The rollercoaster ride that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took us on another ride today. Starting out looking like Superbowl contenders, the Bucs somehow managed to turn what should have been a 14-0 lead into a 7-7 tie, and gave up 21 consecutive points before fighting back in extreme fashion to tie the game in the 4th quarter. By the time the game finished, it was a comedy of errors, and the team showed no matter how much heart it has, it lacks what it needs to get the job done.

Star-divide

Both Carolina running backs went over 100 yards each, as the Panthers took the ball and marched down the field on a Bucs defense that was helpless to stop them.

Another culprit today was the regressed play of Josh Johnson, who had many leaping on board the J.J. wagon; instead in all likelihood the team is one game away from the first start of Josh Freeman in 3 weeks vs the Packers.

Despite the erratic play of Johnson, the Bucs heroically got back into the game with a franchise best 97 yard Kick Off Return for a touchdown, then the defense got into the act by getting pressure on Jake Delhomme causing him to throw a pick 6 to Tanard Jackson

Pressure is sure to mound on rookie head coach Raheem Morris, despite the team showing no sign of quitting. Next Week, The Bucs head to London, England to play the Patriots, before the Bye week, and a date with the Packers in Orange  Uniforms.

We definitely need to take a look at DTs

Whether on other teams we can maybe get a good deal or currently employed ones. Stuff the runs early in the game and that last drive doesn’t happen. I like Hovan, he just seems to get overpowered a lot.

This is an excellent point NewLogic...

there is no way we can hope to draft a whole line for next year. But you have to draft the best defensive player in the draft next year, and go out and get the best lineman who is out there in FA

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

Guys its really simple..

This team is just bad. Coach Morris may, or may not be a good coach, but no one could take bad players and win with them.
His message, about not riding emotional rollercoasters, and playing till the end, are good messages. They will sink in to the good players, and the bad ones will be replaced by better ones, in time.

I hate losing as much as anyone else. Ive had more than my share of these types of seasons.

You really have two choices though..you can jump ship, or you can stay on and watch the team get built in front of your eyes. Everyone in here who is here now, will be remembered for being the real Bucs fans!

16 runs for a RB who was over 4 yards per carry.

And a defense who couldnt stop the run to save their life when they KNEW it was coming. Not pretty

Yea. I've been liking some of the things Olsen has done

But I’m not liking the play calling itself. It’s like they are trying to be a pass first, run second team when it was said we were supposed to be a run heavy team. I can understand how we get away from the run in games like NY, Dallas, and Philly. But we were never out of it in this game, yet we have 25 runs, with 8 of them being from JJ.

by NewLogic on Oct 18, 2009 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why....

was it that there was absolutely no way to stop the run on that last drive….That was rediculous. I mean I noticed the whole game Caronlina was running very well. But 16 in a row with no sign of slowing it down is rediculous…

by RuudAwakening on Oct 18, 2009 5:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We did well on the first drives

We scored and stopped their run in the backfield. Why couldn’t we reduplicate the same idea? I could be wrong but it seems as if Olsen is trying to be too creative. Maybe afraid that the D. Coord will figure out the play calling so he changes it up before the other guy can figure out how to stop.

I don’t know what happened defensively?

by miracles83 on Oct 18, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I noticed the same thing...

On Olson’s play calling that is. Just like after the 20 yd TD run to the outside left by Caddy, the vast majority of the runs were up the middle or off tackle runs called. Which I though clearly did not work as well as getting to the outside. I don’t know though, it was just an exciting/frusterating game to watch….

by RuudAwakening on Oct 18, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I froze my butt off and didn’t get a sun burn, and it was almost an entertaining game.

The tackling (or lack of) was horrible again today, and the inexperience of JJ lost us the game. Gilmore’s false start on the 4th and 1 hurt. Why was he even in there? Still not happy with the play calling. And I hope Dante Wesley gets suspended a long with his big fine. There’s no place for dirty players, and if the Panthers had any class, they’d cut him.

