A Few Questions With...TheSportsGuru, Broncos Blogger

Hello Bucs fans, Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to Broncos/Buccaneers week.  As part of the cross-blogging that will be going on all week between MHR and BucEm, we figured we would create these FanPosts on each others sites to answer any questions that were out there about each team.

Got a Broncos question?  Fire away!  I am looking forward to a great game Sunday.  The return of Brian Griese to Denver should be a blast, and this visit by the Buccaneers will mean that every team in the NFL has now played at Invesco Field!  So good luck, and ask me any questions about the Broncos, the game, etc!

I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered!

The views expressed here-in are the views of the FAN and do not represent the views of Buc 'Em in any way, shape, or form... Unless of course, Buc 'Em does agree with the views and then, yeah, um, yeah...

The Broncos lost to the CHIEFS!!! Sorry to bring up a sore subject, but how did that happen? Did you think that was possible?

We didn't expect it...

…but definitely thought it was possible.

Shanahan is now 3-11 (I think) at Arrowhead and they are one of our main division rivalries; therefore, even if one team is good and one is bad it’s always a tough game.

How did it happen? 4 turnovers and 200+ rushing yards for the Chiefs.

GO BRONCOS!!!

those

turnovers will do it to you won’t they? We’ve been fortunate the last three games… Sunday could be a different story. Thanks for the insights

Along with the turnovers

we gave KC a short field to work with several times so they didn’t have to pick up a lot of yards to be in FG range.

Right.

We shanked a punt in the first half that gave them the bal at t he 48 and unless I am mistaken set up one of their field goals, and our kickoff coverage totally disentigrated in the second half. We kept letting them have the ball at the 40 or 45 yard line where you only need to go 25 yards to get in scoring range, and even a bad NFL offense can go 25 yards at least some of the time.

3-1.

Who should Bucs fans expect a big game from on the defensive side of the ball? What aspect of the defense do you think has the biggest advantage against the Bucs (speed, talent, size, strength, scheme)? How about on the offensive side of the ball?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:10 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

I’d watch for a big game from DJ Williams our WILL LB and Boss Bailey or SAM Backer (good in coverage too).

Our biggest defensive advantage, I’d say, is the DBs v Griese. If Denver can manage to get a little pressure on Griese (big ’if’) then the DBs should fair pretty well.

On offense I think TB’s Secondary will have a very difficult task shutting down BMarsh and if they are able to then there is still Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, or any of three pass threat TEs (Scheffler is probably the most dangerous in the passing game).

Not only is Marshall difficult to shut down,

his YAC ability are something to be aware off. He can turn a short pass into a long gain by escaping tackles.

definitely watch out for

Tony Scheffler in this game, he is the ultimate “seam” threat, and should get a few looks against Tampa-2. Very dangerous.

As to defense, it is a crapshoot. Should you be worried about Dewayne Robertson, our most significant interior threat on the line, or will he be too hobbled to play? Will DJ be too busy dropping into zone to scare Griese with his inhuman speed and strength on the blitz? Will Champ be playing tight and causing trouble or will he be essentially playing the deep zone usually occupied by a safety while Griese complete’s 75% of his passes underneath? (every QB that has played us is over 70% completion this year… ugh)

How bout this? Watch out for Spencer Larsen, our backup MLB/FB, who may see a snap or two of regular duty but who should be feared on special teams. Two decapitations in two weeks on kick returners is something we expect to see a lot more of…

This would be the only time i would be happy that Dexter Jackson did not look at this site… all we need is him reverting back to his cowering ways… somebody put a hat on Larsen please…

That tight end you speak of scares me as well, Jeremy Shockey had a very nice day against our defense in week 1

that 70% passing percentage gets me a bit excited i must admit…

thanks for the insights

I’d say the fan base was split right down the middle in terms of the appreciation for Michael Pittman’s abilities while he was in Tampa. How has he performed for your team and has the fan base taken a liking to him? Seems like he’s become the red zone back, with Selmon Young carrying the load most of the time. Can we expect this trend to continue?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:11 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

We are very excited with Pittman’s performance so far this year. He started as a primarily goal line and short yardage back but his role is consistently expanding. He has 4 TDs this year and that number should continue to increase. That trend should continue at least until we get rookie RB Ryan Torain back from an elbow injury. Shanahan is very excited about Torain and has said he hasn’t been around a RB that talented since Terrell Davis.

