A Refreshing Story for a Noles Fan
After months of bad press and scandal, a story like this can really make your day. Stuart Mandel on SI.com wrote a great story about Myron Rolle's academic pursuits. While I would love to watch Myron suit up in a Bucs jersey, I am rooting for him to get the Rhodes, go to Oxford and become a leader in global health. I've always thought that he was one of our best recruits, both in terms of talent and character, over the last five years and this story proves it.
On a more serious note, I also think this story demonstrates that the student-athlete is not dead, rather it is a choice that players make. I am not saying that every footballer needs to be a 4.0 pre-med student, but it is possible to have above a 3.0 and graduate with a real degree. As the Patriots have shown, players who graduate and do well in college, turn out to be more successful in the NFL. I do believe that if Rolle does decide to turn pro, he has the potential to play with John Lynch's intellect in Ed Reed's body.

Not to take away from Rolle's academic pursuits...
After all, he is a very intelligent and well-rounded young man, but I think the hype of his football talent has been extremely overblown. I have a number of friends that are FSU alums who think Rolle has been decent and at times above average, but has yet to come close to performing up to the expectations he came out of his school with. Potential is a dangerous word (just look at the NBA draft) and at this point I would think Rolle shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as NFL stars like Lynch and Reed. Rolle could (and needs to) have a breakout year this season to really be the talent he was expected to be.
As for the other side, his intellect. Good for him and great story. It’s few and far between that we hear about student athletes like this and I’m sure one day Rolle can do great things.

And yes...
I went to UF, but I hope everyone on here believes that has nothing to do with my thoughts in this post. I’ve swallowed my pride numerous times over the years cheering for my favorite player (Derrick Brooks) regardless of the college jersey he wore.

I happen
to agree with you Gator… I bought into the hype when Myron arrived on Campus and I’m still waiting for him to even eclipse Tony Carter’s successes on the football field. I’m glad he’s a smart cat and putting his mental attributes to work, but at the end of the day he plays on my favorite football team and his output thus far is miles and miles behind the hype machine that led him to Florida State….
I had to check my pride a long time ago when it came to former Gators in the NFL, i dont know anybody that didnt grow up idolizing Emmitt Smith…. I thought for sure that Grossman and Wuerffel would be excellent pros… Here’s to Tebow living up to the hype (in the NFL, when he’s done playing college ball)
