Josh Freeman named starter for Week 9
In a move that will surprise no one, Josh Freeman has been tabbed as the starter for the Bucs.
The bigger surprise would be if he were removed from that position for any reason other than injury.

Bad Bad move
at 0/7 is a terrible time to bring in a young QB, WHY REALLY, are they going to catch the Saints! No is the answer! Please let Josh and Byron finish this season!

The point is that we won't catch the Saints.
Freeman isn’t being brought in to win, hes being brought in to learn. Next year he will need to win.

I don't mean to laugh
But that pre-season QB battle looks pretty silly now. Plus, fire the offensive coordinator. Yikes!
I hope Josh is a star. Tampa Bay should never be in this position.

If he performs better than Johnson but still not good, is that a good thing? Will there be bust reports if he gets a 75 QB rating?

I just hope Bucs fans will be patient, and not judge Freeman as ANYTHING this season.
Period. I wont anoint him the future if hes good, so dont label him a bust if he stinks. He is going to stink. That is a given.
Expect it.
But if we can run the ball well, we have a chance to have Freeman look good.
Plus, you need to keep Raheem and Olsen RIGHT THERE…you can’t have Freeman with 4 or 5 coordinators in as many years…Like Campbell in Washington, or Alex Smith over in San Francisco. Our own Shawn King had 3 in 3 years too. You cant have that.

They very rarely use stats (or at least ones that matter). They hardly ever break any news, and they will be down 1 customer when my subscription runs out. I can’t believe I paid 20$ extra dollars for shipping on the magazine and then they just discontinue it. How infuriating.

It's about time
Josh Johnson is among the bottom five in the league in passer rating this season. It’s time to see what the kid can do.

Is that a JJ fail or an offense fail
Clayton, AB and K2 have dropped passes which contribute to lower ratings and he is a young (almost rookie) QB throwing the ball up to 50 times in a game. That’s not JJ failing as much as its the coaches failing.

You gotta admit
that J.J. looked like he was in over his head a lot of the time. I never had a moment where I was like “Damn, this kid is going to be great one day”. Most young QBs have flashes like that even when they are performing poorly.
You’re right that the offense didn’t do him any favors though. The whole season is baffling to me at this point. I’m just going to keep watching and hope for the best.
I was just as curious about Johnson as everyone else, but now that I’ve seen what he can bring to the table at this point in his career, I’m glad he has been benched.

What about Freeman?
How do you think it’s going to play out the next few weeks? I mean I know we haven’t really seen a whole lot to go by, but if you had to guess?
by bucfanlostiniowa on Oct 28, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Freeman
is going to have a really hard time. He is going to throw for at least three picks a game, and if they don’t start running the ball more he may take five sacks a game. Hopefully we will see some of those flashes I mentioned earlier from him though. We are stuck with Freeman for the rest of this season and probably all of next season as a starter right now, so all we can do is hope for the best.
You get what you pay for.

What about the
whole “ruin a rookie qb if you start him before he is ready” theory do you buy into that? I for one feel that anybody who fails because they weren’t ready would never have been a starter in the nfl anyway.
by bucfanlostiniowa on Oct 28, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I definitely
think Freeman should have stuck around for his senior year. He just knew that next year there is no way he goes in the first round. He probably made several million dollars more by coming out early, and you can’t fault him for that.
As for ruining rookies, I don’t buy into that. If he has such a fragile psyche that he is going to be ruined by having some bad games then you’re right, he would never make it anyway. Apparently Freeman is pretty mentally tough though, because losing sure didn’t seem to bother him at K State.

He is going to throw Pick 6s, He is going to drop the ball when he is hit, and he is going to take sacks and throw up interceptions.
If he doesnt do half of those things, he is going to be fantastic. He will also throw some nice ones, and some good TDs hopefully too.
It takes years to tell if a QB (or a coach) is good or not.

I find that surprising
Considering him and K2 looked like they would of torn apart about 28 other teams in the league at Philly. If Clayton and Bryant (for the first half) actually showed up to the game, might of had a shootout.
by NewLogic on Oct 28, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Him and K2 looked so great because the Eagles kept blitzing 8. (No rhyme intended)
There’s no reason why he shouldn’t have hit K2 even more with all that blitzing, in fact I remember clearly where he overlooked a wideopen K2 several times.

