NFL Roster Cuts Deadline passes Bucs cut Simms, Spurlock, and more..
...UPDATE...
The Cuts begin (per the Pewter Report):
LB Patrick Chukwurah
CB Darrell Hunter
WR Chad Lucas
DE Charles Bennett
WR Brian Clark
QB Chris Simms (so long buddy)
DT Dre Moore
LB Ryan Nece
OG Brian Johnson
OT Chris Clark
OG Phil Bogle
RB Kenneth Darby
TE Daniel Fells
FB Carl Stewart
OT Dennis Roland
DT Chris Bradwell
OL Chris Denman
CB Marcus Hamilton
S Sergey Ivanov
WR/KR Michael Spurlock
RB Clifton Smith
WR Cortez Hankton (not cut, placed on Injured Reserve)
Tampa Tribune relays Simms impressions on finally being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
"It will always be a special place for me and who knows, it’s a crazy league,’’ he said. "Who’s to say I won’t be back here maybe in a few years. Warrick Dunn did it. You never know. "But I truly did enjoy it here in Tampa. It’s a great sports town, they love their sports, my family loved living here. The beach, the weather - it was a blast. I’m really grateful for the time I had living here.’
Something tells me Chris Simms will not be back in Tampa, despite Griese and Dunn’s returns. I can’t believe the Bucs mishandled this situation so badly. I guess they could say they were holding onto him in the event that Garcia, Griese, and McCown had season ending injuries during the Pre-Season, but it wasn’t right holding Simms as long as they did with no intention of keeping him. Also, if they wanted to drum up interest to spark a trade, they should have played him in the Pre-Season.. Ugly situation that is now behind us.. Good Luck Chris
The Bucs have to trim their rosters today from 75 players to 53 players. I believe there is a 6pm Est deadline for Roster Cuts so be sure to keep an eye out for them. A couple players on the bubble in my mind:
RB/KR Clifton Smith, DT Dre Moore, LB's Geno Hayes & Patrick Chukwurah, CB's Elbert Mack, Marcus Hamilton, and Eugene Wilson, QB's Luke McCown, Chris Simms, and Josh Johnson among others. Yes folks, the Chris Simms era could come to a screeching halt today, ahhhh. In case you missed the 5 previous roster cuts earlier this week, here they are:
The Bucs have finally made those Roster Cuts… The players being let go? WR Paris Warren, LB Antoine Cash, and S Donte Nicholson. If you’re scratching your head thinking, ‘Hey that’s only four players’; the Bucs also put RB Cadillac Williams on the Physically Unable to Perform List and optioned CB Sammy Davis to the ever popular Injured Reserve List.
If you hear of cuts, post 'em here or make a Fan Post and Post them there...

Chiefs cut
Kicker Connor Barth from the University of North Carolina, the Bucs could look to him for insurance on K Matt Bryant. Then again, the Chiefs did cut him

Texans cut
LB Ben Moffitt former University of South Florida football star… Bucs should definitely give him a look, unless the Texans intend to attach him to their Practice Squad

Bengals cut
RB Rudi Johnson or they’re expected to… My goodness, i know we have a sheesh load of Running backs, but it would be nice to have the former Auburn great… What are the Bengals thinking?

add
WR Mario Urrutia, CB Deltha O’Neal, and LB Ahmad Brooks to the list of Bangville Bengals having been released. The Bucs were interested in Urrutia leading up to the draft so maybe they will take a look at him now…

Cowboys cut
WR Todd Lowber, i’m not mentioning this for the Bucs to pick up Lowber as he’s rawer than the sushi i didnt have last night for dinner, but i wanted to bring up HBO’s Hard Knocks series which chronicled the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp and Pre-Season. If the NFL could figure out a way to show case each of its teams via the NFL Network, this fan would buy into it. Although i could careless about the Cowboys, that show is increasingly difficult not to watch… carry on

Possibly,
although he could still latch on as a 3rd QB somewhere. He was a 1st round projection in midseason last year, but a crappy finish to the season and meh offseason workout caused him to slide heavily. He must not have done much to change that impression.

49ers cut
WR Ashley Lelie… He’s tall and lanky and was good at one point, but um yeah…

i HATE that
Clifton Smith is expected to be cut, why would you get rid of speed and someone that has an elusive ability? He didnt excel as a Running back, but looked good as a Returner and outside of Spurlock and DJax we have no other returners (and Spurlock isnt great)… questionable decision if it in fact occurs

Rams cut
WR Reche Caldwell and QB Bruce Gradkowski. They’re actually trying to trade Bruce, but will likely find no takers… Caldwell played well for the Patriots, but like Michael Clayton, he suffers from dropping the pigskin

Falcons cut
QB Joey Harrington, TE Marcus Pollard, and DB Daren Stone. You gotta think this officially means the end for Harrington’s NFL Career… I’ve always liked Marcus Pollard but his abilities must have declined immensely for all of the teams that are letting him go..

Chris Simms
will be in a Texans uniform this season as their 3rd QB. Book it. Texans cut Shane Boyd and Alex Brink today and are only carrying Schaub and Rosenfels on their roster. Simms is tight with Texans assistant Kyle Shanahan, who was on the Bucs’ staff in ’04-05.

The Cowboys have reportedly been interested.
It might make sense for Simms to wind up there because QB Isiah Stanback will be called upon to fill the void at WR due to injuries.

i cant believe
thats the end of the road for Chris Simms… Now the question is, where will he end up? Atlanta? New Orleans? New York? Green Bay? Will he take the year off?

Jerry, what the hell?
Why keep Simms if all your gonna do is cut him? Dre Moore is a bit of suprise, maybe we can sign him practice squad if he doesn’t get picked up. The Nece era is over, a bit sad as he was a holdver from our SB team. He played well this preseason too….Clifton Smith will be resigned to practice squad. That’s all I got 4 now
by Rays Rule on Aug 30, 2008 7:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah i
absolutely hate what they did with Simms. It’s almost like Allen said, okay we paid you and you burned us and so now we’re going to burn you. I hope thats not how it went down, but there isnt a single thing pointing to otherwise. They didnt attempt to showcase Simms in the pre-season for a potential trade… i dont get it and will never get it. If Simms is smart he’ll sit out for a while and pin point the perfect situation..
I think Dre Moore and Clifton Smith will be on the Practice Squad and one can only hope

the oddest release to
me is the Chukwurah release, i mean to bring in the guy and start him and for what? Why not play somebody else who’s needs the minutes to market themselves?? Really odd

That hurricane (Gustav) is
looking to be pretty serious, Category 4 or 5 projections and headed right toward New Orleans… They should definitely go ahead and plan to play at Raymond James and then play in New Orleans in the second half of the season

Dynomite!! Way to go JJ!! I am happy we are keeping him but 4 QB's make 53 man for 2nd straight year
most teams only carry 3, some 2 QB’s

Spurlock got released
so who will join Dexter Jackson for Kick Returning duties

Desxter Jackson will be joing Dexter Jackson.... Since bothSpurlock and Smith are gone
via Buccaneers.com: Dexter Jackson is the return man. The rookie second-rounder led the NFL in punt return average during the preseason (30.0 yards), a number obviously spiked by Thursday’s 83-yard touchdown scamper in Houston. With the releases of Spurlock and Smith, the two other players who got looks at the return job during the preseason, the Bucs appear to be placing the bulk of that duty on Jackson’s promising legs.
