A historical season in the making?

There looks to be quite a big separation from the most talented/highest record teams to the least talented/lowest record teams this year.  There have only been two teams in NFL history that have finished the regular season undefeated, and only one finish the entire regular season and post season without a loss.

As we all know, the Bucs were wiped from the record books last year, in a good way.  The 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the only team to go an entire regular season (then 14 games) without a win.  That is, until we were graciously outdone by the 2008 Detroit Lions who went 0-16 to become the first NFL team in history to lose all 16 games in a season.  The Lions last year lost 5 games by a touchdown or less and 3 games by 4 points or less.  The opportunities were there.

Star-divide

That brings us to this years Rams, Titansand our very own Buccaneers.  Currently all three teams are sitting at the zero win mark.  As painful as we have it, I think we are the team of the three with the least amount of complaining to do.  St Louis has lost 17 games in a row and is 4-26 in their last 30 games.  The Titans have gone from Super Bowl favorites after a 13-3 2008 regular season and are now in competition for the number one pick.  The Bucs, well, we all know where we stand.  It's not good, but I don't think it's as bad as these other two teams.

But the question remains, will one or any of these teams go winless one year after we saw a franchise set the record for futility in one season?   Here's a look at the best opportunities for each team on their remaining schedule.

 Titans

Week 8 - Home vs Jacksonville.  Let's face it.  Jax isn't a very strong team.  They were shut out by Seattle who was shut out by Arizona.  The transitive property doesn't work in sports, but this could be a potential win

Week 10 - Home vs Buffalo.  The Bills haven't been a strong team, but have won a few games.  I don't see the Bills posing a huge threat, which means Tennessee could have a shot.

Week 14 - Home vs Rams.  Well here you go.  If neither team has won a game by this point, and if by a miracle they avoid a tie, one team will walk out with a victory.

 Rams

Week 8 - At Detroit.  The Lions have improved, but they still aren't a world beater.  The Rams took Washington to the wire in a 9-7 loss and lost by 3 to the Jags.  This could be a win for the Rams.

Week 12 - Home vs Seattle.  Seattle has some playmakers, but as we saw against Arizona, they can throw up a goose egg.  Plus, you never know if Hasselback will be healthy.

Week 14 - at Tennessee.  As discussed above, someone has to win

 Bucs

Week 10 - at Miami.  I know, I know, Miami can run the ball.  I still think the Bucs have a chance here.  This game should allow the Bucs to run the ball and with both teams running it (a lot), it shortens the game and maybe we get an early turnover and sit on the lead.

Week 13 - at Carolina.  We came close once, though it was at home.  We at least know we can play with them for three quarters.  I'm hoping by the 4th quarter of this game that Jim Bates realizes the game plan of Fox and company.

Week 17 - Home vs Atlanta.  If Atlanta has the playoff spot secure and sits some players, we might win.  I don't think we beat them at full strength but maybe we catch them looking ahead.  It's pretty sad when I resort to this.

There you go. Any team can win on any Sunday (or Monday), but if I had to predict a few games for each team, there they are.  What do you think, how many teams will go winless in 2009.

If St. Louis has a potential win against the Hawks

don’t we then? I also think we can win vs the Jets. Pending Mark Sanchez looks like he has the past few weeks.

St Louis has them at home. We are at Seattle

West coast team travelling East, playing early (1 PM game Im guessing). We head out there doesnt seem so promising.

You are gutsy for ever betting on the Bucs this season.

Is that what its called ? lol

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

They are just my rough projections. I didn't look at historical matchups, how teams are playing, who is healthy

Just went by what we know now.

Hopefully something drastic will change....

over this next 2 weeks and a win will become more likely but so far with JJ as QB the offense has basically only been good for 1 TD a game. That doesn’t give a team very much of a chance at all for a win unless the Defense can do at least enough to hold the opponent to a field goal or less. The highest score since JJ at QB was 21 against the Panthers. Again, Only 1 TD by the offense, pick 6 by the D and 6 by the special teams which is not something that can be counted on each game.

Just maybe Delhomme (if not benched by then) will throw 2 or 3 int for 6 against the Bucs and the special team score again to give the chance for a win but then again how likely is that.

I not only think that the Titans could win this week....

but I have a feeling that the Rams could actually beat the Lions for their possible 1st win of the season. That just leaves the Bucs winless if that happens.

Perhaps "parity" has dissapeared for a few years.

The amount of bad and just flat out uncompetitive teams is staggering. Then you have the top of the line teams that are beating the teams they are supposed to (and by a large margin). Check out the scores from this last weekend: lots of blowouts by good teams shitting on terrible teams.

Next year with no salary cap/floor what will happen then? The good teams get better while the bad teams get worse? Might as well just have the good teams play each other or we have a college football regular season without any of the BCS excitement (Florida playing troy).

I don't disagree with your point, but please refrain from using profanity in the comments as is stated in the TOS

Next year is a huge unknown. I think, with no new CBA and an impending lockout, a lot more owners than we think may try to save some coin.

I imagine there will be many 1 year deals

that only certain teams can really afford next year. It’s the perfect opportunity for the Cowboys, Redkins, and the Giants to buy a championship. If the NFL was to ever turn into the unfair mess of the MLB, I think I would seriously lose interest in the league. I like parity, I don’t like dynasties, unless it’s my team of course.

But to the topic, I think the Bucs will get a win eventually, cause there will be a team that just over looks us and doesn’t show up to play. I doubt this is the worst team we’ve ever had, and except for the first 2 season with high school players, we’ve won games.

I think we can win 1 game

Simply because our (i can’t believe i am going to say this) secondary has been on fire (well kinda) i mean one of these days, Talib and TJax will return a pick to the house, while cadillac williams will bust a huge 60 yarder to the house; i just hope Freeman (whom i think will start now, even though i don’t want him to) doesn’t turn the ball over….

That week 14 game Rams Vs Titans used to be called the REPUS Bowl!

Repus is Super spelled backwards, and that matchup was always the Furthest game from a Superbowl you could get.
Bucs had a couple of those, and usually won them.

This piece goes good with what I am writing for tomorrow. Its all about scheduling, and you’ll see what I mean..tomorrow.

Nice work BucWild!

The bucs are looking for a record

that can never be broken and here it is the only team to post two win less seasons!

by bucfanlostiniowa on Oct 27, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know i'm the last.....

But i still have hope that the bucs will at least win one game this year. It may be a horrible year for the bucs but i have to stay somewhat optomistic about somthing.

Way to go Army! Keep up the faith!

IN a few years this team will be 11-5 or better, and everyone will be on the wagon. only the people in this bunch here today are the real fans.
Even if your negative, thats because your a real fan.

Absolutely...

I cant wait until the game comes where the team surprises all of us and plays competitively against a team they are not supposed to!

Can't wait for the throwback uniforms

Gonna take my camera and a lot of pictures too, cause who knows how long it will be before we get to see those again. If I can, maybe I’ll post a couple after we beat GB.

Still

I think that believing your team will be the only winless team is a bit much. Especially when the Rams have the worst losing streak in the league, and if they don’t win soon, in the history of the league.

Yes they are getting close...the Rams are..

Currently 17? only 9 more to go!
