Going in the wrong direction that leads us to NOW!
There are alot of "would haves" ,"should haves", and "could haves" but if you look at the draft breakdown during the Gruden area, it really explains why we are in the shape we are in.
BAD DRAFT #1
2002 draft without a first and second round pick produced one player really, Jermaine Phillips. The entire draft that year other than the first round was subpar. We had picks like Marquis Walker, Travis Stephens, John Stamper, Tim Wansley, Tracy Winstrom, Aaron Lockett, and Zack Quaccia.
BAD DRAFT #2
2003 draft without a first round pick produced picks like Chris Simms, Sean Mahan, and Tori Cox. Dewayne White was the best pick of the draft but left after becoming a free agent joining the Detroit Lions. The player I was high on that year was Drew Henson QB, who was selected in the 6th round. Mr. Yankee never panned out with the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, or the Detroit Lions even though Jerry Jones pushed the issue during his time at Dallas.
BAD DRAFT #3
2004 draft gave us first round pick Micheal "Hands of Stone but I can Block" Clayton. We know how that story is developing. The best pick out of the draft was Will Allen, our rotation safety that gets toasted nearly every week. We had Marquis Cooper, Jeb Terry, Nate Lawrie, Mark Jones, Casey Cramer, and Lenny Williams, whom all are no longer on our team and might not even be in the league. I was high on Matt Schaub who went to the Atlanta Falcons in the 3rd round. He could have been our franchise quarterback but played behind Micheal Vick until he got his opprotunity with the Houston Texans.
GOOD DRAFT #1
2005 draft gave us Cadillac Williams, our 1st round pick, which without injury would have been one of the best running backs of the decade. He is back from two- season ending knee injuries and we are glad he's back. Barrett Ruud, Alex Smith, and Dan Buenning all came from this draft and have proven to be solid assets. We still drafted Casey Comer, Donte Nicholson, Larry Brackins, Anthony Bryant, Rick Razzano, Parris Warren, and J.R. Russell, but I said it was a good draft because it's the best out of all of them.
BAD DRAFT #4
2006 draft gave us the right side of our Offensive Line with Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood in the 1st and 2nd Rounds. After that Maurice Stovall and Bruce Gradkowski. The rest with the likes of Allen Zematis, Julian Jenkins, T.J. Williams, Justin Phinisee, Charles Bennett, and Tim Massaquoi. This draft filled some needs but not enough.
BAD DRAFT #5
2007 draft could have been the best draft in Buccaneer history but they passed up on the BEST PLAYER in the NFL. I don't care how many runningbacks you have or don't have, you pick Adrian Peterson. Don't give me that "we didn't know" excuse because we did know and Jon Gruden has been creaming on himself everytime his name is mentioned. Instead we pick Gaines Adams with our 1st round pick. You know what I'm thinking, so I'm not going to comment. Aaron Sears had a huge upside and would have been the best pick of the draft but fell due to mental issues. I hope he can pull through. Sabby Piscitelli, Quincy Black, and the best of the bunch Tanard Jackson have proven they are future commidities. Greg Peterson, Adam Hayward, Chris Denman, Marcus Hamilton, Kenneth Darby didn't pan out like expected. I gave this a bad draft rating because of plain stupidity.
BAD DRAFT #6
2008 draft gave us a solid player in the first round with Anquib Talib. I had no problems with that even though we were in desperate need of a wide receiver. I was hoping on moving up in the draft to get Deshawn Jackson but instead we pick Dexter Jackson because Applician St. beat Michigan. I guess. We did however pick Jeremy Zuttah and Geno Hayes, solid picks. Josh Johnson and Dre Moore we have to wait and see. It was our second best draft in the Gruden era, but the bonehead move with Dexter is unforgivable.
This brings us to NOW. Six bad drafts with one in the past seven years doesn't cut it. Instead of retooling, we rolled the dice based on poor scouting. I look back and see players like Matt Schaub and Adrian Peterson, who would have been franchise players for us, and it just makes me shake my head. We wouldn't be rebuilding now, we would still be retooling and competitve.

Solution to theses problems
Free Agents:
Richard Seymour DE OAK, Clint Ingram OLB JAX, Darren Sharper FS NO
Trade:
Anquan Boldin WR ARZ (2nd and 4th)
Draft 2010:
Russell Okung OT Oklahoma St. (1st pick)
Resign:
Cadillac Williams RB, Antonio Bryant WR (#2 WR), Jimmy Wilkerson DE, Barrett Ruud MLB
This would add talent and fill some holes. Josh Freeman starting QB, Donald Penn move to RT, Tanard Jackson move to RCB, Ronde Barber move to NB. Atleast 10 wins and playoffs for 2010.

