Tampa Bay Buccaneer Free Agents for the 2009 Off-Season

The following are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Free Agents this off-season:

QB - Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, and Bruce Eugene (RFA)

FB - B.J. Askew and Byron Storer (RFA)

WR - Antonio Bryant, Joey Galloway, and Michael Clayton

PK – Rob Bironas

OT – Anthony Davis

DL - Kevin Carter and Ryan Sims

LB – Sam Olajubutu

CB - Philip Buchanon

S - Jermaine Phillips and Will Allen

Antonio Bryant is a high priority. We will be losing two of our best blockers in Clayton and Askew if they both left. Gotta try to keep one and I say Askew. We would save 2 million if we released Galloway. Buchanon AND Phillips we both need.

haynesworth notice

I just found this info from a tennesse website

“As a result of the honor, Haynesworth is set to become an unrestricted free agent. One of four triggers in the contract Haynesworth signed in July stated if he made it to the Pro Bowl the team would agree not to place the franchise tag on him for the second straight season.”

We, at least, have a shot at this guy. If Mr. Allen can pull this rabbit out of his sleeves then he should a safe job.

We all know that Bryant is priority #1 and Philips #2. Stevens would be a high priority to and Askew, Buchanan and Clayton would be great to retain. I’m not to keen on keeping Carter, because I think he primarily played the side that opened the closing of our season in Carolina. If we can retain for a good price and as a back up then that would be good.

i love it: Turn the Page on 2008

That’s the only way to get over the free fall, by looking ahead….

Looking at the Free Agents above, WR Antonio Bryant, S Jermaine Phillips, and CB Phillip Buchanon are the guys I would immediately pursue.

FB B.J. Askew and S Will Allen are the other guys I would pursue. I’d let everyone else gauge themselves in the Free Agency Market and determine whether they would like to return to Tampa.

To me WR Michael Clayton has played his last game in a Buccaneers jersey (sorry Joel, better put his jersey on EBay quick!). Clayton either dropped the ball, made nice gutsy catches, or made a key block. He was more like a Tight End than a Wide Receiver. There’s no doubt in my mind that he could be special in a new place, but I think the drops will continue to catch up to him and as a Wide Receiver that is crucial and a deal breaker.

As far as B.J. Askew, he is a very good blocker and when he gets the ball (rarely) he almost always does something with it. With that said, can he stay healthy? There’s a point where Gruden has to get healthy players into his system, because year after year guys go down. I realize that happens to every team, but its Gruden and Allens job to weed out the weak. I wouldnt mind if Askew were brought back or let go.

Jermaine Phillips is basically in the same boat as Askew in my mind, but even still he fights hard to get back on the field. I’ll trust whatever decision Raheem Morris makes in Jermaine’s case.

Phillip Buchanon has to absolutely be brought back. Ronde Barber’s play dropped off considerably and Aqib Talib, despite being talented, can’t anchor the CB crew all his own. I’d do everything in my power to bring back Phillip. If not so be it, moving on….

Antonio Bryant scares me. The guy is young, was productive as hell, and will be a hot commodity. He’s still a relatively unknown though. Did he play like that because he knew a contract year was upon him? Will he be fat and happy with a nice new contract? How many years do you give him? He definitely needs to be brought back, as the Galloway relationship has been completely severed.

Good luck Bruce Allen

Nice post Seneca!

Michael Clayton!

Could there be a better example of don’t speak before all is said and done. Clayton came out saying he will test free agency because he wasn’t happy with the way he’s been utilized over his career in Tampa and feels he should get the ball more. Then comes the Oakland game and we see the same old Clayton dropping passes left and right. I know he had the TD catch, but I remember at least 3 others that glanced off his hands. I love you Michael and still think you can be a contributor, but the idea of you being more than a #3 at this point is almost laughable. You’re one of the best blocking receivers in the game, but you need to work on your hands. Something happened after your rookie season and you’ve just never been the same.

i dont know that

Steven Jackson is truly a Free Agent. I thought he got a deal from the Rams and thus he played this season, but i could be wrong.

I know 99% of of the NFL’s fan base hates him, but I’d like to see the Bucs bring in Grossman over McCown. Let’s get some fresh blood in here.

I’m almost certain we’ll miss out on Peppers, namely because he will inevitably cost us two first rounders, but I wouldnt mind the bucs bringing in Udezi until Peppers can finally be landed next off-season.

There’s some good Kickers available this off-season, but figured Matt Bryant is fairly stout

Here's my problem with Matt:

It has nothing to do with field goals, but rather kickoffs. Bryant only had 7.3% touchbacks, which is pretty poor compared to the rest of the league (ranks in the ~30’s). Gould is around 11% and Bironas ~26%.

Besides A. Bryant

I think there are several excellent WR’s that we could use off this list. B. Lloyd had several really good years. Bryant Johnson, Gaffney and Devery Henderson could also be useful in that spot.

This is all contingent on bringing back Bryant because we’d be looking to fill the #2 spot.

There is also the chance that the Bengals are going to resign Housh and then trade or release Chad ocho cinco. If this is true then I wouldn’t mind sending a second or third rounder for him.

I hate the idea of bringing in Grossman over resigning McCown. We already have the better of the bad Chicago Qb’s. McCown already knows the system and I think should stay to at least compete.

More than anything else, we need to throw the bank to Haynesworth. I don’t care if we give him all of our extra salary cap.. just saying :)
