Breaking News - Gaines Adams Traded
Gaines Adams, the 2007 first round draft pick (#4) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has been traded to the Chicago Bears for a 2010 2nd round selection.
After a pretty positive second half of his rookie year, Gaines regressed in 2008, registering roughly the same numbers in double the starts. He would fall even further behind the curve in 2009, registering 1 sack in 5 starts.
He will be added to a Bears defensive line that has two solid starters, and should be a contributor as a rotational pass rusher. The questions that will be asked are, did the Bears give up too much, and if Gaines performs in the future, did the Bucs give up too early? This one will be looked at by Bucs fans for years to come if he somehow turns it around.
More on the story, including how it happened, after the break.
Here's the rundown of the story originally coming into existence.
I'm running on an unconfirmed source right now, but it appears the Bucs have traded DE Gaines Adams to the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed draft pick.
I'll confirm and add more as I hear it. Remember, at this point, it's unconfirmed.
Update #1 - Now listed as an ESPN story. Not too much info right now, but here it is .
I'm not too surprised at this, but it does get one thing out in the open, it's not about where you were drafted, it's about what you've done. He'll leave the Bucs after just over two years with 13.5 sacks. I find it hard to believe that we've given up on a first rounder after 29 starts. Here's hoping the return we got is stellar. Seems still fairly early to give up on Gaines, or any 2007 first rounder. Without knowing what the return is, it's hard to estimate what type of deal it is, but this is another high pick that has been removed from the team. Dexter Jackson, a second rounder and Gaines Adams, a first rounder, have both been jettisoned.
I'm guessing it's a first day pick with escalators, otherwise, I'm not sure why you give him up right now. Getting back a late day pick after the bonus check has been written seems fairly foolish to me.
Update #2 - I'm hearing we traded Gaines for a second round pick. This makes sense as it's more than we probably would have expected. So while we lose a first rounder, we gain a pick that should be a player who helps our team immediately. I still don't agree with the short time he was given to get his game up to speed, but the time for pondering his future is gone.
I had assumed we received a 4th rounder with escalators to a 3rd based on playing time and was pretty indifferent about that, but getting a second rounder for Gaines Adams seems like a win. If nothing else, it removes a distraction, some expectation and gives the Bucs another chip to build on in a deep draft next year. I feel pretty good about the deal with the return being what it is, but I wonder, is he the last to go this year?
I wish Gaines Adams well in Chicago. Maybe a fresh start is what he needs.
On another note, here are the first and second rounders since 2002
Dewayne White - gone
Michael Clayton - Ugh
Cadillac Williams - stay healthy and we're set
Barrett Ruud - very solid
Davin Joseph - beast, most of the time
Jeremy Trueblood - a false start waiting to happen
Gaines Adams - gone
Arron Sears - get well soon young man
Sabby Piscitelli - has tools, doesnt know how to use them
Aqib Talib - developing CB
Dexter Jackson - gone.
Not a good track record. I'm sure at some point next week, we'll do a look back at the draft.
Gaines is gone with an unexpected return. If Gaines performs well, the Bears will look like they did the right thing. What makes the trade even more surprising, is the Bears already traded away a good amount of picks for Jay Cutler. Seems they are taking the "build through the draft" talk as rubbish. I'll be keeping an eye on Adams the rest of the year and next year to see what we let go. If he stays on course as he was playing this year, Dominik will look like a genius. If Adams turns into the next Reggie White, this will be another mis-step for the Bucs.
What do you think? Did the Bucs get enough back? Did they trade him too early?

Gaines Adams has regressed as a player.
He had one good quarter vs the redskins, a team the Panthers got 5 sacks on.
I applaud Raheem Morris, and Mark Dominik, or whomever was responsible, for taking action. This sends a clear message to those like Michael Clayton. Perform, or your gone!
Bravo Bucs.
As a person, Ive heard NOTHING but nice things about Gaines Adams. This is about him as a player. I listened to his interview last week, and he seems like a very good person. I too wish him the best in Chicago. If anyone can get greatness out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli.
Thank You Glazers for no Blackouts. Please buy some FAs in 2010.

Fantastic News!
I never thought we would have gotten a 3rd Round pick for him. He also may have a chance to excel in Chicago, not only under Marinelli as Niko mentioned but with an exceptional DLine to take pressure off of him.

