NFL should rethink Reebok Exclusive Rights Deal

The NFL needs to quit depriving its fans and get rid of the exclusive rights deal with Reebok. The main reason? Reebok is lacking in the Apparel department, specifically in the Hat Department. Checkout what MLB has done with its apparel: Nike, New Era, Twins Franchise etc. Granted MLB players actually wear hats as part of their uniforms, but who didn’t come out of the womb with a ball cap on? Whether it’s the NFL, MLB, or the NBA; fans wear hats a lot.

Why would you limit yourself to one outfitter, especially an outfitter like Reebok who can’t seem to manufacture a decent hat? They’ve yet to realize that you can actually color code the NFL Shield to match the team in which it’s accompanying. Nothing says ugly like the Bucs Red, Black, and White followed by Red, White, and Blue. I think we can all agree that Lids.com is the premier supplier of Hats, professional or casual. They actually have more Tampa Bay Devil Rays hats, than Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hats…. Are you serious? Head over to Lids.com if you feel like becoming depressed by the embarrassing selection of Bucs Hats for purchase. That’s not Lids fault, the blame falls squarely on Reebok and the NFL’s ignorance.

Check out the hats that could have Bucs logos and color schemes:

Now feast your eyes on the options we actually have as Buccaneer fans and consumers:

Unless Reebok miraculously figures out how to mimic New Era, Nike, and the Twins Franchises every move with their products, the entire NFL fan base is stuck like Chuck; as the NFL and its owners signed a 10 YEAR exclusive deal with Reebok in 2002… Ouch!! Who’s looking forward to next season’s hideous Draft Cap? What a disaster…

wow

I one hundred percent agree with you ! my fav hat i have is an all black one and the bucs logo is grey. but it’s long since been retired and hangs in the closet. every year i go through this, looking for a hat that i actually like. and every year there is the red one or the white one etc .. and i havent worn camoflauge since i got out of the Marines! meanwhile as a gator, and notre dame fan i can find hundreds of each. but be honest here “Nothing says ugly like the Bucs Red, Black, and White followed by Red, White, and Blue.” what about the old bright orange “creamsicle” uniform colors we used to have? planes could spot you wearing those hats!

to be honest

I would rock a “creamsicle” throwback hat if Reebok or the Twins Franchise made it… That said I wear a Orange Mets hat often so i’m used to it i guess

if you really only new the truth!

JScott talks like he works for a headwear company himself! Being a headwear designer for real I read you comments about what you think sucs! Some info for ya I worked for Twins and I have one word for ya. REDUNDENT! The franchise sells very well for one reason..it’s baseball. They diddnt sell well in NFL, when they had the license and it doesnt sell well in NBA when they had the license and it doesnt sell well in NHL. Its the cheapest hat made! The profit they make off you is insane! You wanna buy a simple logo on a simple hat then I guess it’s safe to say you yourself maybe a simple consumer. As far as what Lids carries it is not Reeboks choice. Its the buyers and sellers and what they want to show. You think you know about making a NFL shield all different colors..try again. Its the NFL league that makes the calls and they frown on just about any cool stuff they come up with for a design. Its the league that wants the plain jane designs that you blame Reebok for. Its called official headwear for a reason because the league wants official colors with official logos! Also what you complain about being the problem with the designs there are 100 more people that love them! Thats why Reebok is the second largest headwear company in the world. New Era is number one for one reason and one reason only…MLB! So before you wanna bash a design and think you know the answers think again. The amount of designs that you will never see would amaze you! But blame the league for that not Reebok!

Mr. Designer

If anything the Twins Franchises Products are the furthest thing from redundant. I’ve got several different styles of Twins Franchised hats for the Mets, Tar Heels, Seminoles, Rays etc. Sure the fit remains the same "Casual Fitted", but the styles change like no other as I have a Green Mets hat, several multicolored Rays, Mets, and Tar Heels hats. I’m definitely not buying your "Redundent" stance. No way man… If I’m a simple consumer because I don’t like non-fitted camo, nascar styled, and trucker-net fitted caps, then I guess you pegged me right

As far as what Lids carries it is not Reeboks choice. Its the buyers and sellers and what they want to show. You think you know about making a NFL shield all different colors..try again. Bro, your telling me that the NFL see’s camo hats, nascar-esque hats, and fitted trucker hats as "Official Headwear"? The solution is simple: You research what the Twins Franchise is making in profit/sales and present that missing profit revenue to the NFL. Above all the NFL is a business, when they see those business dollars, they will follow suit.

