Tip to Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen: You messed up in one huge way this season. If you were going to enter the Brett Favre sweepstakes (and we know you did), you HAD to get him. You didn't and it ruined Garcia and, ultimately, your season. Decide early on if Donovan McNabb or Matt Cassel is your flavor of the month. Then go out and make certain you get him.
I usually don't agree with anything ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas has to say about the Bucs, but he hit the nail on the head there.

It was a gamble not worth it
He’s right, of course, but looking in retrospect at the pursuit of Farve: why? At what cost? Were the Bucs really that imminently close to Super Bowl contention? or was the acquisition of Brett going to lead to a one-and-done playoff appearance at a cost of the teams future (trading away draft picks and young players to acquire Farve)?
The QB dating is the constant crux of this team under Gruden. No one is ever good enough and to hell with the tools the QB has to work with – it’s the Quarterback himself that has to pass Jon’s test.
Now the what-if: What if the Bucs do get their flavor-of-the-month in McNabb or Cassell… And waste resources on trying to obtain another arm, as they have the past several seasons? When is someone above Gruden/Bruce “Enabler” Allen going to step in and say “Not again”?

fellas, fellas
Pat’s premise is correct: You don’t delve into the idea of bringing in a Hall of Fame Quarterback, so much so that local reports declared you’ve signed the guy, when you already have a QB (who’s fragile ego-wise) already on the roster. The Bucs did that, lost out, and immediately felt the effects by Garcia not looking into it in Week 1 against the Saints. The result? Gruden benches him…
As for not wanting Favre for draft picks, the Jets gave up a third round pick for Brett Favre and for a shot at the Playoffs. They improved from (4-12) to (9-7) thats a hell of a leap considering where they were the previous season.
Bar none, Favre would have taken this club farther. He takes the necessary chances to make his team a winner. He would have sat in the pocket and delivered passes. Thats something Jeff Garcia refused to do.
Regardless of the talent, the Bucs flirted with making their team better, at the detriment of their own signal caller and paid the price for it… Like Pat said, hopefully they don’t do that again, otherwise they will be left with egg on their face again.

The Jets
Improved D-line and Oline helped them out. Are you saying Favre’s TWENTY TWO INTs would’ve helped this team? Absolutely NOT! Brett sucks.

Pat is right but....
…..it was not Jeff Garcia or Brian Griese that let Carolina, Atlanta, San Diego and Oakland have banner days on offense, and give the first ray of light to the potential of Michael-no-I’m-not-Reggie Bush. Mr Gruden, Mr Allen, and yes, Mr Morris (welcome to the big leagues Raheem) should be thinking of the flavors of the season they need on defense, and go out and get them.

The Bucs aren't going to sign either of these guys.
They won’t spend the money; you’re going to be dissapointed.

Peppers has openly hated Tampa ever since he came into the NFL. Do you really think he would sign?

I'm with you on that...
…don’t want to play the negative role, but I think there’s about a snowball’s chance in you know what that Peppers ever suits up for the Bucs. Would I like him as a player? Of course. But I’m also fine with us continuing to develop Adams and working toward bringing in someone else.

Peppers has openly hated Tampa?
Where do you get that? Or hear that?
As for grooming Adams, sure continue that, but there isnt another defensive end in the league that would provide the impact that Julius Peppers would. I know we have no shot in hell at signing him as:
#1: There’s no way the Bucs are giving up two first round picks after the Panthers Franchise Tag him
#2: He would cost a boat load of money and he plays on the defense
#3: I dont think there’s ever been a free agent in my life that i wanted to join one of my teams as much as Peppers, hence the sidebar countdown, therefore this will not end up in my favor…

it wouldnt shock me in the slightest
The Bucs are known to disappoint when it comes to bringing in big time free agents… I’m used to the disappointment, trust me…
And for anybody that got confused i wasnt saying we should sign both, obviously

Since Brett Favre did SO well for the Jets!
Brett Favre is old and he is SEVERELY over rated! MUCH rather have Jeff than Brett at this point. That guy is an IDIOT! lol

wow buddy
the guy played with a torn bicep and riddled off 22 touchdowns and took a underachieving jets team from 4-12 to 9-7 sniffing the playoffs. A stubborn Lavernues Coles and horrendous coaching ruined his season in NY, which by the way got started two weeks into the Pre-Season. If he returns, the NYJ will make the Playoffs this time around.
Whatever though… this thread was never about Favre being good (or not good), it was about the Bucs showing genuine interest in a free agent, so much in fact that they were rumored to have acquired him, only to lose out and slap their fan base as well as the player they almost replaced.

This is kinda strange..
But unlike last year, we are going to be expected to shop for FA qb’s. last year, it was just a matter of greedy eyes. This year, it is a matter of necessity. and thats why I think this quote is out of place. If we go after McNabb and don’t get him, we won’t have Garcia pouting nor anybody questioning our motives. It was just the right attempt..
The strange part is though, we NEED a QB (with a resigning of McCown) it would put us again at 4 QB’s.. How many teams have ever been in desperation mode with 3 QB’s. Really, how many teams have had 4 QB’s at one time.
Was Gruden like this in Oakland with Gannon?

maybe i shouldnt have included the portion
about ruining Jeff Garcia, because i was honing in the fact that the Bucs chased after a player, almost to the finish line, to just let him slip out of their hands…

I disagree
Does anyone honestly think this is what messed Garcia up? Do you think when Garcia was throwing all of those late game interceptions it was because he wasn’t mentally all there because Brett Favre talked about coming here?
I don’t. I think Garcia is who he is. An OLD veteran who is best as a backup. However, Gruden’s incompetence put him as a starter, and put nobody behind him for relief (Griese? Give me a break).
I don’t want Cassell and certainly not McNabb (who is much of the same as Garcia… old whiner who makes costly mistakes.

Well
Cassell wouldn’t fit into our system very well. I wouldn’t mind going after youth or a rookie. I think McNabb fits the system, but I don’t like him as a quarterback (Hes wildly inconsistent, old, wants the attention) or a human being.

Here's the thing about Cassel...
…how good was he actually? The Pats were 16-0 last year under Brady. Without him, they didn’t make the playoffs. Cassel put up some good numbers, but who wouldn’t in New England’s offense? Sorry, but if Garcia was throwing to Moss and Welker, his stat line would be inflated too. Cassel looks good at times, but I’m very wary that it’s because of the system around him. If he was truly that good of a quarterback, wouldn’t a team with as much talent as the Pats be back in the playoffs? He may be a fine quarterback in the end, but I’d rather we aren’t the team that overpays him this offseason.

His stat line would be better than Cassel’s. At least Jeff Garcia knows that you can throw the ball up into the air in the vacinity of Randy Moss and your chances are damn good that he’ll come down with it. Wes Welker had over 100 receptions and over 1100 yards recieving this year. He also had 741 yards of YAC. I happend to watch a few Patriots games this year; all he ever did was throw screen passes to Welker. Cassel is an at best average QB, and I can’t wait to see a team toss millions of dollars his way to become the next Bryan Anderson.
