Blogger Q&A with SBN's Panthers Blogger

Hello Buc 'em readers! Jaxon here with Cat Scratch Reader to answer any questions you may have leading up to our showdown on MNF. I knew at the beginning of the season this game would be big but I had no idea it would be THIS big. Not only is the division lead up for grabs but also a potential first round bye as the winner will essentially lay claim to the 2nd best record in the conference.

The Panthers will have plenty to prove having lost to the Bucs convincingly in Tampa earlier in the season. I don't care to recap that performance but lets just say the Panthers left plenty of room for improvement in all phases of their game.

Some of the positives I think the Panthers carry into this match-up as compared to the first game are:

  • They have shored up the punt protection that was a major liability in the first half of the season
  • The kick return game has vastly improved over the last couple of games as KR Mark Jones is playing well
  • The offensive line is 100 percent healthy, unlike the first game. Both C Ryan Kalil and RT Jeff Otah have played the last two games
  • The Panther run defense seems to have righted itself back to its earlier stellar performance (Warrick Dunn was the first RB to have a good day against the Panthers)
  • The Panthers started moving DE Julius Peppers around in order to create mismatches. He now has 11 sacks on the season
  • The Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith connection has heated up the past couple of games as Smith at times appears unstoppable. Since the Bucs are one of the few teams that have been able to shut Smith down in the past he will be looking to make a statement
  • The Smash-n-Dash RB combo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart has evolved into a legitimate concern for defensive coordinators on a weekly basis. If you don't wrap them up quickly they can take it to the house.
  • The Panthers have started deploying a pass rush specific front line that focuses on speed in obvious passing situations
  • The Panthers are undefeated at home and are sure to be fired up given the MNF stage

Of course there are plenty of negatives but I'll leave that for you guys to talk about. So feel free to offer your questions or comments and I'll do my best to answer them objectively.

Go Panthers!

Q&A

I think it’s fair to say you guys were overly confident that your team was going to win that first match-up. Do you still feel that way for the rematch?

I wouldn't say we were over confident

winning in Tampa has never been easy though we have done it. The Panthers know they have a dogfight ahead of them on MNF. The offense has to remember the kick in the mouth the Bucs defense gave them. You expect a few new wrinkles from the offense

i was expecting a dog fight the previous match-up

I’m sure both teams will show up on the National Stage, should be a real treat

continued

Let’s get it out of the way; do you want the Panthers to resign DE Julius Peppers? More importantly, do you think the organization will make an honest (market value) stab at resigning Peppers? Are you prepared for the possibility that Julius moves on, potentially to a NFC South competitor?

This is all I have seen on resigning Peppers
Charley Casserly of CBS is reporting that the Panthers are going to apply the franchise tag on DE Julius Peppers, that is if the team can’t work out a long term deal. The one-year franchise tender for Peppers – more than $17 million.

I’m not sure of this source so i haven’t posted on it myself. Considering he has 11 sacks now I can’t imagine the Panthers letting him walk and I’m pretty sure he wants to stay.

damn $17 million

for one season, that is SICK money… The Bucs have plenty to match it however. Peppers would certainly lower the blow losing Kiffin will provide…

As always i have my fingers crossed!!

....

Where do you feel you have improved since that wood shed beating in Tampa early on in the season? Do you feel your team has regressed in any facet of the game since that WOOD SHED beating?

Punt blocking for one

I still contend that blocked punt was a killer

Everyone knows Jake Delhomme, Julius Peppers, Steve Smith, and Jonathan Stewart etc, who don’t we know about? Or who should we be very afraid of?

DeAngelo Williams

He has become more of a complete back. He can run inside and out, can break tackles and can catch the ball out of the backfield.

You will also get your first look at RT Jeff Otah. He’s a big boy who can destroy a DE in the running game. He did give up two sacks to Kampman last week so the speed rush is something he is still working on

We’ve been discussing this topic all week: Are you confident in your teams chances should they make the Playoffs? Do you think you will make the Playoffs?

Buc 'Em Your SBNation Tampa Bay Bucs Blog where Dull Boys are not allowed!!

by JScott on Dec 2, 2008 9:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Pretty confident

We should be able to beat the Broncos at home and then hopefully the Saints on the road. That leaves our game and a road trip against the Giants (ouch). 11 wins should get us in

and finally

Preliminary I know, but which position should your team target in this off-seasons NFL Draft?

My view: DT

We need some young blood up front. Unfortunately I still think we need a WR. Dwayne Jarrett just doesn’t seem like the answer. With no 1st round pick though the best the Panthers could hope is to get one starter next year.

Kris Jenkins

has really looked good with the Jets, did you agree with the decision to let him go? This Draft should provide a nice crop of Receivers once again

Buc 'Em Your SBNation Tampa Bay Bucs Blog where Dull Boys are not allowed!!

by JScott on Dec 3, 2008 7:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Jenkins had to go

because he wanted out. No matter how well he’s playing in NY it would not have translated in Carolina. He was disgruntled but no one really knows why. He apparently felt dissed from the contracting standpoint but again not sure why. He then became a locker room cancer. From a team harmony standpoint we are glad he’s gone but sure…we miss his dominance on the field. I’m sure there are other teams that wish they had pursued him. He’s a beast. I still remember the first time I saw him in person and marveled at the size of his legs, arms and ass. He’s just huge but not really fat outside of his gut