I think that
a good tight end like Winslow can make a lot of guys look good. Winslow is a great TE when he decides to show up.
I guess he showed some promise but he never really wowed me the way I thought he would. He is an average passer that makes below average reads right now. I was hoping he would amaze me with his athleticism but he never really did. If he could have duplicated that run he had in the preseason then I would have liked to see more, but Freeman is in there now I guess it is a moot point.
You get what you pay for.

I thought he showed those flashes, but when the OL refuses to block, the WRs dont catch the ball
we have no running game to speak of and the coaches dont change their playcalling, what did you expect? I thought he made some nice throws in the Philly game and just needed to improve his reads and decision making. But for a young quarterback with little to no help, I thought he did alright.
It’s clear everyone thinks Ryan, Sanchez, Flacco etc have the tools. But how would they have looked on this team?

All of those factors were working against him
for sure, but they were also all working against Leftwich, and he had more success. I just don’t see the purpose in letting a 3rd string QB start over the kid we are being asked to put all our hopes and dreams into.

You're never going to hear me say
Leftwich had anything more than a poor game against New York, but J.J. didn’t much better in any of his three starts.
I guess I just feel that they should have kept playing Byron until Freeman was ready. At least sticking J.J. in there shut the fans up though, otherwise they would have been clamoring for him all year.
You get what you pay for.
by LeeCaz on Oct 28, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand
But the Giants game was bad and Leftwich had no chance of succeeding if the line was gonna continue to let defenders in like that, so a change had to be made. And since you can’t just go out and find a few new linemen with starting talent, QB was the next best thing.

Honestly, I had a few of those moments LeeCaz,
but they were over three weeks ago (and the TD last sunday).
There is a reason only a few late round QB go on to become something IE Brady, Brad Johnson, etc, and no Im not putting Brad in same boat, but he was a very high round pick, thats all.
Heck, David Logan, RIP, was a stud Nose Tackle for the Bucs for what 8 years? he was a 12th round draft pick. That guy would not even make a roster today.
I think they should up the draft again to 10 rounds.

He did throw up around 50 balls a game,
but although there were drops, I don’t remember 25 of them. JJ’s completion rating is around 50%.
by bucnut1 on Oct 28, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Simms were supposed to be from mechanics
JJ’s were from the line getting pushed in. Then again, I was never a QB.
by NewLogic on Oct 28, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I sort of agree . . .
You’re right, drops were a HUGE part of JJ’s lack of production. However, they only threw the ball 50 times once in his four starts, and that was against Philly. Not being able to throw the ball away and his inability to read the defense was also a huge contributor. Notice how he never checks down to the running backs. That’s because he never gets that far in his progressions. The only time he hits the tight end (Winslow, mostly) is when the play is designed for him.
He’s a good young QB, but a career backup nonetheless. Not that I think Freeman is going to set the world on fire – but at least it’s about time to find out.
Paul Mueller
by Paul Mueller on Oct 28, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He only threw 50 times once, but outside of the Washington game, it erred on the side of pass
Week 4 – 29 drop backs vs 22 runs
Week 5 – 52 drop backs to 18 runs
Week 6 – 25 drop backs to 17 runs
Week 7 – 32 drop backs to 24 runs (includes Freemans snaps)
He may only have hit 50 once, but when an OC is calling more passes than runs for a young guy, thats a problem. It will be the same way with Freeman.
As far as hitting running backs, I dont have targets in front of me but in terms of receptions
Week 4 – 6 to RB/TE, 7 to WR
Week 5 – 5 to RB/TE, 20 to WR (counting K2 as a WR here)
Week 6 – 2 RB/TE, 7 WR
Week 7 – 3 RB/TE, 6 to WR.
I don’t think it’s accurate to say he didn’t get there in his reads. There were times when he scrambled around or bought time to find someone. His ability to read a defense is off, I completely agree, but that happens when you go from playing in a weak conference to playing against the big boys. I don’t think many rookie or young QB’s come into the league with a great ability to read the defense. Everyone loves Sanchez, 5 interceptions. Doesn’t mean he can’t play, means he is going through growing pains and is being allowed to work through them.
It looked like JJ was either told not to run, or he made the decision to not run. His “throwaways” should be scrambles with his talent, but he seemed hesitant. I don’t see how anyone can evaluate him after 4 games and claim to know what we have. Its a quarter of a season in his first NFL action. If we were this quick on the trigger, no one would make it very far. Manning (both of them) were awful their first few games and first year, they turned out alright. Same with Brees, Sanchez is heading that way, Flacco was not spectacular last year, the lists go one.
I dont know if JJ is good enough to start, but to say he defintely cant after 4 games is ridiculous and is the kind of knee jerk reactions that result in complete swings and misses on players. If we do the same thing to Freeman or any other player, its a disgrace.