Also what you complain about being the problem with the designs there are 100 more people that love them! Thats why Reebok is the second largest headwear company in the world. New Era is number one for one reason and one reason only…MLB! So before you wanna bash a design and think you know the answers think again. I never blamed Reebok directly, I blamed the NFL just as well. An exclusive rights deal is never good for the consumer (see MVP Baseball). I just merely pointed out how bad Reebok and the NFL are handling their exclusive rights deal. Camo Hats, Nascar Styled Hats, Fitted Trucker Hats, and the best hands down "Draft Day Cap" out there. As a consumer I expect more and it sucks to see fantastic hats on lids.com for MLB and absolutely nothing in the way for the NFL

Twins had the NFL they made a few million a year on it. There designs on hats are the same dam designs on all there leagues. Hence the word REDUNDENT! I know for a fact since I had to design them into other leagues! It sucd. If you think changing a color on a hat 20 times for any team is the latest and greatest then yes I call it simple. There is not any other licensed headwear that has sold, does sell, and will always outsale, any and every league out there, and that is MLB! Twins makes a killing off of MLB with there flagship cap the “Franchise” You pay $20 for a hat that costs them about $1.85. Make it green, blue, red whatever its still the same ol’ cap. The multi colored caps are NOT Franchises they are called a different name. I know cuz we used to make names for the hats we designed. Look all Im saying is a hat is an extension of ones own self. You like what you see and others like what they see. Why not goto a football game and hang out in the parking lot with the thousands of beer guzzling, Nascar watching, hard core NFL fans and ask them what they like to wear? If they prefer the reserved collegiate simple logo looking hat or the loud obnoxious race car look. You might be surprsed! Look not every one likes everything but believe me Reebok isnt hurtin at all in the headwear dept. In fact its growing. Adidas bought Reebok and they have grown and will continue to grow. I respect your opinions since that is the beauty of fashion everyone has there own. But to think you solely know what the mass population likes is absurd. Keep that to the designers in the business and hope that a good hat comes your way to praise rather than spit on.

hey

I should have said this earlier: I appreciate you coming on the site and feeding us with knowledge. Obviously this post hit home for you and I thank you for providing your expertise and experiences on the matter!! Now back to the friendly banter….

There is not any other licensed headwear that has sold, does sell, and will always outsale, any and every league out there, and that is MLB! Twins makes a killing off of MLB with there flagship cap the "Franchise"

I don’t have any statistics but I guarantee you the NCAA and its royalties beat the brakes off Major League Baseball in relation to "Twins Enterprise" Hats being sold. Do you know why MLB "has sold, does sell, and will always out sale, any and every league out there"? It’s because they (along with the NCAA) are the only entities that provide the "Twins Enterprises" Hats.

You pay $20 for a hat that costs them about $1.85. Make it green, blue, red whatever its still the same ol’ cap. The multi colored caps are NOT Franchises they are called a different name. I know cuz we used to make names for the hats we designed.

The name of the hat doesn’t matter, the company who produces them, "Twins Enterprises" is what matters, because they get it. The quality of the hat is a dead issue, there’s way to many variables that play into whether your hat will last and I would venture to say that Reebok and Twins Enterprise are on the same footing in that department.

Look all I’m saying is a hat is an extension of ones own self. You like what you see and others like what they see. Why not go to a football game and hang out in the parking lot with the thousands of beer guzzling, Nascar watching, hard core NFL fans and ask them what they like to wear? If they prefer the reserved collegiate simple logo looking hat or the loud obnoxious race car look. You might be surprsed! Look not every one likes everything but believe me Reebok isnt hurtin at all in the headwear dept. In fact its growing. Adidas bought Reebok and they have grown and will continue to grow. I respect your opinions since that is the beauty of fashion everyone has there own. But to think you solely know what the mass population likes is absurd. Keep that to the designers in the business and hope that a good hat comes your way to praise rather than spit on.

I hang with thousands of fans every Saturday during football season at Doak Campbell Stadium, the majority wear Twins Enterprises hats. The same can be said when I travel to Atlanta to watch the Mets. Given that those two leagues have a fan base that purchase the Twins Enterprises Hat, it only makes sense that the most popular league in the world would sell as well if not better. This is why I think the NFL made a mistake with the Exclusive Rights Deal, it provides less options for the consumer end of story. I’m not trying to bash Reebok (maybe awaken its creative juices), as if you go to Lids.com right now, there are two new Bucs Hats that are fairly decent (Minus the addition of ’76 being on the cap), but this post wasn’t a stab at the folks who make the designs, just the two Mega Businesses that have yet to realize a market that is out there.

Again man, I appreciate you coming on the site and giving us your honest opinions. I still think the NFL would see an increase in Sales had it not opted to do an exclusivity deal with Reebok. If you have any Hat Designs, you ought to put them in a Fan Post and then I can have the community vote on them !!