Well the change of location was needed for him.
Its obvious he was done here. He was told to get double digit sacks and he goes how many games without even making an appearance in the Stat line?
I think he went three games with NO STATS.
He is a complete bust and Im glad this regime is removing players who do not perform. Now we know why Figures was brought in.
Im curious to see which Styles White plays now… hopefully he will take advantage of his new starting role if they give it to him.
IMO, only Wilkerson is worthy of a starting job.
If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

Alright, I'm tired up updating the story
I’m extremely surprised that he is gone and even more surprised at what we got back. Production to date did not dictate a 2nd rounder, but perhaps the Bears think they can help him turn the corner. It’s their pick, they can do what they want with it, but I will now be rooting against Chicago every chance I get so the Bucs have a better pick.
I figured we might make some moves, and I knew it would be shedding players, not bringing them in, but he is not one I saw leaving this early. It seems that time limits have been shortened on coaches and players to perform. 2.3 years is a short time to give someone to produce. I completely agree with the deal, I’m just surprised that they moved on already.
I would like to know how the offer came about, but maybe those things are best left without being known.
I can’t help but think this isn’t the last trade, or attempt at a trade we’ll see this year.

Holy Hell - from pewterreport
The Buccaneers are expected to try to deal more players by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., which is the NFL trading deadline. Among the players that could be on the trading block because of their experience and potential trade value, include wide receivers Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton and middle linebacker linebacker Barrett Ruud.

I don't mind seeing Clayton on there. Bryant is somewhat expected as he is an expiring deal
and you’d rather get something for him than allow him to walk for free, but Ruud? Maybe this is why he doesn’t have a deal. Conspiracy theories, love it.

I have to think he's a 1st-2nd guy
or two 2’s or something like that. If a player is involved, it depends on the player, but to dump him for less than a top pick is ridiculous. This guy was being touted as a Pro-Bowler last year, and while his production is down, I don’t believe its player driven.
If we offered Ruud for a 2nd or 3rd, I think other GM’s jump at it.

Ruud is not a high 1 pick (meaning going to a desperate linebacking team). If he does go for high 1’s 5-10, that team is just needy.

I don't think he's worth a top 5 pick either
but if it’s offered, you have to SERIOUSLY consider it. Two second rounders would be interesting, but you have to decide if you want to roll the dice on another MLB.

I'm on board with trading Bryant to be honest.
He walks at the end of the year. If you can get something for him, you do it. I don’t know what FMV is for a WR of his caliber, but I’d rather them take the picks than get nada.
Of course, if we trade anyone not named Clayton, this city will be in an uproar, which will be stupid. If we get back FMV, then trading a Bryant is the right thing, but everyone will say (mark my words). “The Bucs are giving up, they’re cheap, they’re trying to save money” etc etc etc

I can see other players being brought in. AB would help Freeman’s development, but maybe he would develop as a field scanner with less attractive options instead of locking on AB and K2 every play

Here's the take on the trade from RotoWorld (not glowing for the Bucs)
While Bucs GM Mark Dominik mails in the season by dealing off his most gifted pass rusher and nearing insertion of an underclassman rookie QB, Bears GM Jerry Angelo is in the talent acquisition business. Trading first-day picks isn’t advised, except when the return is a 26-year-old with dominating ability and a contract through 2012. Jim Bates, who’s clearly lost his touch, couldn’t get enough out of Adams in his first season as Bucs defensive coordinator. It’s a good bet that Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will.

Thank God
He wasn’t doing ANYTHING. i understand that he was a first rounder and that he was given 29 games, but the fact of the matter is that he wasn’t doing anything pass rushing or run stopping. i think alot of you are looking at it from the wrong perspective, when i see the bucs, i see a team that has no choice but to play what they have because 1) its rebuilding, you think were young now, omg just wait till next yr, and 2) its just a new era and its hard to accept this right now because were losing, most of these players are gone next season and were gonna totally retool the defense with players that fit the system.
im even gonna say this and im gonna be the first and maybe even the only buc fan to say. i like whats happening. there getting rid of the old and filling the new and Gaines Adams to me was not worth waiting around for. they got value for him when they did and im actually astounded we got a second rounder for him because he wasn’t even playing like a second round pick. no, i feel we got rid of him while we could sell his “potential tag” and got away with a pick that will help us rebuild this defense. were gonna be aggressive in the draft and who knows, maybe we will end up with 2 first round picks. its all about waiting and seeing but i was soo tired of waiting on Macdonald’s lovin Adams to live up to his potential, he was tagged as being lazy coming out of college and thats the only part of him that has lived up to its hype.

I dont think anyone here was saying we shouldve passed on the trade.
Hindsight is 20/20 on what happens, but getting a second rounder for Adams at this point seems like an obvious deal. The Bears have faith they can turn him around, we couldnt. Had you asked me yesterday what we couldve gotten for Gaines, I might have stretched and said a 3rd. Now, I’m not an NFL trade guru, but a 2nd seemed ludicrous.

there is just an abundance amount of defensive talent in the 2010 draft, this is gonna be sooo sweet to watch and just see us get the guys i know raheem is looking for. if there is any yr i want a head coach learning on the job, its definately this yr cuz when you rebuild, you are actually almost saying lets take a yr or 2 to rebuild and get our team where it needs to be.
and for the note, im new, and im soo happy to see more buc fans that actually understand the situation and that it is a rebuilding yr.