GO BRONCOS!!!

what kind of style

has Pittman shown up there? Bruiser? Tackle Breaker? thanks

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 8:39 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I agree with what you said elsewhere

about being “phantom-tackled”. He certainly gets overbalanced, like a guy trying to run too fast does…

But he is being asked to play like a “veteran” more than any other quality. Pittman knows what players need to do to earn a championship, and it shows in his play: the little bit of extra push, the block held a split second longer, the extra lunge near the goalline, securing the ball, etc.

On goalline plays he has been asked to: leap over the line, follow the FB through garbage, and speed untouched to the corner on a pitch. He asked to do it all, and he has delivered. This has earned him the third and “desperate” reps as well as reps in the 2 minute offense.

I love the addition of Pittman to this young offense, and he has been exemplary of championship football with every touch. Defintiely an x-factor in this offense, and I’m glad that Gruden considered moving on without him. It sounds like everybody won on that deal…

thats good to hear

he was certainly a valued blocker and provided a championship pedigree if you will while he was here

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

We frequently bring him in on passing plays just for his pass blocking ability which is part of the reason Cutler’s only been sacked once this season (stats say twice but really it’s once).

It was a sad time in 2003 for this fan base when the organization closed its doors to S John Lynch. In your opinion, how did he perform while in Denver?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:11 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Lynch was good for us. He continued to hit hard and play strong against the run. He had become a clear liability in passing situation; therfore, the Broncos had reduced his role to obvious run situations. He was not happy with the reduced role and asked to be released from the Broncos. Many Broncos fans are somewhat bitter about him asking to be released. There are some who suspect that he didn’t think the Broncos could win a SB and wanted to be on a team he thought could (i.e. the Patriots or Chargers).

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Oct 2, 2008 7:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

We got sooooo lucky to pick up John Lynch

more than anything we miss his leadership. No one has stepped up to fill the void he left on the field when it comes to lining guys up and calling out those last second adjustments.

I am one of the few Brocnos fans who felt like he was a liability hitting players over the middle, his bread and butter his whole career. He just couldn’t do it anymore. But I would take him in coverage any day, which many fans were adamant agaisnt. His first step on a play was unreal, always right always authoritative. But without the necessary speed to compensate for the possibility of mistake, he got moved into the box, and he was at maybe 50% production there. It is a shame that he felt that he had better options elsewhere (which didn’t pan out), because it feels like he left the game by tossing the Broncos aside. That has been hard to digest completely, but in a way it makes sense: Lynch plays for Superbowls, nothing less. The Broncos failed to even look like a team for the last two years, and those two years were eseentially wasted for John.

Desperately miss the leadership though…

Jay Cutler…. the next John Elway? Discuss

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:12 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

The two are obviously similiar in styles. Both have a strong arm and a tremendous abount of confidence. Both are deceptively fast and can create time in the pocket and make plays happen outside of the pocket. Honestly, Cutler is probably better than Elway was at this point in his career but he also has a far better supporting cast of players. I guess only time will tell.

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Oct 2, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I agree somewhat

But I do think Elway had a better pocket presssence than Cutler, he knew when a d-lineman was going to plow him and would do that classic spin and get away, I also think Elway was much faster than Cutler, Jay can run but Elway was a legit threat when running the ball, you always saw some QB draws and runs called where they really don’t do that with Cutler, although I agree he is faster than people expect. I agree supporting cast is much better for Cutler right now on offense, I think Cutler is a lot more of a student of the game right now than Elway was and I think he has better judgement (generally) than Elway did, Elway got by on a lot of athletism his early years, the fact was Elway was almost always the best athlete on the field. Cutler again is a very good athlete but I don’t know if I would put him in Elway’s class. Leadership skill wise, I think Elway was always the general on the field (with the exception of the 1st season) I think Jay has had to grow into that role, he seems to be more quit and relaxed, but I think this season he has stepped up in leadership quit a bit.

