Gauging Interest in Julius Peppers
Hello Buc fans,
By now everyone knows that Julius Peppers clearly wants to find another team for next season and of course we all know JScott's feelings towards him. Us fans over at Cat Scratch Reader would like to get a feel for what other teams fans would trade for Peppers, if at all. He says he is interested in a 3-4 defense but many of us believe that is mostly a smoke screen and he just wants to find another place to play. But I don't really want to get into why he wants to leave. So, answer me this question, provided we franchise him, what would the Bucs be willing to trade for Peppers?
(I'd prefer you select something besides "other", but if you feel so inclined please leave a comment as to what you would give.)
Thanks.

it pained me to do it
but i went with nothing higher than a 2nd Round pick. We all know i love me some Julius Peppers, but (damn this hurts) one incredibly talented and tenacious defensive end will not fix what ails this team. We need more, more, and more help. The only way to fix our inconsistency is to build this team through the draft. We gave up 2 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick for Gruden and although it was worth it considering the Super Bowl Championship we received in return, it truly did set this franchise back….
“provided we franchise him”
Here’s hoping Carolina does NOT Franchise Peppers realizing they will get nothing in return from a disgruntled player should he remain in Carolina… And here’s to them not being able to work out a trade thus setting Julius free to sign with whomever he pleases… right
that hurt LittleKing…

the more I think about it the less I have a feeling on what they are going to do with him. It would hurts thinking about facing him twice a year.

Peppers is very talented...
…but if he’s not open for us to sign then I honestly don’t want to trade for him. Of course he would be a welcome addition to the team, but I think this team has a number of needs at the moment and needs to look at the bigger picture. I wouldn’t want to give up picks at this point. At least not high ones. Of course if we plan on using another 2nd rounder on a player just based on his 40-time, well you can have those picks any day of the week!

Peppers
I am a die hard Bucs fan, but live in Charlotte. I know about Julius and Carolina should franchise him or trade him (or both). They need to get something for him. With that school of thought, there’s no way they send him to Tampa! It does not matter the offer. *if they franchise him and keep him, he will play hard, you get hurt in the NFL if you don’t, plus other teams might be hesitant to give him BIG money.
Also, the Bucs don’t “need” him. They need to build thru the draft, so it’s not really worth giving up picks. We need DT help on the line more than anything. I wouldn’t mind seeing Kemoeatu in pewter!

like you said
the bucs definitely won’t acquire him via trade….
He’ll certainly play hard (it’s in his blood), but he’s not going to go all out for a franchise that is holding him down. He’s been a model citizen in Carolina, they shouldn’t tag him. Either trade him now for basically nothing or let him bounce. He doesnt deserve to be franchise tagged

No trades ......PLEASE
We need as many draft picks as possible…..the future the future the future…….He is a great talent but not worth it when you have the free agent DL talent that could be out there. Suggs BAL Canty DAL Haynesworth TENN Golston WASH Bernard SEA

Franchise tag makes him to expensive
“provided we franchise him” makes Peppers earning something like $9M for one year. Considering our needs we just can’t afford to give up draft picks plus $9M for him. It hurts me to say that since it would be a 2-for-1 we gain a great talent and our division rival losses him.

$17 Million
is what he would count against our (the panthers) cap if we franchise him. However, if we trade him would probably sign a new contract, so I couldn’t say what he would cost the bucs.

Wow
Yes, I later found the 16.7 million estimate for him….Wow that is a truck load of money. He is a great player with his resume only half complete, but he rightfully so will be looking for big $ that the Bucs just can’t afford to put into one player. A team that is one player away from making it to the show could find the pay off in Peppers. I hope he goes to the AFC so we don’t have to face him twice a year :-)

Agreed
We would prefer not to face him twice a year either. AFC is the top choice

Time Changes a lot
I found these three post from last March. Last year it sounds like you would have at least given the 1st rounder and possibly a bit more.

if this were my team solely
and i didnt have to hear fan backlash, sure, what the hell, I’d give two first round picks (I’m sure other bucs fans would too), but the truth is this team is trying to get stronger by adding depth and paying two potential first round picks on top of 12-15 million a year for one player doesnt appear to be the smartest move at this time..
