Moving Forward Now
With the recent trade between the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets, makes me wonder if there is still something left that could make this a productive season. Here are some possible trades and Free Agent pickups that could put our team in the right direction.
Antonio Bryant- with his Franchise tag, I am sure that we would have to do a sign and trade with him. He isn't a #1 receiver here because we have no #1 receiver. He is most likely gone at the end of the season, so why don't we try to get value from him. Possible 5-7 round pick, it's a lose but better for both parties.
Solution: D. J. Hackett and Reggie Williams are available. Put Micheal Clayton as #1 to see if he can prove himself and Sammie Stroughter at #2. Bring in Hackett or Williams as a solid #3. Next season Brandon Marshall #1
Barrett Ruud- He is a Beast when given the proper scheme. We could get solid value for him with his youth and talent. Possible 3rd and 5th.
Solution: Nate Webster and Ryan Nece. Would put up the same numbers under Bates' crappy defense so no harm. Next season use FA or 2nd round pick.
Will Allen- if we could get any value it would be in the 7th round area. With Tanard Jackson back, he won't be seeing much time on the field.
Solution: Marlon McCree, Dwight Smith, or Todd Johnson to rotate in with TJack and Sabby. Chris McAllister and Ty Law are also available and could play corner or safety and help out the youth.
Byron Leftwich- He is not going to be the starter anymore, so why have him waste his time. We could get a 3rd or 4th round pick for him.
Solution: Brian Griese could be brought back to help teach Josh Freeman the ropes and he would make for a solid back-up.
Earnest Graham- poor guy! He has lost touches and hasn't done anything wrong. He has major value and we could capitolize on that. Trade him and let him have a chance somewhere else. Possible 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Solution: Dominik Rhodes is available and would be good if Ward or Williams gets banged up.
Available Free Agents:
DT- Dwayne Robertson, Shaun Smith, John Thorton
DE- Paul Spicer, Kalimba Edwards, Earl Cochran
OLB- Marcus Washington, Boss Bailey, Marlon Greenwood
CB- Adam Jones, Patrick Surtain
OT- Langston Walker, Levi Jones, Mark Tauscher, Kwame Harris
OG- Pete Kendall, Dan Buenning
We have so many problems and so many holes. The youth movement isn't working, so I feel that some valuable veterans could come in and give us a boost. We need to obtain value for players that might test the market and we need value for players that are wasting up bench space but are good enough to play. I know after 4 weeks blowing up the team might seem ridiculous, but the trade deadline is coming up fast and I hope we utilize it before it's gone.

I disagree
I say let them learn and grow as a team. We can stick it out this year, we have in the past.

then next year we will be sitcking it out again.....
If we build a team with one piece at a time, by the time we get all the pieces, Josh Freeman will be retiring. We need alot of help and the draft isn’t going to work for us in the next two years. If we want to be back in the playoff hunt, we need serious FA play.

I agree to a point
I believe next year will be a hard year as well, but not as bad as this year is shaping up to be. Go with the draft and try to pick up some quality players next year in the draft. The win right now at all cost sounds like the way Gruden and Allen were doing things, which seems like it may be a big reason we are in the situation we are in. Remember the young Bucs the year before Dungy came on board? Those guys grew together and formed a great team. I am in it for the long hall, so a loosing season this year, a hopefully an 8 – 8 season next year, and than a young competitive team for years to come may emerge.

You dont build a team through Free Agency, you build a team through the draft.
Then you fit pieces in via FA. Redskins build through FA, Patriots and Steelers build through the draft.
We have built through FA, because our draft has been so terrible.
Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, Warren Sapp, Ronde Barber, Brian Kelly, Donnie Abraham, Mike Alstott were all drafted.
Alvin Harper, Bert Emmanuel, Derrick Deese, Charlie Gardner, Tim Brown, were all Free Agent signees.
yes sometimes you get a Hardy Nickerson…and sometimes you draft a Dexter Jackson (WR). But Proper drafting, of which we wont know for years how well the current administration is worth, is what builds a football team that wins.

I agree you build a team through the draft
but we gave up valuable draft picks that kept us from retooling in the past. Now we are at a point that we need to rely on Free Agency more to be competitive next year. I was saying bringing in more players in now to evaluate for next year.
The Patriots do both well, that is why scouting is the most important part of an NFL team. We have lacked in scouting since Rich McKay was here.

I agree with you on that one,
McKay was an excellent judge of talent, but was terrible at the salary cap. Bruce Allen was great at the Salary Cap, but terrible at judging talent!

Exactually..........
It would have been great if they made McKay and Allen co-exist. Team President and GM. We would have been in alot better shape then we are now.

I think some trades would be a good thing
but the sad part is that we don’t really have much to offer anyone right now. The other team is going to know we are desperate and lowball the hell out of us. I do think shopping Bryant around is a good idea, but disagree on Ruud (unless we are not going to re-sign him).

I dont see any sense
in trading graham

That idea was for Graham's sake
if Ward and Williams are healthy, he won’t get any serious looks. Plus Morris has a hard on for Peanut. so……….help a brother out and send him somewhere that he could play. New England needs help…..Fred Taylor is going to have surgery.

You gotta keep Graham around
If Caddy gets hurt (please God no) or Ward misses every other game, there needs to be a non-fumbling option

We need more help then saving a 3rd string RB
by buccanator on Oct 9, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless the return is exceptional, you dont trade younger(ish) RB's
who can provide depth and value. What happens when Caddy leaves next year, or Ward goes down?

With the way it looks
Morris would put Peanut as our premier back, which all of us would disagree with.

I would save all trades till the offseason.
We know this season is toast. Play people, evaluate talent, then make any trades in draft/free agency.
Trading now would be to improve the team, when that is pointless.
HOWEVER, if a team that is looking to improve themselves is offering serious draft picks or something, thats a different story and should be looked into.

I think sometimes a mid-season trade has a lot more value
than an off-season trade for a team like us. Last years trade of Roy Williams is a perfect example. The Cowboys felt they needed an additional receiver to make a deep playoff run, and they gave up an arm and a leg for him.
If we could get some draft picks I think we should shop around players like Ruud and Bryant. It can’t hurt to see what the market is.

Not Ruud. and Bryant is our ONLY WR.
Eagles by 17= The Bucs are what we think they are. Eagles by 10? Respectable. Eagle by<7? A moral victory. Bucs win? See you at the airport!

I hate the "Youth" movement idea
we need a mixture of quality veterans on the team to help the youth grow. “Quality” is the key word.
by buccanator on Oct 9, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think there are plenty of veterans on the team to make a mix
Hovan, White, Barber, Faine, Bryant, Clayton, they just arnt a year away from retirement like Brooks, Dunn and Hilliard would have been. But I agree. Just like we added K2 and Ward, I see us adding 3 or 4 FA that will have an impact this offseason.