the front 4 has looked great at times over the past 2 seasons, but has really put up some head scratching performances against mediocre teams (see KC this year, Oak last year, just off the top of my head). What gives with the up and down trend?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:12 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

For whatever reason, some teams are consistently better on one side of the ball than the other. I think TB has, in recent memory, been a defensive football team. The Broncos have been offensive. I think what causes that is a coaching staff that has a greater ability to spot talent on one side of the ball than the other. Not to mention the extra emphasis that a coaching staff brings to one side of the team. For whatever reason, the Broncos don’t seem to be able to identify good NFL talent or make moves that will benefit the defensive side of the ball for any significant period of time. The Broncos have drafted an unbelievable number of linemen, and acquired as FAs, that have not worked out. It’s a revolving door at Defensive line.

I think the last “up” period that you’re refering to was really Larry Coyer’s (the DC in 2006) afinity to rush 6-8 guys on any given play. The previous and current DCs (Bates and Slowik) don’t seem to emphasize the blitz nearly as much.

Nevertheless, Defensive line remains a major weakness on this Broncos team.

GO BRONCOS!!!

i concur

with your reasoning dealing with a teams propensity to be better on one side of the ball than the other… Tampa is and probably always will be a Defensive team.. you nailed it on the head.. good stuff

Who’s been the biggest surprise this year, both good and bad?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

The best positive surprise has been rookie WR Edie Royal. The guy is amazing. He quickly moved to the starting WR position opposite Marshall in training camp and has never given anyway cause to look back.

The most negative would have to be the 2007 defensive line draft picks. The Bronocs selected Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder, and Marcus Thomas in that draft and none of them has become the impact player the Broncos were looking for. Thomas (the lowest pick of the three) is the only one who is consistently starting and Moss and Crowder have been healthy scratches for several games this season. Moss did have a season ending injury early last season which hindered his development and Crowder has had injury issues as well. Either way, this group has not progressed anywhere near way the Broncos were hoping for.

I agree on Royal being a great surprise

but in a way he wasn’t. The real surprise was selecting him in the draft, but most fans realized right away that he was going to be special.

As far as worst surprise, while UM makes a good point with the linemen, I think the surprise is deeper than that: our defense has NO identity. Slowik was expected to be a high pressure disciple of Larry Coyer’s “man-show blitz” scheme, or at the very least a proponent of a a zone blitz scheme. But we have been…nothing. We have played 3-4, 4-3, we bring corner blitzes at the oddest times, our insanely good LB DJ Williams has been unfocused and used in the oddest ways. Our terrific tandem of man coverage corners have played deep and off, in these sickening zones where no pressure at all is generated on the ball. Mermaid makes a great point with the linemen: if we had pas rushers, a lot of people feel that this defense would look better, but it leaves open the question: It would look like a better WHAT? I hope it confuses other teams as much as it does us, but judging by KC’s performance against us, that isn’t the case.

It isn’t just an awful surprise: it is a freaking baffling mystery…

Prediction Time: How do you think Sunday’s match-up unfolds?

Buc 'Em - Where a select few of Bucs Fans spend their time...

by JScott on Oct 2, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

I’m thinking the Broncos will bounce back from last Sunday’s shocker at Arrowhead. The offense should return to its nearly unstopable self and the defense should be its normal can’t stop anyone self. I’m taking the Broncos 31-24.

one team coming off of a win going on the road

the other team coming off a horrible loss, playing at home: motivation should be on our side.

But this game really looks like two similar teams: both are good, but are surrounded with doubts about how good. Both have should wons and shoulda losts in their recent past. Both are looking to put up a strong second quarter of the season in their hunts for a division.

27-13 Broncos, in a game that won’t look like it should…
