Draft Spotlight #2: Peria Jerry

It is no secret that I want BJ Raji. There is no player that fills a need with excellence like Raji would. He is a run-stopping defensive tackle, who has a mean streak and has very quick feet for a big guy.

With that being said, that is NOT who this spotlight is on. His stock continues to rise and it look like he will be in the Top 12 if not the Top 10. The DT that is most likely to be there is Peria Jerry from Ole Miss (#2 rate DT).

Peria Jerry, Sr, Ole Miss, 6-1, 290 (about the same size and strength of Hovan and Haye)

He runs a 4.9 and is pretty athletic for a big guy. He is considered more of a Pass Rushing Defensive Tackle. DT is a giant need for us we got exposed late in the season to the run. He is a little soft, and is easily pushed around. He has a lot of penetration abilities, but not much run stopping ones.

Peria also has some injury issues. He missed quite a few games his first couple of years and had knee surgery before this past season (though he did play in all of their games, so it doesn't seem to be a persistent injury).

First team AP All-American. Having great Senior Bowl Practices as he is in the backfield quite a bit. Really helping out his stock!

I still say NO. Though he would help our pass rush, I would be looking more for a big run stopper like Raji. I think there are better options out there at this position.

Here are his stats.....(courtesy of OleMissSports.Com)

Definitely..

should not go with a DT who specializes in pass rush. Another thing we need is a guy with a nasty mean streak to spark that line up a bit. Raji’s counterpart Brace and USC’s Fili Moala would be better picks in the 2nd round even if they dont fit our scheme.

I like Brace alot

But I agree….He’s more of a 2nd rounder.

Brace is a one-trick pony

He only has one move, and that is to bull-rush. While I would absolutely prefer Raji over Jerry, I think Jerry would be great value at the 19th pick if he is there.

i like the thought of him getting after the QB, ala Warren Sapp, but i dont like the thought of him being soft and getting pushed around. Stopping the run was a MAJOR reason we failed epically down the stretch…

We should also keep in mind that Bates prefers big DTs

so if they do pick Jerry, it will be because they think he can still be successful after gaining some more bulk.

True.

Check out that link I posted in the FanShot section. He likes run-stopping DT’s. His whole defense is predicated on it. I think if we get that, we have a lot of the personell in place that he likes.

.

It all depends on Haynesworth. If they dont get him, they will most likely draft Jerry because of his pass rush abilities alongside Hovan or Haye. If they get Haynesworth they may pass and taking a run-stopper to play alongside of him.

Do you think a pass rushing DT

is a need?

Well..

even though its not a desperate need with Jovan Haye, adding Haynesworth at the under tackle would require us to take a nose tackle to replace Hovan down the line.

AH

do u think we will actually have a chance 2 get haynesworth?

No.

I think he stays in TN.

i think we have a shot

there’s a reason the franchise tag stipulation was put into his contract. In this day and age (aka Free Agency) the all mighty dollar wins out. We have a cool 46 million in the vault and a potential uncapped year for ’10, Haynesworth would be a fool not to see what he could net in the open market, hence we have a shot

I also

dont believe that Tennessee repeats their success from last year. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets to the open door that he becomes a buc. I haven’t checked it out, but how many defensive powerhouses have the cap room and need like the bucs?

I also think that the Raheem Morris will viewed be with similar lenses to Mike Tomlin which might make individuals more likely to play here.. a truly unfounded belief.
