2009 NFL Draft Board powered by New Era Scouting
As of today the NFL Draft is exactly three months away (April 25-26). As a Bucs fan the arrival of the Draft has always been bittersweet. The typical outcome would leave me scratching my head regarding who the Bucs drafted from Rounds three through seven. Last season I put an end to that by educating the community here on who the Bucs could look to draft and there wasn’t a pick I wasn’t familiar with, sure I disagreed with some, but at least I wasn’t in the dark as to who was taken. I vowed that 2007 would be the last Buccaneers draft in which I was miffed on who the Bucs selected.
Below you‘ll notice a Draft Chart powered by New Era Scouting, the rankings aren’t entirely correct and I plan to update them as soon as New Era Scouting updates their overall rankings with the underclassmen. Here’s the thing, we’re all Bucs Fans but a lot of us follow different College Teams, so if you feel a player is overrated/underrated or just flat out missing say so in the comments section. The goal is to educate ourselves on who the Bucs may or may not select in April’s NFL Draft.
Another goal of this post is to generate a select group of players we would like and approve of the Bucs drafting. To come up with a projected pick for each round of the Draft that we collectively feel the Bucs will select come Draft day. SBNation also does a Mock Draft amongst the NFL blogs through rounds 1 and 2 of the Draft and so we need a collective response to that request as well. In order to do that we have to agree on the Bucs Draft needs. Here‘s where I think they need immediate help:
DT, DE, WR, RB, QB, LB, CB
We had absolutely no answer for the run game those final four games of the season. Jovan Haye had six sacks last season and none this year. Chris Hovan has never been a sack man, but he was getting pushed off the ball with ease in the second half of last season. If we can‘t get an Albert Haynesworth, Julius Peppers, or a Tank Johnson in Free Agency then the d-line will certainly need help via the Draft. If we lose out on Antonio Bryant in free agency, then the Receiver position might become our biggest need to date. We still have Joey Galloway on the roster and Maurice Stovall will be back from injury. There‘s also that guy named Dexter Jackson, but that‘s all I‘ll say about that.
The Quarterback position is also unsettled with Garcia and McCown becoming free agents. Hopefully the Bucs elect to play Josh Johnson and forego drafting a QB in April. Derrick Brooks is still highly capable, but if a guy as talented as Brian Cushing is around the Bucs would have to at least contemplate looking at him. Cornerback and Runningback are positions we have filled, but may or may not need to be addressed via the draft if the right player falls to us. Alright, what do you think?

I don't see us taking a RB.
Invested in Graham and have Dunn and Williams coming back (100% or not). I think they get another year to see what they can do and if results aren’t great, 2010 could be the year we go after one higher in the draft.

Harvin will be a reciever
in the pros.

Yes but...
…Wells will be a RB. Just my two cents, but I don’t think we’re going RB in the first round.

I agree....
but……………..Carnell is injury prone, Dunn is old and we aren’t really sure if Graham is the ‘real deal’

Completely agree...
…but also why I think they go another year. I’d say this year investing a first in it when we have other needs is too much. Next year, I’d be all for it.

I agree.
If one goes down, we can always make a mid-season acquisition of Travis Henry….. (just kidding).

Do we have enough cap space to cover his child support payments?

The lack of a state income tax should help. Also, make sure the players lock their things up.

Pat White?
They really think he’s 2nd round material? Don’t get me wrong, he had a great college career, but 2nd round? Maybe I just don’t see his game translating to the NFL. Prove me wrong Pat.

I can't believe
that teams are still looking for a Kordell Stewart….but they are. I would agree that is potential is very very limited.

Maybe White can be a decent pro...
…I just think 2nd round is way too high. I’m with you on that one.

to be fair they project him
as a WR, i just lumped him in with the QB’s…. These rankings will certainly change over the next few months, which i dread as this post was ridiculous to put together

I will have to ask a buddy of mine who is a UCA grad
but what kind of offense does Central Ark. run that they have two pro prospects at fullback?

I almost
discredited this thing completely when I saw Maybin from PSU wasn’t on there. Then i read it isn’t updated. He will be the top End taken.

Line
There are a lot of good offensive and defensive linemen available. I would like to see the Bucs first 3 or 4 picks be linemen on either side of the ball. If a cornerback snuck in there that would be ok. Of course, if someone fell unexpectedly (like Sanchez, etc.) the Bucs should grab them. Some non-1st round picks I like are: DTs Moala, Marks and Scott; DE Shaugnessy, OT Boone, Cs Mack and Cooper.
They have to draft a DT somewhere, even if they sign Haynesworth.

12 of the top 15
teams to invest in lineman in draft if the past 5 years made the playoffs. There are alot of factors that play into this, however you can’t ignore that investing in lineman pays off.

Quarterback situation
Oh, what about Tampa taking Chase Daniel or Graham Harrell in the 4th thru 7th round? They wouldn’t even have to worry about bringing back Garcia or McCown, they could just go with Griese, Johnson and Daniel/Harrell and let them battle it out. If neither of the young guys emerged, Griese is not a bad short term option (I believe he is 8-2 as a Tampa starter).

Harrell then I would be Daniel….

I missed it
because Comcast likes to TORTURE their customers and not carry the NFL network on standard cable.

I am absolutely stoked about the upcoming draft. I feel like I did when I was a kid and watched the ENTIRE draft start to finish.
Personally, I feel like this is a deep draft and obviously in some areas moreso than others. I am very curious to see how the new staff drafts and how these players measure up against drafts of the Gruden/Allen regime. Granted, we draft 20th overall and not 5th, but surely we can get some talent. DL is my immediate concern, then WR and RB. I would like to see some depth on the O-line but am definitely happy with the crew that they have in there.

I posted in another thread that I wan't so sure about drafting Percy Harvin in the first round...
I would prefer DT with the 1st round pick. I did read an interesting mock draft on walterfootball.com that says we draft Harvin’s teammate WR Louis Murphy out of Florida in the 3rd round. Now I like that pick. Actually, if we didn’t pick a DT in the first, there are some quality DL in later rounds. I also like the same mock draft saying we draft RB Moreno of Georgia in the 1st and taking DT Marks out of Auburn in the 2nd round.

What do you guys think of DT Peria Jerry out of Ole Miss?
by TheUltimateBucFan on Jan 26, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
From everything I have read and seen
he is a pass-rushing DT with dependability questions. I think run-stopping is a much higher need.

RB from colorado state
He played at the east west shrine game , and looked amazing ! he lowered and straitened his shoulders to the defender before getting hit ! he was elusive and fast enough to be an adequate back in the NFL but he’s not the list whats up ? anyone else know who im talking about ?

Gartrell Johnson
Looked around on the internet to find out anything about him. Had a great 2008 at CSU with over 1700 all purpose yards. Nothing on his draft projections though.
