseason to help out Bates' new 4-3 scheme.
Personally, i think this is a great idea. I don't think Bates has the right players right now for his scheme. No pressure in our line, letting big plays to take place in the man to man coverage. I rarely saw blitzes, and our run defense is dead last in the NFL. What do you guys think? Let's see what Raheem Morris has up his sleeve. Hopefully he has some 'Kiffin' in him ;)

Bates sure did miss a lot of tackles

and was caught out of position repeatedly. Yeah, it’s all Jim’s fault, cause Raheem has never done anything wrong. Well I think the wrong person was relieved. I’m sure Jim Bates is happy to be allowed to leave after this and go work for a real coach.

Funny, however you want to look at it, Bates system would have required a complete overhauling of the Bucs roster. I dont think Dominik or Morris realized the scope of the players needed for his system until it was too late.

We should all be happy. It means we need half as many players to fix this defense now.

I dont have a problem with coaches or players who learn lessons on the go. You cant teach the things that Morris has instilled in this team, the reason the players have not quit, nor do you hear any dissension in the ranks. Clock Management, those things you learn with mistakes. As long as Bucs players have the utmost respect for Morris, the team will be fine.
People like you will learn respect when the Ws come.
Why else are the neysayers out in full force this week but stayed away the last two.

Nothing changed on the team, everything is the same, but we cry sky is falling after one game.

It will be interesting to see how the coments change on here over the next 6 weeks as the results change.

So you are happy he was demoted?

Yesterday you were saying that you wanted us to keep Bates and Olson, that you thought they needed more time. I think that you don’t want to say negative things about the Bucs because you feel you will be betraying the team or something. Its not like that. Us naysayers are big fans too, we just are willing to point out the negative things about the team. I am much more skeptical with you. I’m not sold on Morris, so I don’t think everything will be fine just because the players have respect for him. I’m not jumping on board quite yet, because I am still a little worried that Raheem is going to drive us off a cliff.

In reality nothing we say is taken into consideration, but I agree with the people that are saying that this move seems more than a little desperate. I wanted Bates gone, but they didn’t even have the guts to fire him. So, now we’re going to keep paying the guy and he doesn’t have to do anything but “game plan”. I don’t get. Is he taking a pay cut? I’m sure this won’t be the last time that the Dominik/Morris regime leaves me scratching my head.

oops.

Should say “I am much more skeptical than you” not with you. I’m a bonehead.

I like the change....

I was not impressed with Jim Bates scheme anyway. If you break it down , the stats were terrible, concepts were bad and the 2 minute defense has cost us atleast 4 games.

In my opinion , they should have never got away from the tampa 2, They should have just picked players in the draft and during free agency that can be the type of players that Sapp, brooks, rice, lynch and many others were. The system works, alot of teams in the NFL run it and are successful and the Bucs have a super bowl ring because of it.

Bates defense would take years to become effective and morris knows that he need to show some improvement NOW! Bates wasn’t at practice today and I don’t see why he would stay around. I think that he will leave just like jagz did, I have reason to believe that he was offered the same deal as jags was given.

LeeCaz, you give me an opportunity to explain what kind of fan I am...

Yes your right, I thought they should have kept the two of them, but Im fine with the move.
I was a chucky supporter last year, but when they fired him and made the move, I supported Morris.
I supported Wyche, Dungy, McKay, all of them.