A correction and a comment
You talk of the “Gruden area” in the first paragraph. Should that not read Gruden era?
Secondly — I think you nailed home a point about the Bucs the last seven drafts that would have hurt any draft selection that the Bucs brought in (and honestly it has): the team repeatedly went for the a roll of the dice. Most of the time, the players brought in were middling to join the staff that was already part fo the team. Gruden and Allen (the past era) were more about keepign around a veteran nucleus that got smaller and smaller each year. Home grown talent or older veterans that had been around a while were let go in favor of other FA’s and the middling draftees.
“Oh, but don’t worry! The big names are still here!”
See, this was part of the reason why I could understand the Bucs clearing out all veterans (or so it seemed) during the off-season… I don’t agree with their choices now, but I understood it at the time — the Buccaneers were leaning on Brooks and any other older players to be THE guys. The team needs to find a new direction and that’s what I thought would be achieved in the rest of the off season after those cuts.
It wasn’t. And so we’re left with the mess that’s been this season so far.
I never trusted Gruden with the #1 pick because where the Bucs had needs, I felt like the team would go with a want instead.

I agree..
With this article, except for the Schaub part. Just because I’m still alittle unsure about him. He seems on and off. [If I didn’t believe in JJ i’d actually change my mind considering hes better than Freeman or Sluggo] Caddy was a great draft besides the fluke injuries of course. And I remember watching TB pass on AP…..I thought to myself that we DID need other areas taken care of but theres just no way you pass on the chance of having Caddy AND AP in the same backfield…..my mouth wouldve been foaming if i was Gruden in that position. Hate to say it, but those injuries prolly wouldnt have happend to Caddy and even if they did AP wouldve stepped up anyhow. Im not sayin Gaines was a bad pick because I still think its too early to give up on him….but really, Gaines or AP??? HA, that questioned shouldnt even be asked.

I think Schaub
is a stud, but I’m biased because he is my fantasy QB and he lights it up for me every week. He does seem to lack something though, the “leadership” aura or something. I can’t quite put my finger on it. He has certainly more than lived up to his draft status though.
I wouldn’t call Caddy’s injuries flukes. He was injury prone in college and we knew that when we drafted him. I would say that they rolled the dice on that one too, and it has pretty much failed to pay dividends thus far. He has looked good this year, but he isn’t singlehandedly winning games for us the way a guy like Adrian Peterson can do for you. The other team doesn’t go out and game plan for Cadillac. I think a top five running back should demand respect like that.
I’m glad Gaines is out of here. Thrilled we managed to finagle (spelling?) a 2nd round pick for him. Hopefully the coaches in Chicago can coach him up to his potential. I wish him luck.

He (Caddy) may be injury prone
but his injuries were freak accidents. And those are behind him now.
Schaub is missing the stay healthy factor. You can’t be a consistent quarterback when you miss 4-5 games a year.

yeah, but would you agree that drafting Caddy was a gamble?
Any time you take an injury prone player, you gamble IMO. He certainly hasn’t lived up to top five status by any means. He is good, but not great.

What about Peterson? He was injury prone
I don’t think it was a huge gamble. He had two freak injuries. It’s revisionist, but if he doesnt have those issues, he’s a solid 1200 yard guy. His pass catching skills were iffy, but he’s improved there and against the blitz and he has the power to move a pile and the speed and vision to make plays.
That cut on his TD run was an example of why he went top 5. Not every back makes that cut and then hits the corner to the endzone.

All I'm saying
we definitely have not got our moneys worth from Cadillac. Is it his fault? Not really, but it sucks that now that his contract is almost up he is finally producing. Funny how that works in the NFL huh?

Just because
you get injured doesnt make you injury prone. I know Caddy got hurt in college, so did AP. But AP was not injury prone, I dont know how many times Caddy was hurt, but I dont remember anyone saying he was injury prone. Since he has been in the NFL he has been Injury prone though.

Caddy did get hurt a lot in college
and AP got banged up but that was due to his running style. If getting injured frequently doesnt make you injury prone, I dont know what does.

Oh I thought he was an injury Pro.
Kidding of course. Im a caddy homer too, I just kneel to your greater homerness to him.
If anyone can get production out of Gaines Adams, it will be Rod Marinelli. Good Luck Gaines and thank you Bucs for restoring my confidence that there is accountability.

I only recall AP
getting hurt once and missing almost the entire season in college. I enjoyed watching him play but I am def not a Sooner fan so I guess I could be wrong. But I was implying getting hurt once or twice doesnt make you injury prone. But if AP was hurt more then I remember…then nvm.
Fred Taylor= injury prone
Tom Brady= not Injury prone

AP had high ankle sprains
He played his whole freshman year
high ankle sprain soph year
broken collarbone in junior year
but still goes down in the record books as one of the best OU running backs ever…..next to Billy Sims ofcourse
