Morris takes blame for penalty, loss

In light of controversial call, Raheem Morris stepped onto the playing field and jawed with the officials.  Morris obviously felt the call was incorrect, and given them time remaining (under 2 minutes in first half) and field position (inside the 20), wanted to make sure his voice was heard by the referees.

Morris has since taken ownership of those comments, and while he didn't explicitly detail what he said, he had this to say in response to the penalty.

This loss is solely on me.  At the end of the half, getting a personal foul is totally unacceptable. I’m taking those points, that’s on me, that’s how much we lost by. I should be given all the blame for that. That’s a discipline issue on my part and I didn’t do the right thing. That’s a great lesson for me as a young coach, that’s a great lesson for my team

Without knowing what he said, it's tough to say if he went over the line.  The officials obviously thought he did, but I can't think it was just a few "F" bombs, as we've seen just about every coach outside of Dungy drop some of those.

Morris did go on to say this.

He was trying to tell it to me. I didn’t want to hear it at that point.  I didn’t matter what the explanation was, I really didn’t care. I thought it was the wrong call, he disagreed and he’s the official. I gave them an extra (seven) yards to make it an easier touchdown. Put that on me.'

I certainly was not thrilled about the penalty on Morris and would like to know the justification, but at the time, I don't know how else he would have reacted.  This wasn't a case of a bad luck type of play, but of an interpretation that was not favorable for the Bucs.

Would the Fins have scored a touchdown if they hadn't gotten those free 7 yards?  Who knows.

This may be biased speculation on my part, but with Morris' penalty at the end of the first half and Winslow's at the end of the second half, it seemed like we saw the brunt of these touchy calls.

What do you think?  Should Morris have gotten the penalty?  Did that cost us the game?

Without knowing what he said it is hard to say. Gruden dropped the bomb all the time, and I do not recall him being flagged for it. I also have no idea what Winslow did, since they did not show it on TV. I do not think either lost the game for sure, but they did not help. The kick and kick coverage held Miami back, they just could not stop them from moving down the field. Even though they lost it was nice to watch a pretty exciting football game. I feel they are moving in the right direction.

To me it looked like Raheem

was dead set on getting a penalty. They let him yell for an appropriate amount of time and when he still wouldn’t shut up, then they flagged him. He may or may not have also said something about the ref personally. Who knows? The point is that once he made his displeasure known, he should have used some of UNFNOLE’s favorite word, poise. I just don’t think he is a fit head coach right now.

He is essentially a glorified cheerleader with the ability to hurt us more than he helps us.

That may be harsh, but in my opinion it’s true. I can name about twenty coaches that could have come in here and done a much better job than Raheem. I don’t think you hire a head coach based on “potential”. Let him realize that potential as a D.C. for four or five years, then we make him the head coach.

We are going to be paying the price for this hire the rest of the season, and probably all of next season too. If he can get his act together and learn on the job then he may indeed turn out to be a good head coach, but right now I’m leaning towards NO.

Really

I think he has more poise then Gruden who known for swearing like a sailor and looking like a psycho, though obviously not as much as Dungy. Also, I think plenty of coaches are hired on their potential, especially since not everyone can have a track record equal to that of Parcells.

I understand where you're coming from

with the Parcell’s reference. But a head coach should have to be more than intelligent and good with the players to be considered for the job. Half of the offensive and defensive coordinators in the NCAA right now have just as much “potential” as Morris and more experience.

Some untrained lip readers caught him saying in the little replay

“That’s some fed up bs!” right before they threw the flag. I neither have the footage or ability to confirm this.

Should Morris have been penalized...

I think so. It seemed to me that he just couldn’t get over the play and move on. Difficult pill to swallow I agree but you’ve got to get your composure back and move on.

But that penalty did not cost the Bucs the game. Clearly the Bucs defense let the Dolphins drive about 70 yards in about 1 minute. That cost them the game.

Suggesting the penalty cost the Bucs the game is a strange comment to make. The coach seems to me to be trying hard and he seems to have the team with him at this point. But he also seems to be in well over his head.

As I’ve said previously, I hope as the players continue to improve that the coach can as well.

didnt see the game

I should be given all the blame for that

But I dont think its a good idea to blame the loss on himself.

I have more respect for him as a coach now...

It showed his passion for the team! He truly believes in the team and his players and is willing to lay his belief on the line. If he didn’t mouth off then I would have been very worried. He just needs to learn when to draw the line in the sand in future.

I agree.

I believe things like this actually help get him respect from the players too. Not necessarily the penalty (he maybe took it a little too far), but I think him getting ticked and arguing goes further with the players than saying “Awe shucks….Maybe next time”. I honestly think I reacted worse than Morris did….I was fired up when they made the interception call…

Raheems penalty didn't lose the game.

The referees before the half and the defense at the end of the game lost the game. The referees got the play wrong THREE times. One ref said it initially it was incomplete, another said it was a fumble and a touchdown, and the replay official called it an interception.
