He ran his way out of town, will anyone else follow?

The NFL Trade deadline is much different than other sports.  There is usually very little action and it's due to a few circumstances.  The timing of the deadline, where typically speaking, teams still have over half their season and very few teams are eliminated from playoff contention (save this year).

We've already seen Gaines Adams get the boot, are there any other players in the NFL about to switch addresses?  The deadline is 4 PM EST today.

Feel free to discuss some reasonable trade scenarios in the comments section.

Trade Ruud?

If there’s a market for him (maybe Chicago, but they may not want to part with any more picks) see if anyone would bite for a 2nd-3rd round pick. Thats really the only one I can see, they aren’t giving Michelle Clayton away.

by cambi1 on Oct 20, 2009 9:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If we gave up Ruud, we better do better than a 2nd or 3rd

This scheme may not fit him as well, but he can still play ball. I think we need high return for him if we let him go.

I may be crucified for saying this, but I hope Bryant gets dealt.

I dont disagree that Bryant should be dealt

but it will leave our WR paper thin for the rest of the season, which would stunt Freemans growth some.

I do want to trade Clayton.

Deal Clayton

The only thing about trading Clayton is what we are expecting in return. If some desperate team needs a WR and gives us a third rounder, I’m sold. I just don’t think we’ll get more than one or more 2nd days for him.

by LinuxTX on Oct 20, 2009 10:16 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I would think that the return for Clayton would seriously be a 6th rounder.

The big road block is his contract. Who in their right mind will assume that contract?

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 20, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll take a 6th.

Right now a 7th round pick is as productive as Clayton has been. You take away the first game, and Stroughter has been more consistent than has 80.

We take a huge cap hit

but get rid of him, but another team has to pay him and part with a pick. Where does he best fit? San Fran and their short route offense? I have no idea who would want him.

That contract made no sense.

It may be one of the worst decisions to this point (this season) from Dominik / Glazers.

Not sure if Niners would make that move after settling with Crabtree. Reports are he is starting this week. Dolphins, maybe?

I just don't know who wants a high paid receiver who catches 60% of the passes in his direction

(FYI, that stat was just off the top of the head, no idea if it’s accurate). I just don’t see a demand for him.

Im not for dealing Ruud or AB. AB is a playmaker. Wait till the end of the year with both.

You need to see if Ruud fits in with the system, or if we even KEEP the system next year.
Plus he is in line to have a monster stat year for tackles, and offseason when players dont play, they are all great players because the best plays are on everyones mind. AB, same thing. Wait and see what happens. You can always franchise him again if you have to to work a good trade. I think he stays next year, as the Bucs give him a good long term contract. They were only looking to see if he would go back to his old ways. He’s not.

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

by Niko Houllis on Oct 20, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We can't trade Ruud or AB after year end.

If you think one (or both) is walking, you make the move now. Once the season is over they won’t be dealt. Both are impending free agents. There is no way we franchise QB again. That would be a cap number of over $11MM a year for him. He hasn’t earned it and that’s assuming we can work out a deal with him.

Trade Graham?

I don’t want our former Mr. August turned fantasy football legend to leave us, but we have too much depth and money in Caddy and Ward. He has been under-utilized this year even when not injured.

I can think of a few teams that need another good back. Browns, Patriots, Lions, Texans, St Louis.

by LinuxTX on Oct 20, 2009 10:32 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I could see them moving a RB

I personally don’t want to though. We have no idea if Caddy is coming back and both Graham and Ward are fairly cheap for starting running backs. Their value to the team both financially and as a player would benefit the Bucs to keep.

yes buc great point

imo it would be bad to move any rb cause we dont know where caddy is now. he could get hurt(hopefully not) in any game lets see him finish a year first.

A question for anyone who can answer (i.e. I dont feel like reading the CBA this morning)

When a player is traded, his contract follows him, but does the bonus money get accelerated and hit the cap? I would think so (Gaines Adams for example), but want to make sure.

