Editorial: 620 WDAE Takes action on Sports Show host....this time.

Seems like my whole radio listening world flipped upside down in February.

I used to cringe when I would listen to Steve Duemig on 620 because it seemed like I disagreed with EVERYTHING he had to say. Especially Jon Gruden, whom I supported last year. In the end, I understood the move to fire him, and I agree with it. The next time I call in to his show, I will let the Big Dog know he was right the whole time about him.

I think the  move to Raheem is a good one, and I think in time it will work out. Dan Sileo in the early morning was the voice of reason for me as he had a bunch of pro-Gruden messages that I agreed with. But when Jon was fired, for me, that was it. he was gone, and I moved on.

Sileo couldn't.

He has been very anti Morris and anti Dominik and every move they have made; and the Bucs 0-7 record wasnt enough.. he had to jump on a story a friend told him, without so much as doing simple internet research, something radio hosts on WDAE seem to be unable to do besides Justin Pulowski , Derek Sharpe, or Steve Duemig who DO get their work done online and are computer literate.

Speaking of the Big Dog, I am now able to listen to his show, because every since February, everything that comes out of his mouth pretty much mirrors how I feel. Besides, there is just something about his show...its very educational in so many different ways. They guy has been around football for a long time, and he has a long tie to the Buccaneers going back to the Orange days, so he knows what he is talking about.

As for Ron and Ian, I'm pretty neutral with them. I understand they have that big feud with Paul Stewart of whom I'm friends with, and I try to stay neutral in my opinions on that, as I was around for the very beginnings of that hate fest.

Star-divide

My biggest beef with Ron and Ian is the lack of general knowledge the two seem to have. How often have you heard a caller or one of them raise a question about the Bucs, and they are lost as to the basic facts; such as a record, a players stats, game results, etc.  Ian Beckles has no one to blame but himself, he was fired by Jon Gruden while doing Grudens Coaches show in Chucky's first year on the job. Gruden asked for someone who was better prepared. I have heard Beckles criticize a player, then an hour later claim, "I actually didn't watch the game".

In their defense, they are first to say they are not just a sports show, they are a talk radio show that gets into a variety of topics. Ron Diaz has been around this area a long as I can remember, as partner in the famous Ron and Ron radio show on 95 WYNF FM back in the late 70s early 80s. Still, notice the logo above? Sports? Animal?

To me the straw that breaks the back has always been the overall negativity that the entire crew from 6 am to 3pm during training camp; when I am so excited to have Bucs football start again, and Im  just brought down instantly listening to one of the three morning guys spew negativity instead of some optimism. I understand its not their job to be optimistic. But its training camp...if the Bucs do suck, there will be plenty of time to rip them new ones.

Thank You WDAE and 620/ clear channel for taking action when it was deemed appropriate, and holding these guys to a higher standard than they hold themselves up to.

So I ask BucEm readers.... Who do you like on 620? Hate?

What other station do you listen to?

Please remember we are not attacking people with name calling, name changing, or anything else you wouldnt do if the person was on the other side of the computer monitor, of which they may just be!

Ron and Ian...

are my favorites as they compliment each other as easy going humorists. Ron has this dry yet colorful sense of humor and Becks comes off as loveably naive at times. They don’t have that “I’m right your, you’re wrong” punitive mentality which most sports radio commentators tend to have. I boycott anyone who makes idiotic statements like Bubba and his “I can coach the Bucs to nine or ten wins.”

I concur whole heartedly on Ron and Ian.

I enjoy listening to them because, in part, they don’t make me cringe when they talk to a caller. They generally treat them with respect, unless the caller becomes an ass. Plus, they have fun and discuss non-sports related topics on a limited basis that serves as a nice complement to local sports discussion.

Duemig is an arrogant bastard. I hung out with him after his show the Monday before Super Bowl and introduced him to my wife. He hung out with us for a while, but the pompous side of him reared its ugly head after several drinks and we left. That said… I do agree with alot of what he says… specifically about giving Raheem a chance and that great players make great coaches… with alot of the blame falling on cheapskate ownership.

Sileo is barely worth commenting on. His blind, blanket defense of Bonds and the stupid things he says for shock value typically cause me to listen to Mike & Mike in the morning.

Also, I enjoy listening to the sports attacks by Whitney and Derek Sharpe

both men seem like class guys who offer a little humor and a lighter take on sports.

Oh the Sports attacks are fantastic.

Seriously though, I think Justin is very under-rated on that radio show. He is a future radio star I think.

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

time will only show morris is not head coach material.

you can say we are rebuilding all day but everyone can see clearly that this team from coachs to players are in disarray. thats not rebuilding its clueless. like my football knowledge non existent. bates = bust in tampa.olsen= bust in tampa. both are gone come next season.morris= bust in tampa and time will show this to be true before you know it.

How do you know what coach is a bust???

This is a team lacking talent virtually across the board right now. Horrible scouting/draft picks and cheap free agent reclamation quick fixes has left this roster in a crappy, crappy state. You can have a great coach or a bad coach, but nothing replaces talent on the field. You can’t take horse meat and make filet mignon.

Give the coaches and Dominik time. For goodness’ sakes, you’ve got to let them have a draft to nab some players to try to fit their system. It’s way too early to start saying so-and-so is not going to work out.

It may, but it wont for much longer than 7 weeks, and none of us are qualified to judge those coaches..

based on the play of the Bucs youthful players who were put in the starting roles and told to give it their best.
They have..but but it hasnt been good enough.

You take the best coach in the world and put him in charge of the Bucs and you wont see much difference.

Dont expect Bates to go anywhere, however Olsen could. Still, I think with a full offseason, olsen will implement the offense Morris wanted from the beginning.

So your right, TIME will show….so lets give that Time huh?

Favorite Talk Show Hosts

I’m not really surprised that Silly-O got himself into trouble; dont like to see someone lose their job but he has made other comments in the past that seemed ill advised.
I like Ron and Ian a little better. Being female, I thought all the morning hosts were a little immature in their commentary; all the “skankuary” , “chick sports” , and description of their bathroom habits seem more suited to a bunch of guys going out for beers rather than on a talk show. I do think some of their commentary is interesting though and also sometimes actually entertaining.
The afternoon hosts are an improvement and Steve Duemig has gotten to be my favorite. Sure he can be arrogant but he is generally well informed and has that “dog bite” that makes other hosts seem a little boring sometimes.

I am more of a 1010 listener myself

The negativity on 620 always made me question why the Buccaneers made them the flagship station. I think Mike Pepper over at 1010 did a much better job at covering the Buccaneers. As far as Deumig goes … I run hot and cold on his show …. The negativity he spewed for years about Gruden turned me off to his show completely. I think most of the on air talent at 620 have a job to do and they all do it very well. Their job is to get ratings. The way they go about doing it is by going on air and saying the most outrageous things they can to generate lots of calls and listeners. They carefully orchestrate this dance and it sickens me to listen to it most of the time. To me their station is too similar to ESPN.

I am not pimping for 1010 here but I enjoy their coverage much better and I think JP Peterson is much more enjoyable to listen to than Deumig. I could be biased because I am a Noles fan as well and JP Peterson is the gator haters dream show.
