The Bucs Made Me A "Malcontent"
I think that I was the only person who spent a good 50 minutes of Sunday's Bucs/Panthers game pissed off.
Yep. You read that right.
While everyone else was cheering the woodshed beat-down the Boyz N Da Pewter laid on Carolina, I was sitting in my seat in section 303, elbows on knees, palms on chin, and pissed.
All I saw was negatives.
With 1:03 left in the first half, Jeff Garcia completes a pass to Earnest Graham who runs up the right sideline for a 24-yard gain, but tries to cut back toward the center fo the field and doesn't get out of bounds. Thirty-two seconds run off the clock because the Bucs have only one time out left. I am screaming and carrying on with a run-on sentence about how Graham is an idiot because he went to UF.
I have an entire section of rabid Buc fans braving 104 degree pizza oven heat and screaming their head off, and I'm as agitated as a bee hive in a microwave.
Why?
My wife and my friend Jon were looking at me like I just kicked a puppy. Jon asked why I cannot enjoy the game. The Bucs were WINNING. Against the PANTHERS, of all teams... and here I am pissed off.
It's 17-3 and I'm upset that it's not 24 or 27-3.
Why?
Can I not enjoy this game anymore? And if not, why? And can I make it BACK to the point where I can be a fan and watch the game for enjoyment?
I'm asking... someone help me - help the "malcontent."
Have I watched this team for too long?
I've seen this team blow too many leads, get hosed by too many calls, have one too many catastrophic injuries. In short, I've spend almost every weekend since 1980 waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Sunday... it didn't happen.
But I didn't realize it until about 5:10 on Sunday.
Am I ruined for football?
Jon called me a "malcontent."
Wikipedia says the following about the "malcontent:"
The Malcontent is a character type often used in early modern drama. The character is discontent with the social structure and other characters in the play. He or she is often an outsider, who observes and offers commentary on the action and may even show awareness that they are in a play. Shakespeare's Richard III and Iago in Othello are typical malcontents.
The role is usually both political and dramatic; with the malcontent voicing dissatisfaction with the usually 'Machiavellian' political atmosphere and often using asides to build up a kind of self-consciousness and awareness of the text itself which other characters in the play will lack to the same extent.
Jeez... does that sum it up or what?
Despite the Bucs' successes on Sunday, I was upset that score was not more lopsided; so many points were left on the field. Rather than reveling in smackdown, I'm focusing on all the WRONG that was done.
What's wrong with me?
This team - these Tampa Bay Buccaneers est. 1976 - have ruined me. Spoiled worse than chunky milk in an unplugged refridgerator, I sat in the 303, I watched a 27-3 shellacking and it wasn't good enough.
Because the other shoe never dropped.
I saw Horace Copeland and Trent Dilfer develop a rapport, only to see poor Horace tear up his knee. I saw the Bucs come within five minutes of dismantling the Colts on Monday Night Football only to be done in by the lack of coverage ability of Tim Wansley. I saw Bert Emanuel make a gorgeous rolling catch that's ruled a drop. I saw it all.
Sunday it didn't happen. Because of that, I was shocked and chagrinned.
Jon's a lawyer. Can I sue?
There's no point of contention or arguement with these words, but am I alone? I've been a Buc-fan since 1980 and I know that there are people who followed this franchise since Day One. I can't imagine how THEY might feel.
If you are a Buc Fan, you've seen unspeakable horrors on the field. Is it possible that those horrors can ruin you for future events? Can you end up like the chick who got hosed by that guy in high school and makes every date since then pay for the sins of the past?
I hope Jeff Garcia doesn't hate me.
Am I alone? Is anyone else ruined by this team (I guess I should say "franchise")? I'm not stating facts. I'm asking questions.
I think that I am incapable of enjoying this franchise's success due to the franchise's history of failure. I'm a cynic.
A malcontent.

After a dominating win like the one we had yestersday you write this article? After that thorough ass whooping we gave our rival in this head to head match up of what many believe is the leagues best you come up with this?
Screw malcontent, you are an outright idiot. Do us all a favor and just shred your ticket next time. Or give it to a fan who gives a crap! I understand you have followed the team since 1980 so you must be a little senile. Dementia must have set in for you to be upset with what happened in that game. EVERY game there is ALWAYS going to be something most fans don’t agree with. However, if in the end your team wins then all should be right with the universe. This may be the worst…no wait, most disappointing post I have read.
Things could be worse you know. We could be the Oakland Raiders……

My mistake, I meant to say that on Sunday many people said Carolina and us are the best team in our division (not NFL), but after yesterday one could make an arguement that we are one of the league's best....
Even without a steady QB, star WR and a RB by committee approach.