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 20, 2009 10:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Looked it up in the CBA

Bonus is accelerated.

There’s also some very different rules as far as free agency and who can sign in the last capped year and first uncapped year.

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 20, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No CBA next year

Next year is going to be without a salary cap, so I’m at a loss on how this will change everything.

As of now, the bonus is prorated in the salary cap and the Bucs have to tack on the remaining signing bonus to their cap if they trade/cut the player.

by LinuxTX on Oct 20, 2009 10:51 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

The last capped year (this year) and uncapped year (next year)

have COMPLETELY different rules in accounting and free agency.

But you’re right (as am I) that the bonus is accelerated when the player is removed from the roster.

With Adams it was $11MM, and if Clayton goes, that would have more dead money hit our cap.

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 20, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But since ab is one year and ruud is at the end

Wouldn’t there be little to no bonus left?

I really don’t know… It’s an interesting situation that’s for sure. Hope the right man is making the choice.

by Niko Houllis on Oct 20, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Those two wouldn't have much if any acceleration

Clayton would, as would any player with up front money paid and multiple years left on his deal.

www.bucem.com - SBNation's source for all things Buccaneer

by Buc Wild on Oct 20, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Im afraid we're stuck with Clayton for some time.

Thing about Ruud depends on if DC Bates stays or not, because I dont think Ruud is the type of LB for his system. Too small. Hes a perfect Middle guy for Tampa Two as he is great at dropping back into coverage (remember that pick in chicago last year?) .

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

by Niko Houllis on Oct 20, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ruud would leave a huge hole

And we don’t have the personel to fill it from the roster. I can see a high LB draft pick (1st or 2nd) next year if we move Ruud.

What position are we looking to help when hurt the middle of our defense like that? Is there any specific player/picks you think would help our team more than Ruud?

by LinuxTX on Oct 20, 2009 11:45 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

just think of barry and ruud in the back feild

thats a pretty solid lb core right there. we need some front line help so i dont know

i believe berry is the best or top 3 best player going in this draft. i think if we pass him up we could be passing on a pro bowler. yes he has,nt even played a game in the nfl and im calling him a probowler.he dont get hurt and puts the woop down.

Trade clayton

If we trade Clayton we can have some of the money left from his contract. Dam it would be nice if we trade Clayton with boldin from Arizona, and a 6 or 7 round draft man that wold be sweet

If the Cardinals gave up Boldin for Clayton and a 6th or 7th rounder

I would throw feces at all of my co-workers. There is no way they part with Boldin for that. No way

I think he gets what you meant

And the Cardinals wouldn’t give up Boldin for Clayton and a 5/6th rounder. Barring a miracle, that’s never going to happen.

Clayton and a 2nd/3rd is closer to reality.

What ever the coach do I just hope it’s worth it cause if we trade some one why not pick up a DT it would help a dam much on D and we will get sh!t cracking

Im fine waiting until the draft to get a DT.

I would assume it’s on TV, just like every other game.

If you live elsewhere, you’ll have to check the CBS distribution maps.

Well, seeing as how you are in Oakland I can't tell you if the Bucs game will be on TV

Here’s a hint. Go to either TVguide.come or go to your cable box and go to Sunday and look yourself. Go to program guide and hit the right button until you get to Sunday at 1 PM. That should answer it.

Or you can go to CBS/FOX and look for a distribution map. The internet has some wonderful information out there.

Also, hit the reply button if you’re responding to someone, makes it easier to follow.

I can feel your pain

I’m in Texas and the only Bucs game I’ve had the priviledge of watching this year was against the Cowboys.

The way things are going this year, unless we get a high profile rookie in the draft, the Buccaneers will have no national games in 2010. May have to break down and get DirecTV.

by LinuxTX on Oct 20, 2009 11:30 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Do they have DirectTV in your area?