So uh...
who is our #1 draft pick gonna get wasted on this year since the Bucs have had the habit as of late NOT PICKING the best available at any position (perfect example: Talib over Michael Jenkins)?
He bleeds Garnet and Gold, She bleeds Crimson and White. AND THEY BOTH HATE ORANGE! GO NOLES!! ROLL TIDE!!

Why bring up the mistakes of a draft board that is no longer here?
I mean I could say " OMG were gonna screw up this draft because we took Booker Reece and messed that up".
Who cares. We only have ONE draft to look at, last years..and so far we are getting production from a good number of players. We’ll see in a few years, but Talib over Jenkins anyways is a bad example. Talib is considered to be a rising star in the NFL.
If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

Chiefs fan over at Arrowhead Pride here...
I wana run something past you guys. Wait 10 seconds…think about it…before you start throwing stones at me…
What would you guys think about trading your 1st rounder for Glenn Dorsey?
by MasterBlaster7 on Oct 17, 2009 12:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This was my argument over at Arrowhead Pride...
Why dont the buck’s take him?
See…what I dont see…
It is entirely possible we will pick about 2nd this year in the draft where the bucks will pick maybe 3rd.
It is likely that the Buck’s will be targeting Ndamukong Suh as they are in desperate need a Good DT for their 4-3.
Now…
It is widely believed that Suh isn’t even in the same ball park of talent as Dorsey when it comes to 4-3 DT.
The Bucks might even save money if they traded with us for Dorsey for their 1st round pick…straight up.
It has been shown that DTs usually start to shine till their 3rd or 4th year with their team ala Warren Sapp. Dorsey will be in his 3rd year next year and Suh wont be ready till the 2112 season by this reasoning.
Also, Dorsey has shown that the worries about his knees when he was originally drafted were false. He is mostly a regular starter without recurrent problems.
Dorsey was not allowed to do what he does best under Herm which is that quick step rush of the QB.
Now in his second year, he is showing signs of life in a position he was never built to play, he is geting his instincts down in a faster environment than DT as a 3-4 DE.
If….
this trade were to go through. We could get Russell Okung with our first 1st pick. Slide Albert over to RT (where he started out).
Then draft Carlos Dunlap with our 2nd pick. We would have a true freak of a right side rushing defensive end with this guy.
Ok…so what do you guys think

Before I respond, I'd like to point out we are the Bucs, not the Bucks
One is NFL, the other is NBA.
I would rather take our shots with our draft picks than trade them away. Dorsey hasn’t shown anything at the NFL level yet, so I’ll go with someone who may excel from the start.

I'd trade
Our 2ed and a 3rd for Dorsey not a first, i think my real question is that if Dorsey is ready now….why would you trade him away?
by shadowchicken on Oct 17, 2009 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lets see...
Buc Wild
We got Dorsey with the 5th pick in the draft and its 2 years later. If you guys pick 1-4 you would be saving yourselves money taking Dorsey.
Shadowchicken
Well…we switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Dorsey isnt a natural DE in the 3-4…but he is a natural DT in the 4-3…what you guys run.
Do you guys really think Suh is better for you than Dorsey? I guess if you think so than nevermind.

Dorsey hasn't shown anything yet.
Id rather spend 3-4 MM extra a year to have a guy perform. And no guarantee we go DT with our first pick either.

i didn't realise
Ya’ll went from a 4-3 to a 3-4, But why not put him at the nose tackle? He’s huge right? like 6-7….

Suh has more upside, yes.
If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

Nah...
Glenn Dorsey is more like 6 1 290…he is better at DE than NG in a 3-4. We have tank tyler at nose guard. He isnt doing too bad. Built like a NG. Played NG. And he did like 42 reps at his combine…he is unreal strong.
Well anyways. Just thought I’d run that past you guys. Interesting feedback. Thanx for not stoning me. Haha.

I’d like to know where people are hearing that Suh isn’t the same caliber as Dorsey. Bo Pelini coached both, and has stated several times that Suh has the tools to be a better player.
"They’re very similar," Pelini said of Suh and Dorsey. "And in some ways, big Suh has got some edges in some areas. So it just shows you how good he can be."
That was before the season began. A more recent quote from a column. “Bo Pelini calls Suh the best player he’s ever coached and I believe it, the dude is serious.”
He’s now been projected as high as second in the draft (McShay) behind any of the top three or four top qbs.
Kiper put Suh third behind Bradford and Berry in his latest top five, with a caveat.
“Ndamukong Suh rightfully moves up after a dominating performance against Virginia Tech — yes, in a loss — in which he not only was disruptive in the manner great defensive tackles often are, but also batted down four passes, a fantastic stat. It’s a case where a guy is just relentlessly active, regardless of whether he’s double-teamed or chasing down a quarterback. He affects the play. I’ve said it before: Suh could be at the top of this when all is said and done. "
That was prior to his performance against Mizzou, mind you.