The reason is, I am a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan. I am not a fan of Raheem Morris. I am not a fan of Jon Gruden, otherwise I would watch every MOnday night football game. I am a Fan of the BUCS, and who ever coaches the Bucs, has my support. Who ever is the quarterback, has my support, unless I feel he really is no good.
I did not support Gaines Adams. I did not support Byron Leftwich (But I did say give him a chance), I did not support Trent Dilfer after game one of 1999. So unless someone is SO BAD, beyond a shadow of a doubt the fault lies with them, I am going to support them for one simple reason.
If I really knew that much about football, I would not be writing on here. I would be working with the Bucs, or the Bulls, or the Spongers, or whoever.
Ive never been the kind of fan who says “We shouldnt run that” or " what are we doing with this", because I know that I dont know better.
Im simply a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and whatever they do, I have faith that they know what they are doing.
Because in the long run, if Im wrong, and your right about an issue, what does that prove?
The Bucs arent going to fire Olsen if you and I decide they should!
So instead, I choose to back the decisions of the Club, the players who play for the club, and the coaches who coach the club, because thats what I am, a fan of the BUCS. Nothing more.
And Ive been doing this for 30 years now, and I lose no sleep when someone gets fired, or the Bucs go 2-12.
I have every single game from 1986, and I have every single game from 1977, as well as each game from 1979 and 2002. They all mean just as much to me.

I have nothing against a naysayer, a person who has an opinion, Im sure there were people who thought I was an idiot when I called for Trent Dilfer to be benched. But I had seen enough of Trent Dilfer to know he was not the answer.

Are the Bucs making mistakes? sure they are, but remember how Keystone Cops they looked when they fired Dungy? the next year theyre holding up the Lombardi Trophy! You dont know whats going to happen!

Now, as to the specifics of your post above, it doesnt take guts to fire someone. Thats a cheap thing to do, and is easy. Its a lot harder to keep a man on, and show respect.
I give a man credit for saying I made a mistake, and I was wrong, now lets correct it.
So if Raheem drives us off a cliff my friend, we will both be in the same car together. In the end, it really doesnt matter. I have my way of being a fan and you have yours.
I just think mine is less stressful.

It does seem kind of useless to be complaining about things we cant control, but at the same time what does it matter if the BUCS win, or lose. It doesnt affect my life. You would probly say, you get enjoyment out of watching the BUCS win. I get enjoyment out of pretending my decision matters.

Actually, in some cities like Philly, and New York the fans really do have a voice in the team. Look what happend in KC with LJ. The fans got him booted.

I just think mine is less stressful.

I know your not trying to convert us “monday morning quarterbacks” to your conservative style. I am just saying, its fun to pretend like I know what I am talking about. Even if it doesnt make a difference what I say.

Of course Hook85, there is no fun in just sitting back and only watching and mindlessly saying "thats ok"...

..so I dont mean to sound like I am at that extreme. I complain about things too, maybe just not as much as the next guy. For instance, why on 3rd and 2 do we ALWAYS line up in the shotgun? Must it ALWAYS be a passing down? we do have a good running game. How about lining up in a pro formation and LOOK LIKE me might run, as well as do it once in a while.

The Luke McCown handling was a joke. The guy was clearly better than Leftwich, but Ive got no room to beef, Luke sucked it up when he was given a chance. No I dont recall it being a fair 50/50 chance, but it wasnt worse than 45/55, a few plays like the Saints game in 07 and he would have been the starter. Would it have mattered? probably not. But the whole OTA, Preseason, camp was a waste. Trust me, Im fully aware Raheem has made some mistakes, some big ones. But I seriously do not believe he is at fault for the 1-9 record. I thought Jon Gruden learned a lot while on the job. People thing those with OC or DC experience make better coaches, but I say if you dont have coaching experience at the HC level, its all the same anyways.

Some people do think they know more then the professionals, that get paid to make those decisions. I surely am not one of them. I understand where you were coming from now.

btw you just say Hook, 85 was just a filler.

They quit on Sunday.

Regardless, once the Glazers see the huge drop in season ticket renewals this off-season, they’ll make a move, it is a business after all.

This is exactly what happened to him with the Broncos.

2 years ago, Mike Shanahan did the same thing, stripping Bates of play calling duties and even dictating a shift from Bates’ 3-4 back to the 4-3, even though personnel were signed (Sam Adams) and traded away (Gerard Warren) in the preseason specifically because of their perceived fitness for the 3-4.