And I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen that many no shows at the stadium, I’ve been a season ticket holder since 93, and never remember seeing that many empty seats.

by bucnut1 on Oct 18, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gilmore is our best blocking TE

So if you plan on running on 4th and 1, he’d definitely be in there. Total mistake on his part to move.

Any guesses of whether we’ll be better then this or worse?

I think they should play Freeman

The fans in London want to see what he can or can not do as bad as we do, is there really any sense in playing JJ anymore this season?

by bucfanlostiniowa on Oct 18, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His start if very close

Just a judgement call of whether you start him in another country or wait until after the Bye.

After they bye week makes sense

Gives him two weeks to get ready for gameplan.

play Freeman for 3 games and compare his numbers to JJ's

it’s the only way to end the argument… I personally feel that Freeman is not needed, that JJ should be the now and future- but Freeman is going to get his shot… for better or worse.

by nittsallgood on Oct 18, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Leftwich

should have been given more time that being said If you are going to bench him why bring in the future “back up” why not play the future “starter” especially in a lost season like this?

by bucfanlostiniowa on Oct 18, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because

We brought Leftwich here to win from the start, and we didn’t. Freeman wasn’t ready yet so they let JJ get his time, especially since Leftwich would of gotten killed in Philly. Lets JJ get experience and lets everyone get a chance to see what he’s made of. Allows us to see exactly what we have sitting on the bench. Emergency scenario is we have someone very promising (which he has shown flashes of) just incase “Project Freeman” tanks. Best scenario, we have to starters on our team and can deal one off to another team. Lets not think about worst case scenario.

Freeman will get his time soon enough, but for now we’re with JJ.

I'm confused why

The Bucs slowed the run most of the game but let Carolina steamroll the front four on that last 8 minute drive?

I noticed that early on they got other backs involved in stopping the run, and it just wasn’t there in the same capacity on that last drive.

I understand it doesn’t fit in with the scheme, but when the game is on the line, why not send linebackers, corners, whoever you can find into the back field to stop Williams and Stewart?

Also, bright spots= Talib’s coverage of a lot of the leagues premiere receivers this year? Jackson was silent last week, and I didn’t hear a peep out of Smith this week…

Nice one BibleDinosaurs,

When you look back at the MNF game last year, they did the same thing to us.
I think its because our line is still too small.
Just imagine what this defense would do with 3 stud linemen playing along with Wilkerson.
Sabby, Im not sure about, but everyone else is improving.

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

by Niko Houllis on Oct 18, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well...ive been thinking about this...

and i know we need a DT…however. I did like Sabbys potential, before I saw both Taylor Mayes and Eric Berry play. Now, idk what the chances/history are for TWO safetys to go in the first round. But im assuming they are high. If we could get ONE of them [i personally dont care which one since theyve proven to me that they can play and have both shown leadership] early in the 2nd, then I’d get a DT 1st round. HOWEVER if BOTH are projected to go in 1st Round, then i don’t see why we shouldnt use our first round on Mayes and still get nice steal at DT in the 2nd.

With T. Jack and either Mayes or Berry back there…thats a pretty solid Saftey Core that can help in both run and pass

by Luckydabney7 on Oct 19, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sorry...

meant to say the chances would seem LOW that they both go in the first.

by Luckydabney7 on Oct 19, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

considering you almost NEVER see a safety go in the first round ever,

Id say chances are good the Bucs will get one with the second round pick they acquired.
Im going to say this every time I say anything about the draft…I cant believe were talking about the draft after 6 weeks.