Yeah, if you can't be happy with that victory
there is something wrong. Seek counseling soon or just be a Lions fan.

HANG IN THERE!
Remember BOOKER REESE and the “OVER THROWING SOMOAN” days? When a win over DETRIOT was a celebration at the `OL SOMBREO at 5 bucks a ticket…any where in the stadium seating? Most of you guys dont. I do. Since 1976. I have more orange jerseys than the SPORTS AUTHORITY can order! Could be worse my friend. I love the BUCCANEERS and I`m thrilled we`re in these games most of the time nowadays! Although we did drop 2 or 3 more interceptions, I`m mighty pleased!

I love you Adam, but damn man. If it were me and the wife near you, we would have snickered initially and then left for fear of your life…
In any sport and ESPECIALLY the NFL, you have to enjoy a win, because as you are well aware, they are freaking hard to come by. Nevermind our team just took out the NFC South division leader. On top of that, we have to play these guys again, this season. There’s times to stomp an opponent, Sunday wasnt it. Even if we had won by .02 of a point, a win is a win. Enjoy it and move on.
I’ll leave it at that…. you need a bye week my man… recharge the batteries and don’t take the game so seriously. I used to throw my hat, curse, etc etc when i was in highschool and in the early years in college, at this point though AFTER A WIN, your mood should never be what it was… wow

Horace Copeland and Trent Dilfer developed a rapport?
The same Horace Copeland that never caught more than 35 passes in a single season? I understand where you’re coming from considering I’ve been a Bucs’ fan for much longer than I like to admit sometimes, but a 27-3 win against the team that had the division lead at the time is something to be happy about. If you can’t get up for the fact that the Bucs are 4-2 so far this season then you need to take a step back. And if you get that angry, please don’t be around your computer during a game. You’re a good writer and we’d hate to lose you because you put your monitor through a window.
I was pretty upset Graham didn’t step out of bounds too, but then I remembered what the score was and thought to myself “okay we’re still in good shape.” And the UF comment? Well any of us can make any comments we want, but now I definitely know I’m alone on this site. I didn’t know everyone was so anti-Gator around here. Oh well, I’m comfortable with the fact that I can like UF and the Bucs.
Adam…you say you’ve been a fan since 1980. Well then 4-2 after a 27-3 win is something to be very happy about. I remember being happy when the Bucs beat the Bills about 20 years ago 10-5 in the midst of another 5-11 season. I was a kid at the time, but a win is a win. Let’s be happy the Bucs are at least in a position now to compete for a playoff spot frequently. There are much worse things than a bad play here or there in a 24-point win.
The great thing about sports is the unpredictability, but if you can’t get up for the big wins, then you need to be careful. I wouldn’t want to read one of these after a playoff win.
If you’re really feeling down regarding the Bucs just look back to that one magical season and smile. 2002. I will be happy with the fact that I had the chance to witness a season when the Bucs won it all. Fans of some sports teams can’t say that. We can and it makes me happy.

Oh and sorry about the 35 catches thing...
I have some crazy (borderline insane) obsession with stats. JScott can let you know after our Dexter Jackson debate…HA!

i know i slam former Gators
but its more tongue-in-cheek and more so because I KNOW there are Gator fans that frequent this site and i would be doing them a dis-service as a Seminoles fan if i didnt rub every opportunity in their face from an NFL stand point, because at an NCAA standpoint, yeah….

No hard feelings...
…I give it back to you too. It’s all in good fun.

I just think some people don't see the fun in it.
I’ve known FSU fans that won’t even give a UF fan the time and day and UF fans that wouldn’t be caught dead even talking to a FSU fan. Life’s too short for me to hate someone because of what school he went too. I just think you gotta have fun with it.
I’ll never be a Seminole fan, but I can’t fault Brooks, Dunn, Hayes, or whoever else for making the decision that was best for them, so I get a little chuckle when someone says so-and-so is an idiot because he went to x school.