There is also this new thing called Red Zone which I think is 6.00 for a Sunday of nothing but redzone plays.

Here’s some interesting uncapped year news…

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d808736ba&template=with-video&confirm=true

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80864e15&template=with-video&confirm=true

“Currently, a team can put either a franchise tag (average of the top five salaries at his position) or a transition tag (average of the top ten salaries at his position) on any one player on the club to protect the team from losing the unrestricted free agent. If the NFL gets to an uncapped year in 2010 and 2011, teams will have use of one franchise tag and two transition tags. So not only would none of the young players with less than six years of service be free, but now the top three players who are eligible for free agency on a roster can be protected.”

The Bucs can simply tag Ruud if they’re unable to sign him to a long-term deal. He’s a great player, but I doubt there’s many teams out there willing to give up 1 or 2 first-round picks for him.

The same could be said of Bryant, but let’s be honest…a clean break via trade or a long-term deal would be a much better option than tagging him yet again. He’s already too expensive for his output currently.

Personally, I’d like to see Ruud become a fixture of the defense’s future, along with Talib. Pick up a DL playmaker (Suh) in the first round, and use all those other picks to find some serviceable defense parts and add depth. Receivers can be found in FA or later in the draft…look where Bryant came from in the first place.

Dealing Bryant to a team like the Ravens, who are actively seeking a WR, might be best. Pick up a quality draft pick and call it a season…it’s obvious the Bucs aren’t playing more than 16 games this year anyway. It’s just as possible for the Ravens to miss the playoffs than make them after the trade, so the pick could fall in a more advantageous place than if he were traded to a sure-fire playoff team.

Yawn

The trade deadline in the NFL hardly ever makes much noise… Maybe a player or 2 moves but it’s never like the MLB deadline. Why do some of you believe that teams would take the Bucs trash (Clayton, Bryant) off their hands, for high draft picks no less? You are the same ones that offer me your 3 worst players for Adrian Peterson in fantasy football aren’t you?

I think maybe Ruud is worth more than a 2nd-3rd round pick, but I think thats all we’d get for him. He’s not a pro-bowler, just a solid player, and that usually dosent command much more than a 2-3, espicially not ones with contracts coming up soon.

Apples and oranges

He’s only in year 3, the year most players start to break out… And yes he’s shown flashes of talent in that mediocrity at times… this may be win/win for both teams… I wouldnt let Bates coach my tecmo bowl teams, much less develop talent- but Marinelli may feel he can turn this guy into something yet- Ruud is in year 5, and about to become a free agent- who in their right mind (we’re not counting Marc Dominik) would give a #1 pick for 2 months of a slightly above average average ILB?

by cambi1 on Oct 20, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

When you trade for a guy who is expiring

you usually work out a contract extension also. So it wouldn’t be two months for him. In the right system, Ruud has shown he is a great playmaker. Derrick Brooks wouldn’t have been the same player in a different system. In a 3-4 he would have been alright, but the COver 2 fit Brooks perfectly. Same with Ruud.

You asked why were getting excited when trade deadline in NFL is usually boring..

So I explained why…Tampa Bay is looking to unload some players, so its exciting for us because there are rumours of action going down.

There was ONE flash of talent out of Gaines Adams this year, the first qtr of the Washington Game. Thats it. two game the guy does not even have a stat!

He regressed this year, the year he was told to step it up!
Dominik took Angelo to the cleaners.

Deadline came and went,

as usual without a whimper. Nobody wants to give up draft picks for bad, overpriced players on the league’s worst team.

And yes I was surprised at what Adams got in return, but I wouldnt be surprised if they can extract more out of him than Jim Bates. Win-Win!

by cambi1 on Oct 21, 2009 10:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

IDK, as much as it pains me to say this...

Ian Beckles was right about him..
The guy has no mean streak to him. I realize Rod Marinelli is the best, but I would be really surprised if GA turns into anything more than a 4 sack a year guy.
