Wednesday night linkage: Bucs make roster moves
The Bucs made some roster moves today, adding DE Patrick Chukwurah and LB Rod Wilson. Chukwurah isn't much of a pass rushing threat, but will serve as an adequate backup, especially with the rash of injuries along the defensive line. Wilson will only see time on special teams barring significant injuries.
To make room, Jermaine Phillips was placed on IR and Noah Herron was released. We hardly knew ye, Noah.
Also, Derrick Brooks missed practice with sore ribs but is still a strong possibility to play this weekend.

Ya really think my man D Brooks would miss a game? BTW, congrats to Brooks and Clifton Smith on making the Pro Bowl!!!
And boo for whoever didn’t vote Antonio Bryant and Barrett Ruud into the Pro Bowl. I know, I know…they have some pretty stout competition, so I see how that happened. On an unrelated note, I love Jermaine Phillips, but this broken arm thing is becoming a serious liability. Do we resign him or is it time for Sabby to run things?

Phillips had a fabulous year.
Why wouldn’t you want him back? I haven’t heard that his arm injury is career threatening.

Phillips is an otstanding player and had a Pro Bowl type year this year. However, I believe it becomes a problem when one begins to lose count on how many game he has missed over his broken arms. He also will want to command a HUGE bump in his salary.
So you have to ask yourself, is risk worth the reward?

I agree with what you're saying, but...
…Sabby needs to take a monumental leap in his coverage skills before we should give him the reigns. He’s fun to watch, but when healthy, Phillips is the far superior player.

Sabby is as good as John Lynch
but doesn’t hit people as much as Lynch did. Sabby can be a backup for another year or two before he becomes dominant.

Wow!
That’s a big statement. Comparing Sabby to Lynch is a little much. I like Sabby and think he can succeed, but he needs the smarts Lynch had…basically he needs to know when a big hit isn’t necessary. I get just as frustrated watching Major Wright do the same thing for UF sometimes. Both guys love the big hit and there’s nothing wrong with that, but they need to grow when it comes to the rest of the game.

Um, wow.
What have you seen that makes you think Sabby is “as good as John Lynch” or will be someday? That’s extremely high praise you’re dishing out without, in my opinion, a proper basis.

I guess I made an overstatement
I think he has the ability to be a top NFL strong safety, but like I said he still needs to learn and stay the backup for another year or so.

Ok, regular season games started by Phillips in the past 3 years
2006: 16
2007: 15
2008: 11
It’s not like he’s missed a big string of games in recent times until going on IR this year.

i think Seneca
is referencing the three broken arms Jermaine’s had… kind of ridiculous, but even then, like you pointed out with the games he’s missed, it hasnt been a huge detriment to the team…
As for the Sabby comment up above, I’m not ready to give him that high of praise, he’s been nice, but no where near the type of player Phillips can be or Lynch for that matter

What I'm saying is that the injuries are a serious liability. Most DB's utilize their arms frequently. This is Jermaine's 3rd break in 4 years....
He also spent nearly all of 2004 on IR due to the same thing. See,Phillips is a FA next year and he will command BIG money no doubt. My thing is, do you want to risk the possibility of this same thing happening again after you shell out big bucks for him? Food for thought……

I understand what you're saying, but it's a loaded question in my mind...
First of all, the Bucs will have a stack of cash and some key positions to consider filling next year through free agency first. If Jeff Garcia is back, a 3rd arm will grow out of my ass. No chance. The only QB under contract for next year put of the current top 3 is Brian Griese. Arrrrgggghhhh!!!!!! Are we ready to commit this early to Josh Johnson for next year? No. The team MUST get somebody in here more capable than Griese. Griese is a good backup, but not starter material. They need to more than kick the tires on a guy like Matt Cassel. WR is still a concern and the pass rush has still sucked, so an impact guy needs to be sought. Depth at D-Tackle should be addressed.
Where does Phillips fit into this pyramid of need in the Bucs’ minds? I really don’t know, but, in my mind, based on other considerations, signing Phillips isn’t just even as easy as asking how he’s gonna hold up down the line.
For argument’s sake, if we’re talking about this in a vacuum and it’s just determining risk based on a series of prior similar injuries, I think you take the risk, unless team medical officials say he’s got a chronic issue that will be could be a major risk. So far, even though it seems convenient to point to similar injuries and infer he’s got a chronic problem, I haven’t heard anything to that effect. If he has a chronic injury, then no, he probably isn’t worth the risk… depending on the asking price and the Bucs available cash.
Then again, for argument’s sake, if he’s got a serious, chronic medical condition that will limit his ability to stay on the field, what makes you think someone will shell out a crazy figure for him? Salary cap and other needs will limit other teams just like it will the Bucs.