If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

by Niko Houllis on Oct 19, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

but Mays and Berry are probably the two best safeties to come out of college since Sean Taylor. They will both go in first round in my opinion. It would be sweet to get one of them with our first pick of the second round though. It will probably be the 33rd or 34th overall. I wonder if we or the Rams are going to manage to scratch out a win before the end of the season.

by LeeCaz on Oct 19, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they will both go in the first

Most mock drafts I have seen have them both going in the top twenty (mock drafts are silly at this point anyway). They also have us picking DT in first round. If we could get Suh from Nebraska or McCoy from Oklahoma with the first pick then it would be a tough decision. Suh is a beast.

by LeeCaz on Oct 19, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Suh has Bucs gear already somewhere!

by Niko Houllis on Oct 19, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ya mock draft is almost meaningless..

to a point. Obviously it determins talent but the draft never really goes that way. So IF we do pick up a DT in the 1st round then i really hope Berry falls to us in the 2nd Round. [Im assuming Mayes would go first]. Hell, Bucs are talking about trying to get even more draft picks under their belt so who knows…we could get both in the first if they play their cards right

by Luckydabney7 on Oct 19, 2009 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

but you’ve got remember that they are going to have to address the WR issue at some point early on too cuz Bryant is most likely out of here.

The silver lining...

Since the Bucs (right or wrong…I think wrong) drafted a quarterback last season, they can focus the first round draft pick on one of our major needs, the defensive line. If they keep losing, having a high enough pick to get the right man for the job is a lock.

If they’re lucky, they’ll win the Suh-weepstakes. The University of Nebraska has already provided the Buccaneers with a great asset in Barrett Ruud. It’s time to make a return visit to Lincoln and pick up Ndamukong Suh.

He’s a game changer in every facet…he stops the run, he has a high enough motor to fight off double teams and make plays in the backfield. He has footwork that is downright uncanny for a DT, and he’s able to run down qbs (which he did in the open field against Texas Tech last weekend) despite his size. He leads Nebraska in tackles, tackles for loss, qb hurries and pass breakups, and is agile enough to collect four INTs during his tenure with the Huskers, two of which he took to the house.

Like it or not, Bucs fans are going to see more of the same as this season progresses. If there’s a single bright spot in the near future, it’s the potential to pick up a DT that will one day be a HoF’er. Suh has that ability…I liken him to a well-conditioned Warren Sapp, without all the character flaws.

Thank You for your evaluation of Suh.

Ive heard similar. I think we are a lock to get him , already, if he comes as advertised.

The reason we took Talib over Jenkins was because Talib proved to have ball hawking abilities.

Some guys just have a knack for the ball. College tendencies should never be overlooked.

There's no mistaking it...we suck

We played a 1 win team at home, got a score on defense and a score on special teams and we still lost by a TD.

The only positive I can find is that we could have a very good young secondary developing. If we could only get a pass rush.

how is JJ responsible for this loss?

For all of you complaining that we only ran Caddy 16 times or that JJ lost us the game need to realize what happened in the 4th quarter. The offense barely touched the ball in the 4th because of the pick-6 by Jackson and the KO return for TD by Sammy… The defense was on the field a lonnnnng time in the 4th. This is a bad defense to begin with, if you multiply the fact that we have trouble stopping the run against Carolina traditionally, and the d was probably gassed from having to be on the field… I don’t even want to see Josh Freeman, ever… if anyone thinks that JJ is not the future is foolish. The kid could be Donovan McNabb if we gave him time to develop. He is smart, is a film rat,and is toolsy. Freeman is guaranteed to get his chance because of the money and that sucks. He was a waste of a draft pick.

by nittsallgood on Oct 18, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

First of all, excellent point about the defense being on the field the whole time in the 4th.

I agree with EVERYTHING you say about J.J., however, he regressed a bit today. Today he looked a little more like the J.J. that played at Washington, than the J.J. that played at Phily.

Were not coaches, we dont get coaches tape. We dont know if receivers werent getting open, but we do know that wasnt the problem in Washington.

There is a reason the man was picked so low in the draft. Donavan McNabb was a legit College Prospect coming out of Syracuse. No comparison.

Time will tell, but if you feel we are wrong to say anything bad about J.J., because he hasnt had the time to prove himself, the you have to really say the same thing about Josh Freeman, who we have not even SEEN yet. you cant have a double standard on this. I am very curious to see how this plays out over the next year and rest of this one.

