Bucs kick away early chances at win
Call it imagination lost. Byron Leftwich was benched because of his ineffectiveness against the NY Giants; Josh Johnson was called up to use his athletic ability, and that he did, but it wasn't enough in a 16-13 loss to the Redskins.
Johnson ran 7 times for 41 yards, but only a few of his runs did not look as if they were for his life. Meanwhile throwing the ball, J.J. was a pedestrian 13 of 22 for 106 yards; 1 TD and INT each.
The Bucs took the lead early in the game with a stellar defensive effort that saw Gaines Adams probably play the best game of his career here in Tampa. Being called out by everyone including his coach, Adams got a sack on the second play that set up a 3rd and long in which the Bucs were able to get a turnover and prime real estate in the Red Zone. Johnson hit Antonio Bryant for the early lead and the Bucs weren't done yet.
Aqib Talib had a couple of interceptions in the first half, and three on the day, but his early ones and Geno Hayes spectacular plays kept the Bucs in Washington territory for most of the first half, but they came away with only 3 points to show for it. Two missed by new Bucs kicker Mike Nugent had Bucs fans longing for Matt Bryant, if not Martin Gramatica! Nugent missed kicks of 48 and 49 yards leaving 6 points shy of a 13-0 lead going into the half.
After that, The Bucs who had been running well with Cadillac Williams (16 carries 77 yards), seemed to abandon the run in the 3rd quarter as the Redskins took over the momentum with 16 3rd Qtr points. It would have been 17 if not for Ronde Barber blocking an extra point.
Tampa Bay closed the game to within 3 on a late drive with 4 minutes left, going for the FG instead of the touchdown, and hoping for the ball back from their defense. They got it back, but on third and short with two time outs left, RB Clifton Smith fumbled on a draw play that ended the day for the Buccaneers, and left them in last place with an 0-4 record.

Morris explanation for Smith instead of Williams
was that he is their 2 minute back…a responsibility that would normally fall to Ward.

Ew, if Smith really is/was the 2 minute guy
I disagree with that big time.

The game was not lost on that play.

Biggest question marks now
1) Problems remain with 3-down ratios. Failure to make third downs = failure to drive and score.
2) I don’t care if his third cousin Ted hunts me down with a crossbow now: Mike Nugent needs to go. Those missed FGs cost us the game.
3) Gaines Adams showed up for one sack. But what about the rest of the game?
4) Why was Smith out there as RB during the closing drive? Why not Graham or Caddy? If Ward was out, shouldn’t Graham have been the go-to backup?
5) Try to remember this was the Redskins. Keeping it a close game means nothing when the other team is almost as bad as you are.
:(

Adams was there
He made some plays that made it look like a pro bowler going against a rookie. I’ve really never seen him do that many moves in one game.

Look Im the last one to give him credit for anything, but he was actually hurt and not supposed to play in this game...
Gaines Adams had a streak of several plays, not one, because we were going nuts on this board during the game asking who took over his uniform for him. However, your point is correct, he didnt do much afterwards, but considering he was hurting, I say he gets a pass for this game.
I dont care if his third cousin is Robin Hood, Nugent MUST go. He is worse than Michael Husted, whom I compared him to earlier in the year. At least Como Esta Husted made a few long FGs in his day.
A lot of people want to know about why Smith was out there. Hes the fastest back on the team. A draw would work better with a fast back like him. See todays piece about hindsight. We didnt lose the game on that play.
True, the Redskins are at the bottom of the barrel and so are we. But you have to start somewhere, and you have to beat the lesser teams before you can beat the better ones. Its progress, however limited.
Excellent Comments, Thank You for them!

Adams is the least of my concerns in the Redsksins loss
The season as a whole he still is subpar, but this game didn’t fall on his shoulders.

Adams
got a sack, recovered a fumble, and deflected a pass within the first six defensive plays.

And then vanished
but this wasn’t his loss by any means.

If a DE can contribute that stat line for every game
then he would be considered one of the top players in the league.
Give the guy a break. He had a good game. What difference does it make if it came at the beginning for the end. No defensive end is going to get you more than two sacks a game on average. Be happy with Adams’ production. You are holding him to a higher standard than the rest of the league.
Just because you are watching him closely it seems like he is disappearing but that is going to be the case for any DE in the league. They get a few opportunities a game, and the good ones capitalize on it. I also saw Gaines make a few good tackles at or near the line of scrimmage throughout the rest of the game.
by LeeCaz on Oct 5, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't hold him to any higher of a standard than any other #4 supposed franchise DE.
His stat line did look good, but did he vanish because they game planned around or did he just shut down. I don’t know.
What do you take from Freeney, the old Peppers, Harrison, Suggs etc? They end up with .5 sack a game on average but are pressuring the QB and affecting the game more than that. Adams got a sack, that’s good, but he needs to affect the game consistently.

He had
A sack, a forced fumble, a deflected pass, a holding penalty called against, two tackles for a loss and five total tackles.
That is a pretty good game if you ask me.
I think your expectations are too high if that doesn’t meet them. I was on Adams just like everyone else, but I’m going to give credit where credit is due. He had an outstanding game.

I never said he had a bad game.
I want more of that play and I want it consistently. I didn’t dog him for a bad game anywhere.

I understand you want it all game
but I’m saying that if we could get that stat line every game, then he would be a top DE in the NFL. If he doesn’t show up next week, then we can lament how he isn’t consistent.

The Redskins adjusted
and doubled up on him when he came from the left side. that is why he appeared to vanish. When he lined up on Samuels, he did alot of good things. I was pleased with his performance yesterday.

Gaines Adams statline, THIS GAME, is ACCEPTABLE, not great!
He FINALLY was seen Pushing a defensive tackle instead of trying to get around them, his only move before.
However, for one game, we will give gaines adams a game ball. Oh wait, I believe BW did! He deserved it.
Now lets see next week….

Michael Clayton
I know if a player were to gamble on NFL games they would be in serious trouble, but is it against the rules to gamble on college games? – http://13psi.com/michael-clayton-betting-on-football/

he has failed to show up the past couple of games.

What positives can anyone take from this?
I hate to sound like an FSU fan, but the only way this can get any better is if it gets historically bad this season. Raheim Morris is lost and overmatched as a head coach, and so is Skippy Dominic at GM. But they will likely get a pass for the mess they created unless this team is just god awful (which isnt a stretch) It might be in the best interest of Bucs fans if they go 1-15 or 0-16 this year so that they can get 1, or god willing both of these A-clowns out of town. The only thing thats going to persuade Glazer at this point is his wallet, and perhaps a string of blackouts helps that along.

The positives in a season like this
is to see see players develope. But if the coaching staff isn’t going to develope and there is a lack player developement then we have a loss season, nothing accomplished except a good draft pick. This team from top to botton has alot of issue that will not get answered in one good draft. It will take a solid FA run and a great draft day. Which I don’t see happening in one year but two to three years.
