Draft Spotlight #1: Josh Freeman
I am going to try and do some FanPosts highlihgting some of the potential First Round Draft Picks.
Because Mel Kiper is the Godfather of the draft (not that he's always right ,or I always agree with him) I will consider his pick for us initially.
Josh Freeman, Kansas St. University
6-6, 250, (Junior Entering Draft)
The guy obviously has great size for an NFL quarterback. He runs about a 4.8 (not fast, but not slow) but still has great athleticism. FootballFutures.Com says he is a 'raw' talent. He makes the throws, has the arm and a great amount of talent, but he is 'young. He was a three year starter at KSU. He improved tremendously each year, but lacks the proper mechanices. FootballFutures.Com says that he is "erratic" with his mechanics at times.
To me this is a BAD pick. I do think he has potential in the NFL, but it sounds an awful lot alike Johnson. Do we want two projects on the team? Is it WORTH a first round draft pick? Quarterback is a definite need, yet this pick just seems out there to me! I decided to go over the "BringontheCats.com" The SBNation site for the Kansas St. Wildcats to get folks opinion who are entrenched in KSU football.
"Upside: Cannon of an arm, moderately mobile, bigger than most linebackers, can make any throw in the book
Downside: Mental approach, leadership, decision making, fundamentals break down under pressure
I find it pretty surprising that Freeman is projected to go in the first round. When he first declared, he was projected as a second or third rounder at best. He is a pretty smart, likeable young man, though, so he’ll come across well in personal interviews, and I’m sure his measureables will be impressive. It remains to be seen whether better coaching than what he got here at K-State can turn him into a really good quarterback." ~"TB" was kind enough to give me his thoughts, and I greatly appreciate it.
Freeman's College Stats are listed below. As ESPN has pointed out, Tampa hasn't had a first round draft pick make the Pro Bowl (for what it's worth) since Warrick Dunn, our pick in 1997. Ouch.
Let's hear your thoughts!

wow
I will be very disappointed if they use their first pick on a project QB. Personally I think we should go OT, RB if Moreno or Wells is on the board, D-Line, or a corner who can man up.

There is some possibilities still at the pint in the draft
for a good defensive lineman, corner, and rb. I will examine those later.
I think offensive Tackles are starting to get thin and there isn’t a whole lot at this point that your can’t get in the 2nd round.

Freeman will fail at the next level, I certainly hope we don't draft him in any round
The man will be an INT machine at the next level. I think we should be looking at QB’s like Nate Davis and Graham Harrell. IF Harrell shows he has decent arm strength, I think he could be a great QB.

True....
But he did curb his interception ratio every year in college. You’d wonder if he had good coaching, if this trend would continue.

That is a very good point. He did have little to no talent around him
maybe with good coaching he could develop into something special. However, his INTs still bother me. I would like to see a comparison of his and Nate Davis’ combine workouts. Right now I like Davis more because he was a winner in college and he didn’t exactly have a whole lot of talent around him. I know he was in a lower division, but he just seems to have the presence and leadership that I’m not sure we will see in Freeman

Sounds like
an accurate comparison. Though, I don’t recollect ever watching Freeman play other than highlights I looked up this morning.

yea, he really flew under the radar at K-State, since the Wildcats became irrelevant recently
It’s kind of funny how Kiper discounts decisionmaking and folding under pressure… last time I checked, those things were what separated college and pro QBs.

i'm looking forward to the
future Draft Reports…
i would die if the Bucs drafted a QB period in this draft. I understand the current staff isnt tied to Josh, but come on, let’s see what we have. It’s like converting Tim Tebow and Pat White to anything other than QB’s… There’s Doug Fluties/Jeff Garcia’s in this world that actually beat the stigma… See what the guy has and then cut bait…
And please play Dexter Jackson at wideout so we dont wonder whether he could have been serviceable
sorry for the rant, been painting and the fumes have obviously gone to my head

What I would do with guys like Tebow and White
I think they are too athletic to not put out on the field, but I also think it would be counter-productive to simply throw them in as rookie QB’s. I would tell both guys to learn the playbooks, and while they are, we will put them in at other positions like RB, WR, TE, etc. You can train the guys to become successful at other skill positions, and then try them out at QB. If they flop as QBs, then you will always have another spot they are ready to play at. It also opens the door for a plethora of trick plays.

no doubt
get something out of them while they are learning their preferred positions on their down time. i guess we have a year to figure it out with Tebow, as i’m pretty confident the Bucs have zero interest in Pat White

agreed
but I dont really see the Bucs taking a flyer on Tebow unless they completely bypass the qb position this year.

I would go for it.....
but it would also depend on which round.

K-State Connection
I would love to see Tampa grab a DT in the first round, someone like BJ Raji. However, Raheem Morris was at Kansas State when Freemen was there. Maybe he knows something we don’t about the kid.
I’d rather see Garcia come back for 1 or 2 years and find out what we have with Josh.

Great point about the KSU
connection. Many times coaches draft players they have good relationships with. I think it’s a mistake to go after Freeman, but you make a solid observation.

i mean if its the route they
go, its the route they go… i’m accustomed to having this coaching staff make decisions and then immediately second guess them, that i forgot what its like to trust a coaching staff and trust their personnel decisions… i at least owe that to Morris/Dominik

Garcia would be the wrong QB to bring back.
McCown is the only QB worth bringing back with Johnson. I’d prefer us taking a DT in the first round as well though. I think having Bates here increases the likelihood of that as well. All of his defenses had big DTs and speedy DEs. I’d expect either Albert Haynesworth or a first round DT (or possibly both) on this team next year. You also can’t rule out us taking a DE, like Johnson from GT, in the first round.

I'm going with no.
Get us younger and faster on Defense. DT, LB, CB, I don’t care. It was our D that fell apart in the fourth quarter of the last 4 games.
We can draft good qb’s in the 4th and 5th rounds. QB’s don’t have to have the same athletic build as the freaks that defensive players do. Quarterbacks need to be smart, good decision makers. Look at what the Patriots do. If you take a qb in the first round, he should be a “sure thing” – Definitely not a project.
by CelticPride on Jan 24, 2009 1:03 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
and there isnt a single 'sure thing'
in this years draft in terms of the QB talent… nothing the Bucs would trade up for… next season is a different story, but not this season

No way
If I was going to grab a QB in the first round (which i wouldn’t), it would be USC’s Mark Sanchez if he fell that far, which seems unlikely… but we don’t need to take another QB. I really want to see what we are going to do in FA, but as we sit, I’d go with DT BJ Raji (as has been said before) or perhaps CB Malcolm Jenkins if he takes an unexpected plunge (not likely)

DT
I dont wanna see the bucs draft a QB at all. We need DT like B.J. Raji.. or LB like Brian Cushing… If pats trade cassell i say we make a move toward him..

We would have to give up ALOT!
You think it’s worth it?

I agree....
Also I still question Matt Cassell quite a bit, though I think he is a good quarterback and anything we have or could get.
