Draft Spotlight #3: Alphonso Smith

Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

5'9, 190, 4.45 (.40)

I watched him play quite a bit as a big FSU fan. This is not the most immediate need with Barber and Talib, however Barber isn't producing at a high-level anymore and his days are numbered. I will give you more thoughts in a bit....

Upside: PLAYMAKER. The guy is a ball-hawk. 21 Career Interceptions...Numbers will be below. The guy is incredible on run-support and has the coverage skills to run with the best of recievers.

Downside: He is 5'9 190. However, in Tampa....this may not be such a downside. He is physical, but would lack the strength and size to play with players like T.O, or Mushin Muhammed, etc. But remember, there is Talib.

I think this is a very intriguing pick. It may not be sexy....but I think out of the 3 I have featured so far, it would prove to be the best investment in the long run. He would also fit the 'bump and run' that Bates is said to run.

Here are his numbers, then I want to hear your thoughts.....

Personally I think this is a stretch

for our first pick as Malcolm Jenkins and Vontae Davis could fall to us. Despite him being a ballhawk and being able to blitz the QB, which Bates would appreciate, i think there are better guys out there. DJ Moore is also a possibility.

No way does Jenkins fall.

Davis is a possibility, but Jenkins goes Top 10.

like you said its not sexy

and i think the fan base would grumble about this pick (two CB’s in two years), BUT Ronde is on the downside and Phillip Buchanon is a free agent. It truly is a need for the Bucs who essentially use three full time cornerbacks in their system.

In my view there isnt a single player in this draft (including top 10 picks) that would put this team over the hump and so what do you do about that? You draft quality guys at pressing positions you can’t fulfill in free agency…. I wouldnt argue with Raheem if he decided to go in this direction at all…

Smith looks like he will be successful at the next level

however, I only see the Bucs taking him if they have filled more pressing needs during free agency. I think we’d even take another DE before we take a CB.

Well....

I think at this point in the draft we may have to be taking BPA. Unless EB drops (God, lets hope he does) we would grab him, but at 18 the top teir DE’s have gone. I would put Smith in the top Teir of CB’s.

Who do you think that may be?

Its too hard to pick considering that going with that plan is completely circumstantial. It could be any number of people that fall, but im praying that somehow, Knowshon Moreno falls to us.

Well sure....

I was hypothetically saying. You can get a pretty good feel of who won’t be there. Unless your name is Aaron Rodgers.