In fact, here are some numbers to ponder
I took a handful of quarterbacks, the prodigal sons (the Mannings), Favre, Hasselback, and two start immediately rookies (Flacco and Sanchez). Through their first four games, JJ is right in the ball park.
Josh Johnson – 59 for 115 (51.3%) for 649 yards, 4 TD 8 INT
Peyton Manning – 81 for 146 (55.48%) 992 yards, 3 TD, 11 INT
Eli Manning – 39 for 101 (38.61%) 450 yards, 1 TD, 6 INT
Brett Favre – 87 for 132 (65.91%) 933 yards, 4TD, 2 INT
Matt Hasselback – 50 for 114 (51.75%) 637 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT
Joe Flacco – 62 for 106 (58.49%) 603 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT
Mark Sanchez – 63 for 110 (57.27%) 744 yards, 4 TD, 5 INT
Now this is just a small sampling, but I took each players first 4 starts, since that’s all we have to go on with JJ. Outside of Favre, he’s in the ballpark. All of these players made bad decisions early on, it’s what young quarterbacks do.
Does this mean JJ is the next Peyton Manning? Absolutely not. But you can’t write someone off after 4 games. If so, the two Mannings, Sanchez, Flacco, and Hasselback would have been given the heave-ho. Everyone is trying to evaluate JJ on a small sample size.
You are right about one thing, he will be a career back up at this rate. Only being given 4.25 games to show what you have on one of the worst teams in recent NFL memory gave him about a .076% chance to succeed. Tack on the playcalling and drops and that number plummets to .036%.
I have no qualms with saying JJ hasn’t lit the world on fire or needs to improve, but to just push him aside and say he sucks and can’t play is an over reaction. I’d say most of the QB’s on this list have turned out alright, although we don’t know about Flacco and Sanchez yet.

The coaches...
told him not to run. Thats why he seemed so awkward against New England as opposed to past 3 games. They told him to just stay in the pocket and push the ball down field as much as possible. [which was why he seemed to just keep throwing deep] Its also why he would look like he was gonna run and then hed just throw it.
I know they were spying him with a LB too but I think it was more do to the coaches telling him not to.

Round, and Round we go....
When it stops……NO BODY KNOWS! Ah, the sweet memories of riding the Merry-Go-Round as a child are pouring back to my brain. Haha. Well, I stilll like Johnson and the things he did while he was in the game. I couldve done with out the INTS however those will come with any young QB. [some of that was due to the coaches pressuring him to throw down field…even though they were harldy open.] That pass to AB showed me alot. Bad QBs just can’t make a throw like that. Oh well, like Raheem said..hes our career backup so Im sure hes the guy to step back in when Freeman gets injured.
As for Freeman….I never really liked the draft pick. I thought it was a waste. Now is his time to prove fans like me wrong. Good luck to you, and… whatever you do, just make sure to bring a win with your resume. I dont care if that means just handing the ball off all game. Just bring a win. Lets see what hes got!

The buc’s run more then pass, I just hope that the coach can run 60% of the time and we could kill some time on the clock and have our D sitting on the sideline, 40% of passing would be good, I don’t no but its kinda like Baltimore playing style, all I’m saying is I hope our coach don’t give up on the runing plays to early cause it’s killing me just watching them going 3 and out, on passing plays every time that happens I’ll be like da da dam it maaaaan