My season tickets are right next to the visitors tunnel. Mr Wesley got an earful when he went in during half time with his team mates. I was hoping the officials would make him take that walk of shame alone before resuming game play. He had a lot of drunk pissed fans in that section about to tell him “this Buds for you”. I will say from a fan stand point it was nice for the crowd to stop bickering about this and that when it comes to team issues and to unite for a few brief moments again as Bucs fans.

You need depth and accumulating as many picks across the board is better than banking it all on a few guys

Plus, the higher the pick, the higher the pay.

ahhhh...I remember these years.

Those good old days, Vinny, Mark carrier, Craig Erickson, Lonnie Martz, Ect. Allthough I watched and prayed one day they would have a winning season, got teased in school wearing the orange and red, Bucco Bruce, which to this day I still Love and wear. But I was saying I feel like it ment more for me to watch the games even if they lost. After winning the superbowl. It hasn’t been the same since. I really don’t feel as bad as I did prior to the super bowl. I feel like the accomplishment was accomplished. I know for a fact I’m always and for ever will be a Bucs fan. for the love of god I was the only guy who lives in chicago and and loves the bucs, although I have seen more Bucs fans throught the years more so after winning the superbowl. But all those years when the bucs were in the Central Divsion. All those losing years and I stuck with them. Someone please tell me, Is it normal not want to follow the the team as much as before? I still care and want them to win.Just not so much this year. I just don’t KNow what it is. I just don’t like the coach and the cheapiness of the owners. I feel like they wanted to win a superbowl to suck and the fans in and say "see we care " then put out so and so years after winning the big show to get that green in our pockets, just to see it go to that god forsaken sport in Europe. Always and forever will be a Bucs fan….just not this year???

They are certainly going to have to lower ticket prices

next year if they want the seats to be somewhat full. I’m not paying $100 to see my favorite team get thrashed by twenty points. Why should I pay good money to see a team that has owners who won’t pay good money to field a competitive team?

Black outs are going to suck, but they are coming unless something changes soon. I love the Bucs, but I’m not wasting my money to go to a sporting event in which the outcome is a foregone conclusion. I don’t expect many other people will either.

Redtribe14, I find this happens alot to me too...

Ive been a die hard Bucs fan since 1979. I think when they changed uniforms, it took something out of me, but not much. I love the new uniforms though, they have really grown on me. They are not even NEW anymore!

Also, I could have cared less the Bucs had a losing season in 2003, so imagine how the Bucs felt! Its no wonder they had a let down year. But then after 2004…I got interested again. Because we started losing again…and people stopped saying the Bucs are good….

If the idea of watching old Bucs games on DVD interests you, email me.

Niko....

Its just weird and hard to explain isn’t it. But its just maybe that know im married and have a kid, so that it takes away from the guy sports and bar thing you know, which I still try to get out but its not their this year, years before it was. I really do miss the orange and red the ones that got updated in 92 and got the orange pants. And Bucco got a bit bigger on the helmet. I just think in my opion that that logo is the best in all sports. there is just some thing about it. This is how I came to love this team. When I was growing up in chicago burbs. I was in grammer school in the 80’s, and those mini football helmets that you got from the quarter machines at the local grocery stores. Well collecting them back them was the thing. So I remember, trading one of my eagles helmets cause I had two to get that one, because I just loved the logo. Then when I showed it to one of my friends, he laughed and said, tampa bay sucks. Why did you get that. So I told him, there is just something about this logo. And I since then loved the underdog and followed them through thick and thin. You should have seen what I went through when they were in the Central Divison and I used to go to the games. I alone the only one wearing a Vinny testaverde Jersey. all the booos and garbage that was tossed at me. But yeah I’d love to see some vintage games. One of my friends accutally ended up playing for Tampa. You may know him by the name of Courtney Hawkins #85. I have his Jersey and helmet at my house with pics after games.
